Modulator for tone and binary signals
Tones and binary information are transmitted as phase variations on a carrier wave of constant amplitude and frequency. The carrier and tones are applied to a balanced modulator for deriving an output signal including a pair of sidebands relative to the carrier. The carrier is phase modulated by a digital signal so that it is + or - 90 deg out of phase with the predetermined phase of the carrier. The carrier is combined in an algebraic summing device with the phase modulated signal and the balanced modulator output signal. The output of the algebraic summing device is hard limited to derive a constant amplitude and frequency signal having very narrow bandwidth requirements. At a receiver, the tones and binary data are detected with a phase locked loop having a voltage controlled oscillator driving a pair of orthogonal detection channels
Observation of fast stochastic ion heating by drift waves
Anomalously fast ion heating has been observed in the Caltech Encore tokamak [Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 1436 (1987)], with the use of laser-induced fluorescence. This heating was found to be independent of electron temperature, but was well correlated with the presence of large-amplitude drift-Alfvén waves. Evidence is presented that suggests that the heating is stochastic and occurs when the ion displacement due to polarization drift becomes comparable to the perpendicular wavelength, i.e., when k[perpendicular] (mik[perpendicular] phi0/qB^2)~1. Stochastic heating may also be the cause of the anomalously high ion temperatures observed in reversed-field pinches
Memory B cells and CD8âș lymphocytes do not control seasonal influenza A virus replication after homologous re-challenge of rhesus macaques.
This study sought to define the role of memory lymphocytes in the protection from homologous influenza A virus re-challenge in rhesus macaques. Depleting monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were administered to the animals prior to their second experimental inoculation with a human seasonal influenza A virus strain. Treatment with either anti-CD8α or anti-CD20 mAbs prior to re-challenge had minimal effect on influenza A virus replication. Thus, in non-human primates with pre-existing anti-influenza A antibodies, memory B cells and CD8αâș T cells do not contribute to the control of virus replication after re-challenge with a homologous strain of influenza A virus

Testing and evaluation of superconducting cables for the LHC
As one of the activities of the US-LHC Accelerator Project, BNL is testing short samples of superconducting cables that will be used in the main LHC dipoles and quadrupoles. The purpose of these tests is to verify that the reels of superconducting cables as supplied by the vendors meet the required critical current specifications. The short- sample testing facility and the computer-assisted testing techniques for acquiring the data are described. We also describe the data analysis, data storage, and data transmission methods. Strictly One-Dimensional Electron System in Au Chains on Ge(001) Revealed By Photoelectron K-Space Mapping
Atomic nanowires formed by Au on Ge(001) are scrutinized for the band
topology of the conduction electron system by k-resolved photoemission. Two
metallic electron pockets are observed. Their Fermi surface sheets form
straight lines without undulations perpendicular to the chains within
experimental uncertainty. The electrons hence emerge as strictly confined to
one dimension. Moreover, the system is stable against a Peierls distortion down
to 10 K, lending itself for studies of the spectral function. Indications for

Temperature fluctuations and heat transport in the edge regions of a tokamak
Electron temperature fluctuations have been investigated in the edge region of the Caltech research tokamak [S. J. Zweben and R. W. Gould, Nucl. Fusion 25, 171 (1985)], and an upper limit to this fluctuation level was found at Te/Te <~ 15%. This measurement, together with previous measurements of density and electric and magnetic field fluctuations, allows a unique comparison of the heat transport resulting from three basic turbulent mechanisms: (1) heat flux from the particle flux resulting from microscopic density and electric field fluctuations; (2) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic temperature and electric field fluctuations; and (3) thermal conduction resulting from microscopic magnetic field fluctuations. The measurements indicate that, in the edge regions, the electron heat transport caused by the measured turbulence-induced particle flux is comparable to or greater than that caused by the thermal conduction associated with the electron temperature and electric field fluctuations, and is significantly greater than that resulting from the measured magnetic fluctuations. This electron heat loss caused by the plasma turbulence is found to be an important electron energy loss mechanism in the edge regions
