In this article I propose to analyze the social construction of youth among the population of Yaxcab Yucat n Mexico using ethno-history linguistics and anthropology I demonstrate the continuity and differences of what it means to be young in Mayan culture paying attention to the differences and inequalities between men and women shown by Mayan language and certain social practices and beliefs I finally analyze what high school students think about what it means to be Maya to be young and whether or not they conceive themselves as Mayan

Jóvenes indígenas en América Latina: reflexiones para su investigación desde la antropología

En este artículo se reflexiona sobre el reto que tiene la antropología para crear una perspectiva propia dentro del campo de investigación de las juventudes indígenas. Se abordan varios aspectos: la dificultad que existe cuando se trabajan como sinónimos, o equivalentes, la identidad indígena/india de origen colonial, con la que emplea cada pueblo para autodenominarse; la existencia histórica de categorías, en lenguas indígenas, para denominar al sector de población que nosotros llamamos joven para comprender sus transformaciones; cómo abordar la diferencia y la desigualdad de género y generación entre los pueblos indígenas; cómo atender los nuevos contextos de socialización en que el ser joven surge o se actualiza; cómo las condiciones estructurales y las dinámicas internas y externas han forjado o acentuado la diversidad y la desigualdad entre los jóvenes; y cómo el consumo globalizado no es por sí mismo generador de rupturas ni un forjador de identidades juveniles.This article reflects on the challenge that anthropology has to create its own perspective within the field of indigenous youth research, for which several aspects are addressed: how to deal with the difficulty that exists when working as synonyms, or equivalent, identity Indigenous / Indian of colonial origin, with which each native people employs to call itself; how to contemplate the historical existence of categories, in indigenous languages, to name the population sector that we call young to understand their transformations; how to address the difference and inequality of gender and generation among indigenous peoples; how to attend the new socialization contexts in which being young emerges or is updated; how structural conditions and internal and external dynamics have forged or accentuated diversity and inequality among young people; and how globalized consumption is not itself a generator of ruptures or a youth identity maker

El movimiento indígena nacional: ¿Único actor capaz de "destrabar" el conflicto?

Este artículo trata sobre la situación de los derechos indígenas en el conflicto entre el EZLN y el gobierno federal mexicano. Se busca demostrar cómo el contenido jurídico de las reformas constitucionales -empleadas en diversos momentos para impulsar u obstaculizar el diálogo y la negociación con los zapatistas a lo largo del conflicto- ha quedado subordinado a una disputa de orden político y militar. Asimismo, y en el contexto posterior a los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001 en Estados Unidos, se analizan las opciones del movimiento indígena nacional mexicano para conseguir sus derechos y contribuir, al mismo tiempo, al acercamiento entre el EZLN y el gobierno federal.This article discusses the issue of the rights of the indigenous peoples within the ongoing conflict between the Zapatista Army of National Liberation and the Mexican federal government. We intend to prove that the legal substance of the constitutional reforms, put forth during the conflict, has been subsumed by the military and political struggle, although these reforms have been used, for a while, either to further or to hinder the negotiations with the Zapatistas. Moreover, and in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States, there have been some endeavors to discuss options for the Mexican indigenous peoples’ movement to stand for their rights while collaborating to achieve a rapprochement between the Zapatista Army and the Mexican government

La traducción y la hibridación como problemas para una interculturalidad autónoma, colaborativa y descolonizadora

Nowadays, three interaction models loom among the scientific and indigenous knowledge systems: the ethnocentric and colonizing perspective, the intercultural integrating perspective, and the autonomous, collaborative, decolonizing intercultural perspective. Those three models are contained in the notion of interculturality; nevertheless, neither of them analyze the implications that the knowledge translation, and the hybridization as a mean and end of the interculturality. In this paper, through the lens of interculturality, we reflect on the asymmetric interaction between the hegemonic scientific and the subaltern indigenous systems; and we propose the construction of meanings, contents and purposes of interculturality through consensual mechanisms to move beyond the colonizing perspective prevailing in the knowledge dialogs.Se vislumbran tres modelos de interacción entre los sistemas de conocimiento científico e indígena contenidos en la noción de interculturalidad: la perspectiva etnocéntrica y colonizadora, la intercultural integradora, y la intercultural autónoma, colaborativa y descolonizadora. No siempre se discuten las implicaciones de la traducción de conocimientos y la hibridación como medios y finalidades del diálogo intercultural. En este trabajo reflexiono sobre la interacción asimétrica entre el sistema científico hegemónico y los sistemas indígenas subalternos. Se propone la construcción consensuada del sentido, los contenidos y las finalidades de la interculturalidad para avanzar hacia la superación de la perspectiva colonizadora

Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people.
