Scaling Laws for Non-Intercommuting Cosmic String Networks
We study the evolution of non-interacting and entangled cosmic string
networks in the context of the velocity-dependent one-scale model. Such
networks may be formed in several contexts, including brane inflation. We show
that the frozen network solution , although generic, is only a
transient one, and that the asymptotic solution is still as in the
case of ordinary (intercommuting) strings, although in the present context the
universe will usually be string-dominated. Thus the behaviour of two strings
when they cross does not seem to affect their scaling laws, but only their
densities relative to the background.Comment: Phys. Rev. D (in press); v2: final published version (references

Structural studies of mesoporous ZrO-CeO and ZrO-CeO/SiO mixed oxides for catalytical applications
In this work the synthesis of ZrO-CeO and
ZrO-CeO/SiO were developed, based on the process to form
ordered mesoporous materials such as SBA-15 silica. The triblock copolymer
Pluronic P-123 was used as template, aiming to obtain crystalline single phase
walls and larger specific surface area, for future applications in catalysis.
SAXS and XRD results showed a relationship between ordered pores and the
material crystallization. 90% of CeO leaded to single phase homogeneous
ceria-zirconia solid solution of cubic fluorite structure (Fmm). The
SiO addition improved structural and textural properties as well as the
reduction behavior at lower temperatures, investigated by XANES measurements
under H atmosphere
Social Effects in Science: Modelling Agents for a Better Scientific Practice
Science is a fundamental human activity and we trust its results because it
has several error-correcting mechanisms. Its is subject to experimental tests
that are replicated by independent parts. Given the huge amount of information
available, scientists have to rely on the reports of others. This makes it
possible for social effects to influence the scientific community. Here, an
Opinion Dynamics agent model is proposed to describe this situation. The
influence of Nature through experiments is described as an external field that
acts on the experimental agents. We will see that the retirement of old
scientists can be fundamental in the acceptance of a new theory. We will also
investigate the interplay between social influence and observations. This will
allow us to gain insight in the problem of when social effects can have
negligible effects in the conclusions of a scientific community and when we
should worry about them.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Constraining spatial variations of the fine structure constant using clusters of galaxies and Planck data
We propose an improved methodology to constrain spatial variations of the
fine structure constant using clusters of galaxies. We use the {\it Planck}
2013 data to measure the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect at the location of
618 X-ray selected clusters. We then use a Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithm
to obtain the temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background at the location of
each galaxy cluster. When fitting three different phenomenological
parameterizations allowing for monopole and dipole amplitudes in the value of
the fine structure constant we improve the results of earlier analysis
involving clusters and the CMB power spectrum, and we also found that the
best-fit direction of a hypothetical dipole is compatible with the direction of
other known anomalies. Although the constraining power of our current datasets
do not allow us to test the indications of a fine-structure constant dipole
obtained though high-resolution optical/UV spectroscopy, our results do
highlight that clusters of galaxies will be a very powerful tool to probe
fundamental physics at low redshift.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures and 3 tables. Accepted for publication in

Multicolored Temperley-Lieb lattice models. The ground state
Using inversion relation, we calculate the ground state energy for the
lattice integrable models, based on a recently obtained baxterization of non
trivial multicolored generalization of Temperley-Lieb algebras. The simplest
vertex and IRF models are analyzed and found to have a mass gap.Comment: 15 pages 2 figure
BRESEX: On board supervision, basic architecture and preliminary aspects for payload and space shuttle interface
Data relative to the on board supervision subsystem are presented which were considered in a conference between INPE and NASA personnel, with the purpose of initiating a joint effort leading to the implementation of the Brazilian remote sensing experiment - (BRESEX). The BRESEX should consist, basically, of a multispectral camera for Earth observation, to be tested in a future space shuttle flight
Properties of WNh stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud: evidence for homogeneous evolution
We derive the physical properties of three WNh stars in the SMC to constrain
stellar evolution beyond the main sequence at low metallicity and to
investigate the metallicity dependence of the clumping properties of massive
stars. We compute atmosphere models to derive the stellar and wind properties
of the three WNh targets. A FUV/UV/optical/near-infrared analysis gives access
to temperatures, luminosities, mass loss rates, terminal velocities and stellar
abundances. All stars still have a large hydrogen mass fraction in their
atmosphere, and show clear signs of CNO processing in their surface abundances.
One of the targets can be accounted for by normal stellar evolution. It is a
star with initial mass around 40-50 Msun in, or close to, the core He burning
phase. The other two objects must follow a peculiar evolution, governed by fast
rotation. In particular, one object is likely evolving homogeneously due to its
position blue-ward of the main sequence and its high H mass fraction. The
clumping factor of one star is found to be 0.15+/-0.05. This is comparable to
values found for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, indicating that within the
uncertainties, the clumping factor does not seem to depend on metallicity.Comment: 16 pages. A&A accepte
