    Controlled nucleation of topological defects in the stripe domain patterns of Lateral multilayers with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy: competition between magnetostatic, exchange and misfit interactions

    Magnetic lateral multilayers have been fabricated on weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy amorphous Nd-Co films in order to perform a systematic study on the conditions for controlled nucleation of topological defects within their magnetic stripe domain pattern. A lateral thickness modulation of period ww is defined on the nanostructured samples that, in turn, induces a lateral modulation of both magnetic stripe domain periods λ\lambda and average in-plane magnetization component MinplaneM_{inplane}. Depending on lateral multilayer period and in-plane applied field, thin and thick regions switch independently during in-plane magnetization reversal and domain walls are created within the in-plane magnetization configuration coupled to variable angle grain boundaries and disclinations within the magnetic stripe domain patterns. This process is mainly driven by the competition between rotatable anisotropy (that couples the magnetic stripe pattern to in-plane magnetization) and in-plane shape anisotropy induced by the periodic thickness modulation. However, as the structural period ww becomes comparable to magnetic stripe period λ\lambda, the nucleation of topological defects at the interfaces between thin and thick regions is hindered by a size effect and stripe domains in the different thickness regions become strongly coupled.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    On Loop Quantum Gravity Phenomenology and the Issue of Lorentz Invariance

    A simple model is constructed which allows to compute modified dispersion relations with effects from loop quantum gravity. Different quantization choices can be realized and their effects on the order of corrections studied explicitly. A comparison with more involved semiclassical techniques shows that there is agreement even at a quantitative level. Furthermore, by contrasting Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions we show that possible Lorentz symmetry violations may be blurred as an artifact of the approximation scheme. Whether this is the case in a purely Hamiltonian analysis can be resolved by an improvement in the effective semiclassical analysis.Comment: 16 pages, RevTeX

    Background Chronic diseases account for nearly 60% of deaths around the world. The extent of this silent epidemic has not met determined responses in governments, policies or professionals in order to transform old Health Care Systems, configured for acute diseases. There is a large list of research about alternative models for people with chronic conditions, many of them with an advanced practice nurse as a key provider, as case management. But some methodological concerns raise, above all, the design of the intervention (intensity, frequency, components, etc). Methods/Design Objectives: General: To develop the first and second phases (theorization and modeling) for designing a multifaceted case-management intervention in people with chronic conditions (COPD and heart failure) and their caregivers. Specific aims: 1) To identify key events in people living with chronic disease and their relation with the Health Care System, from their point of view. 2) To know the coping mechanisms developed by patients and their caregivers along the story with the disease. 3) To know the information processing and its utilization in their interactions with health care providers. 4) To detect potential unmet needs and the ways deployed by patients and their caregivers to resolve them. 5) To obtain a description from patients and caregivers, about their itineraries along the Health Care System, in terms of continuity, accessibility and comprehensiveness of care. 6) To build up a list of promising case-management interventions in patients with Heart Failure and COPD with this information in order to frame it into theoretical models for its reproducibility and conceptualization. 7) To undergo this list to expert judgment to assess its feasibility and pertinence in the Andalusian Health Care. Design: Qualitative research with two phases: For the first five objectives, a qualitative technique with biographic stories will be developed and, for the remaining objectives, an expert consensus through Delphi technique, on the possible interventions yielded from the first phase. The study will be developed in the provinces of Almería, Málaga and Granada in the Southern Spain, from patients included in the Andalusian Health Care Service database with the diagnosis of COPD or Heart Failure, with the collaboration of case manager nurses and general practitioners for the assessment of their suitability to inclusion criteria. Patients and caregivers will be interviewed in their homes or their Health Centers, with their family or their case manager nurse as mediator. Discussion First of a series of studies intended to design a case-management service for people with heart failure and COPD, in the Andalusian Health Care System, where case management has been implemented since 2002.     An algebraic approach to the minimum-cost multi-impulse orbit transfer problem

    A purely algebraic formulation (i.e., polynomial equations only) of the minimum-cost multi-impulse orbit-transfer problem without time constraints is presented, while keeping all the variables with a precise physical meaning. General algebraic techniques are applied to solve these equations (resultants, Gröbner bases, etc.) in several situations of practical interest of different degrees of generality. For instance, a proof of the optimality of the Hohmann transfer for the minimum-fuel two-impulse circular-to-circular orbit-transfer problem is provided. Finally, a general formula is also provided for the optimal two-impulse in-plane transfer between two rotated elliptical orbits under a mild symmetry assumption on the two points where the impulses are applied (which, it is conjectured, can be removed)

    Asymptotic Properties of Difference Equations for Isotropic Loop Quantum Cosmology

    In loop quantum cosmology, a difference equation for the wave function describes the evolution of a universe model. This is different from the differential equations that arise in Wheeler-DeWitt quantizations, and some aspects of general properties of solutions can appear differently. Properties of particular interest are boundedness and the presence of small-scale oscillations. Continued fraction techniques are used to show in different matter models the presence of special initial conditions leading to bounded solutions, and an explicit expression for these initial values is derived.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figure

    Visualization of droplet condensation in membrane distillation desalination with surface modification: hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, and wicking spacers

    Condensation performance is a key target for improving the energy efficiency of thermal desalination technologies such as air gap membrane distillation (AGMD). This study includes the first visualization of condensation in AGMD, through the use of a high conductivity, transparent sapphire condenser surface. The study examines how flow patterns are affected by several novel modifications, including varied surface hydrophobicity, module tilt angle, and gap spacer design. The experimental results were analyzed with numerical modeling. While the orientation of the mesh spacer, which holds the air gap apart, was found to have no substantial effect on the permeate production rate, the surface's hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity did result in different rates. The hydrophobic surface exhibited fewer droplets bridging the gap, more spherical droplets, and better droplet shedding. For gap sizes less than ~3 mm, the hydrophilic surface frequently had regions of water pinned around the surface itself and the plastic spacer. While the flow patterns observed were more complex than the film condensation typically used to model the process, the simplified numerical modelling yielded good agreement with the data when an adjustment factor was used to account for the gap size
