Commensurate Nb2Zr5O15: Accessible Within the Field Nb2ZrxO2x+5 After All

    Get PDF
Doped niobium zirconium oxides are applied in field-effect transistors and as special-purpose coatings. Whereas their material properties are sufficiently known, their crystal structures remain widely uncharacterized. Herein, we report on the comparably mild sol–gel synthesis of Nb2Zr5O15 and the elucidation of its commensurately modulated structure via neutron diffraction. We describe the structure using the most appropriate superspace as well as the convenient supercell approach. It is part of an α-PbO2-homeotypic field with the formula Nb2ZrxO2x+5, which has previously been reported only for x ≥ 5.1, and is closely related to the structure of Hf3Ta2O11. The results, supported by X-ray diffraction and additional synthesis experiments, are contextualized within the existing literature. Via the sol–gel route, metastable Nb–Zr–O compounds and their heavier congeners are accessible that shed light on possible structures of these commercially utilized materials.DFG, 198634447, SPP 1613: Regenerativ erzeugte Brennstoffe durch lichtgetriebene Wasserspaltung: Aufklärung der Elementarprozesse und Umsetzungsperspektiven auf technologische KonzepteTU Berlin, Open-Access-Mittel - 201

A random wave model for the Aharonov-Bohm effect

    Get PDF
We study an ensemble of random waves subject to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The introduction of a point with a magnetic flux of arbitrary strength into a random wave ensemble gives a family of wavefunctions whose distribution of vortices (complex zeros) are responsible for the topological phase associated with the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Analytical expressions are found for the vortex number and topological charge densities as functions of distance from the flux point. Comparison is made with the distribution of vortices in the isotropic random wave model. The results indicate that as the flux approaches half-integer values, a vortex with the same sign as the fractional part of the flux is attracted to the flux point, merging with it at half-integer flux. Other features of the Aharonov-Bohm vortex distribution are also explored.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

Student Loan Program: Discontent, Confessions, Perspective, and Questions

    Get PDF
Widespread concern and complaints have mounted about the cost to the federal government of the Stafford Loan program, and specifically on increasing costs of defaults and reports of fraud and abuse in the system. Policymakers are scurrying to enact change during this Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. Indeed, change in the Higher Education Act is a long time coming. This article will explicate the nature of our discontent with the current state of affairs, offer institutional perspectives, raise questions and key principles in the hope that amidst a highly-charged political debate, reason and common sense can find a place

Caryophyllaeid Cestodes from Four Species of Carpiodes (Teleostei: Catostomidae)

    Get PDF
The caryophyllaeid cestode fauna of four species of carpsuckers was investigated. Four hundred and thirty hosts from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska were examined (Aug. 1967-Dec. 1968) and 260 (60%) were parasitized. Four species of caryophyllaeids were found, of which Spartoides wardi and Biacetabulum carpiodi were most abundant. B. carpiodi exhibits a definite seasonal periodicity in spring and early summer, but none appears to exist for S. wardi. Single infections of Glaridacris confusa and Monobothrium sp. were also encountered

Role of Nutrition in Alcoholic Liver Disease: Summary of the Symposium at the ESBRA 2017 Congress.

The symposium, "Role of Nutrition in Alcoholic Liver Disease", was held at the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism Congress on 9 October 2017 in Crete, Greece. The goal of the symposium was to highlight recent advances and developments in the field of alcohol and nutrition. The symposium was focused on experimental and clinical aspects in relation to the role of different types of dietary nutrients and malnutrition in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). The following is a summary of key research presented at this session. The speakers discussed the role of dietary fats and carbohydrates in the development and progression of alcohol-induced multi-organ pathology in animal models of ALD, analyzed novel nutrition-related therapeutics (specifically, betaine and zinc) in the treatment of ALD, and addressed clinical relevance of malnutrition and nutrition support in ALD. This summary of the symposium will benefit junior and senior faculty currently investigating alcohol-induced organ pathology as well as undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students and fellows
