Development of simulators in VR technology as an example of frugal innovations
Purpose – The aim of the article is to present the use of virtual reality [VR] technology as a cost-effective method of training and improving employee competences. Thus, the article indicates the use of VR as an example of frugal innovation, which contributes to increasing the competitiveness of
enterprises through cheap and effective methods of educating human resources.
Research method – The research method is based on two main areas – theoretical and empirical. In theoretical considerations, a literature review was conducted, presenting theoretical issues that explain the idea of building competitiveness based on the implementation of innovations, including frugal innovations. The empirical dimension was explained by presenting a case study of VR technology applications in personnel training.
Results – The use of VR solutions should be considered as a frugal innovation, as it contributes to the reduction of training costs and at the same time significantly improves the safety of training participants. Originality /value / implications /recommendations – Frugal innovations, whose roots are to be found in emerging markets, quickly aroused the interest of the scientific world in the context of a new approach to management in organizations operating in developed economies. There is still no comprehensive literature on the use of cost-effective innovations in modern enterprises, especially in the context of human resources training. The article fills this gap.Joanna Markiewicz: [email protected] Niedzielski: [email protected] Markiewicz - Wydział Ekonomii, Finansów i Zarządzania, Uniwersytet SzczecińskiPiotr Niedzielski - Instytut Bezpieczeństwa i Zarządzania, Akademia Pomorska w SłupskuBound K., Thornton I., 2012, Our Frugal Future – Lessons from India's Innovation System, Nesta, London.Burdea G.C., Coiffet P., 2003, Virtual Reality Technology, Hoboken, John Wiley & Sons, New York.Dandonoli P., 2013, Open innovation as a new paradigm for global collaborations in health, „Global Health”, vol. 9(41), pp. 1-5, DOI: 10.1186/1744-8603-9-41.Gust-Bardon N.I., Niedzielski P., 2016, Kształtowanie regionalnych systemów innowacji. Psycho-physical factors of the decision making process
Choice situations in everyday life usually are characterized by some degree of uncertainty or risk, which means, that it is not possible to properly assess not only the set of feasible strategies, but also, and perhaps above all, to determine the possible outcomes to achieve. Classical decision models, emphasizing high rationality, are being frequently criticized due to the fact that a single subject has no capabilities to assess the enormous amount of substantial data provided to him by senses and elaborated though reasoning (Goodwin, Wright, Tyszka 2011). A decision made in such circumstances involve at least a potential loss, and thus it may trigger in a decision maker an aversion to the risk (or the uncertainty). George A. Akerlof and Robert J. Schiller in their book (Akerlof, Schiller 2009) would like to see the above mentioned phenomenon, and consequences of such behaviour, as an effect of animal spirits, mistakenly understood as some mysterious forces manifested mainly in fallacious and premature decisions made each day on the global market. Of course, a detailed analysis might be, in some circumstances, beneficial at the micro-scale, however in many other macroscopic analyses some simplifications and generalizations are indispensable. On the other hand mechanisms responsible for the reduction in information material have a biological character and constitute the natural endowment of human beings, thus excluding them from the analysis that distorts the shape of decision models and, therefore, their adequacy in the context of real decisive problems.
Three-dimensional photography as a new technique to make didactic presentations more attractive
In the 21st century, the form of presenting information plays an incredibly important role in
arousing interest in research problems. Stereoscopy is among the imaging techniques that have evoked
much interest in the recent years. Its numerous applications that can be observed in various fields (such as
medicine, space science, law, marketing, or entertainment industry) suggest that we should also use this
technology for didactic purposes. The aim of the article is to discuss the process of creating threedimensional
photography and the opportunities offered by stereoscopy, which makes it possible to obtain
images with depth effect and impression of solidity. The authors describe different ways to obtain threedimensional
images and the devices applied in the process, as well as techniques of presenting threedimensional
material to a wider audience. The methods of free-viewing (the oldest method of viewing
stereoscopic images), anaglyph (a simple method applied in printing and displaying static images and
movies on screen), lenticular raster (employing a series of narrow vertical cylindrical lenses), and
stereoscopy (in which mirrors, lenses, prisms, or filters are used) are discussed. Also, the application of
computer technology is reviewed and the ways in which stereoscopy can benefit from this medium owing
to the use of LCD shutter glasses. Contemporary technology offers considerable opportunities, at the
same time posing ever-increasing demands, which are mentioned in the paper, too. Teaching is most
effective when information is received through multiple channels, combining verbal and visual messages.
Owing to 3D images, the recipients grasp more information details, remember them longer, and are more
interested in the message content. Creating didactic presentations with the use of three-dimensional
photographs or films is presented as a way of arousing interest, allowing direct participation in the
cognitive process, and facilitating the reception of the transmitted content
The effect of weight loss on serum concentrations of FAS and tumour necrosis factor alpha in obese women
Materiał i metody: Grupę 23 otyłych kobiet bez chorób towarzyszących (średni wiek 36,6 ± 10,9 lat) poddano 3-miesięcznej kuracji
Redukcja
masy ciała nie spowodowała zmian w stężeniu FAS. Endokrynol Pol 2008; 59 (1): 18-22Introduction: Apoptosis can influence both adipose tissue mass and its distribution. The suprafamily of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)
receptors stimulate apoptosis. The aim of the study was to assess serum concentrations of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), TNF
soluble receptors (sTNFRs) and FAS in obese subjects and to examine the changes in these parameters after weight loss.
Material and methods: The study group consisted of 23 obese women without additional disease aged 36.6 ± 10.9 years. These were
examined before and after three-month weight reduction treatment consisting of a diet of 1000 kcal/day and physical exercise. The control
group comprised 17 lean healthy women aged 40.3 ± 5.5 years. Blood samples were taken in the morning after an overnight fast. Serum
concentrations of TNF-α, sTNFRs and FAS were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serum concentrations of
insulin were measured by RIA. Serum concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides were measured by an
enzymatic procedure.
Results: The mean weight loss over the three-month treatment was 11.4 ± 3.1 kg. Following weight loss, serum TNF-α concentrations
decreased significantly (7.3 ± 3.0 vs. 5.4 ± 1.6 pg/ml; p < 0.005) and concentrations of sTNFRs increased significantly (1222.6 ± 211.8 vs.
1325.6 ± 261.6 pg/ml; p < 0.05 and 1881.5 ± 337.2 vs. 2057.4 ± 358.7 pg/ml; p < 0.05 respectively). However, no changes in serum concentrations
of FAS were observed after weight loss.
Conclusion: We observed increased serum concentrations of TNF-α but not of FAS in obese women. The concentrations of TNF decreased
and those of sTNFRs increased after weight loss. However, the weight reduction therapy did not change serum concentrations of FAS.

Role of the cannabinoid system in the regulation of food intake
Układ kannabinoidowy obejmuje receptory CB1 i CB2, agonistów
egzogennych — kannabinole i endogennych — endokannabinoidy,
reguluje pobór pokarmu i magazynowanie tłuszczów,
wpływa na metabolizm lipidów i glukozy.
Rimonabant, blokując centralne i obwodowe receptory CB1 , wpływa
na zmniejszenie masy ciała i obwodu w talii, poprawia profil
metaboliczny — zwiększa stężenie cholesterolu frakcji HDL,
zmniejsza stężenie triglicerydów i odsetek aterogennych drobnych
i krążeniowych czynników ryzyka — we krwi wzrasta stężenie
adiponektyny, zmniejsza leptyny i wskaźnika zapalnego białka
C-reaktywnego (CRP, C-reactive protein). Ogólnie następuje
poprawa jakości życia. Po roku leczenie przyniosło pożądane
efekty, a dobra tolerancja utrzymuje się w okresie drugiego roku
leczenia.
Stwierdzone w czasie leczenia rimonabantem ograniczenie czynników
The cannabinoid system comprises cannabinoid receptors (CB1
and CB2), exogenous agonists, endogenous ligands — endocannabinoids,
enzymes involved in their biosynthesis and degradation
and cannabinoid antagonists. Cannabinoid system regulates
food intake and lipid storage, influences glucose and
lipids metabolism.
Rimonabant blocking central and peripheral CB1 receptors reduces
body weight mass and waist circumference, improves
lipid profiles — increases HDL cholesterol concentration, lowers
LDL cholesterol and amount of low, especially atherogenic, LDL
particles, improves insulin sensitivity and decreases the number
of people who meet criteria for metabolic syndrome. Improvements
in metabolite profile are not only weight-dependent.
Increase in adiponectin concentration, decrease in leptin and
CRP (proinflammatory marker) were also observed during treatment
with Rimonabant. The efficiency and good safety observed
after one-year therapy was maintained throughout the
two year’s treatment.
Decrease in the number of risk factors of atherosclerosis during
the treatment with Rimonabant raises hope to use this drug not
only in the obesity treatment, but also in the prevention of cardiovascular
disease

Software controlled low cost thermoelectric energy harvester for ultra-low power wireless sensor nodes
General hardware architecture of an energy-harvested wireless sensor network node (EH-WSN) can be divided into power, sensing, computing and communication subsystems. Interrelation between these subsystems in combination with constrained energy supply makes design and implementation of EH-WSN a complex and challenging task. Separation of these subsystems into distinct hardware modules simplifies the design process and makes the architecture and software more generic, leading to more flexible solutions. From the other hand, tightly coupling these subsystems gives more room for optimizations at the price of increased complexity of the hardware and software. Additional engineering effort could be justified by a smaller, cheaper hardware, and more energy-efficient a wireless sensor node. The aim of this paper is to push further technical and economical boundaries related to EH-WSN by proposing a novel architecture which – by tightly coupling software and hardware of power, computing, and communication subsystems – allows the wireless sensor node to be powered by a thermoelectric generator working with about 1.5°C temperature difference while keeping the cost of all electronic components used to build such a node below 9 EUR (in volume)
The effect of weight reduction on plasma concentrations of ghrelin and insulin-like growth factor 1 in obese women
Stężenie greliny i IGF-1 w osoczu oznaczono metodą immunoenzymatyczną (ELISA). Stężenie w surowicy insulin oznaczono
metodą radioimmunologiczną (RIA). Skład ciała oceniono metodą bioimpedancji z użyciem aparatu Bodystat.
Wyniki: Średnia redukcja masy ciała wynosiła 9,3 ± 4,1 kg (9,7 ± 4,3%). Stężenie greliny i IGF-1 w osoczu istotnie wzrosło (odpowiednio
63,5 ± 13,0 vs. 72,8 ± 15,1 pg/ml; p < 0,01; 126,9 ± 67,0 vs. 170,5 ± 83,3 ng/ml; p < 0,01), natomiast stężenie insulin obniżyło się istotnie
(17,5 ± 8,5 vs. 14,8 ± 10,4 mIU/ml p < 0,05).
zmianami stężeń insulin a IGF-1.
Wnioski: Redukcja masy ciała powoduje wzrost stężenia w osoczu greliny i IGF-1.
zmianami stężeń greliny i IGF-1 u otyłych kobiet.Introduction: The aim of the present study was to examine how weight loss treatment modulates plasma concentrations of ghrelin and
insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in obese women and to determine whether there is any association with possible changes in plasma
concentrations of these hormones after weight loss.
Material and methods: The study group consisted of 22 obese women without additional disease (age 40.6 ± 12.9 years; BMI 37.2 ± 4.6 kg/m2).
All subjects participated in a 3-month weight reduction program. The measurements were performed at baseline and after weight loss.
Plasma concentration of ghrelin and IGF-1 were measured by enzyme – linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Serum concentrations of
insulin were measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Body composition was determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis using a Bodystat
analyser.
Results: The mean weight loss was 9.3 ± 4.1 kg (9.7 ± 4.3%). Following weight loss, plasma ghrelin and IGF-1 concentrations increased
significantly (63.5 ± 13.0 vs. 72.8 ± 15.1 pg/ml; p < 0.01; 126.9 ± 67.0 vs. 170.5 ± 83.3 ng/ml p < 0.01, respectively) and serum insulin
concentrations decreased significantly (17.5 ± 8.5 vs. 14.8 ± 10.4 mIU/ml p< 0.05). We observed a significant positive correlation between
the increase of ghrelin and decrease of body fat percentage after weight loss (r = 0.44, p = 0.03). There are no correlations between change
of ghrelin and IGF-1concentrations and between changes of insulin and IGF 1 concentrations.
Conclusion: Plasma concentrations of ghrelin and IGF-1 increased after weight loss. However, it seems there is no association between
serum concentrations of ghrelin and IGF-1 in obese women
Is Chronic Inflammation a Possible Cause of Obesity-Related Depression?
Adult obesity has been associated with depression, especially in women. Whether depression leads to obesity or obesity causes depression is unclear. Chronic inflammation is observed in obesity and depression. In 63 obese women without additional diseases depression level was assessed with the Beck's questionnaire. After evaluation of depression level study group was divided into groups according to the mood status (A—without depression, B—mild depression, and C—severe depression), and serum concentration of TNF-α, sTNFs, leptin, and IL-6 were measured by ELISA. No differences in age, body mass, BMI, and body composition were observed in study groups. We did not observe differences of serum concentrations of TNF-α, sTNFRs, leptin, and IL-6 between subgroup A and subgroups B and C. It seems that circulating adipokines did not exert influence on depression levels in obese women
