The first excavation campaign of the Tunisian-Italian INP-Uniss Archaeological Mission in Numluli has just ended and we already want to illustrate preliminarily here the research activity carried out last September in the site of the municipium. The excavation areas opened in the forum in front of the Capitolium and in an early Christian basilica on the western edge of the settlement have given remarkable results of which we are proposing here a first synthetic examination, together with the study of the inscriptions of the Roman town which is the other important line of the research.

Contribution to the study of the non-traumatic osteomyelitis of the long bones

    No full text
The authors present a series of 26 cases of osteomyelitis operated from 1930 to 1935, in the ward of the professorship; the observation of which induces them to prefer the proceedment of Orr, or closed cavity (opening and closing by plugging of the focus by ganze impregnated with vaseline, so obstructing the osseus opening). The authors point out the similarity of this procedure to the «treatment by closed cavity» that has been preconized years ago by the learned Dr. Méndez for other infectious diseases, which gave place to ardent and passionate polemics.Facultad de Ciencias Médica

Garum Sardiniae in Tabula: Rediscovering the Ancient Taste of Roman Cuisine

    No full text
The historiography concerning the Garum, as well as the archaeological evidence of the same, are very wide and cover the entire topic both from the historical and archaeological points of view. Can a team of archaeologists faithfully recreate Garum today, starting only with the historical knowledge available to us, and at the same time being careful to use the methods and materials that the ancient Romans had at their disposal to make this product

Henry Knowles Beecher: citizen, professional and researcher: A pathway towards integrity

Not only traditional challenges must be considered, but also the impact of globalization regarding cultural aspects (such as informed consent and assent in infants) and specially what should be considered morally acceptable in an experiment. This has been primarily focused on the adherence to norms and regulations internationally accepted, but not on the evaluation and categorization of damage as consequence of research. It is impossible to deny the contributions that H. K. Beecher made to medical ethics and to clinical pharmacology, especially when dealing with pain and when scientific knowledge is produced experimenting with human beings. Beecher’s contributions produced changes in the way research involving human beings is conducted. He was certainly a man, a citizen and a professional, who struggled to introduce the concept of scientific research based on integrity, social responsibility of the investigator and, ultimately, a humanized medicine.Fil: Mendez, Carlos Fernando.
