An improved quadrilateral flat element with drilling degrees of freedom for shell structural analysis
This paper reports the development of a simple and
efficient 4-node flat shell element with six degrees of freedom per node for the analysis of arbitrary shell structures. The element is developed by incorporating a strain smoothing technique into a flat shell finite element approach. The membrane part is formulated by
applying the smoothing operation on a quadrilateral membrane element using Allman-type interpolation functions with drilling DOFs. The plate-bending component is established by a combination of the smoothed curvature and the substitute shear strain fields. As a result, the bending and a part of membrane stiffness matrices are
computed on the boundaries of smoothing cells which leads to very accurate solutions, even with distorted meshes, and possible reduction in computational cost. The performance of the proposed element is validated and demonstrated through several numerical benchmark problems. Convergence studies and comparison with other
existing solutions in the literature suggest that the present element is efficient, accurate and free of lockings
A smoothed four-node piezoelectric element for analysis of two-dimensional smart structures
This paper reports a study of linear elastic analysis of two-dimensional piezoelectric structures using a smoothed four-node piezoelectric element. The element is built by incorporating the strain smoothing method of mesh-free conforming nodal integration into the standard four-node quadrilateral piezoelectric finite element. The approximations of mechanical strains and electric potential fields are normalized using a constant smoothing function. This allows the field gradients to be directly computed from shape functions. No mapping or coordinate transformation is necessary so that the element can be used in arbitrary shapes. Through several examples, the simplicity, efficiency and reliability of the element are demonstrated. Numerical results and comparative studies with
other existing solutions in the literature suggest that the present element is robust, computationally inexpensive and easy to implement

Simulation Study of Mid-infrared Supercontinuum Generation at Normal Dispersion Regime in Chalcogenide Suspended-core Fiber Infiltrated with Water
We report simulation results of supercontinuum generation in the suspended-core optical fibers made of chalcogenide (As2S3) infiltrated with water at mid-infrared wavelength range. Applying water-hole instead of the air-hole in fibers allows improving the dispersion characteristics, hence, contributing to supercontinuum generations. As a result, the broadband supercontinuum generation ranging from 1177 nm to 2629 nm was achieved in a 10 cm fiber by utilizing very low input pulse energy of 0.01 nJ and pulse duration of 100 fs at 1920 nm wavelength
After-Fatigue Condition: A Novel Analysis Based on Surface EMG Signals
This study introduces a novel muscle activation analysis based on surface
electromyography (sEMG) signals to assess the muscle's after-fatigue condition.
Previous studies have mainly focused on the before-fatigue and fatigue
conditions. However, a comprehensive analysis of the after-fatigue condition
has been overlooked. The proposed method analyzes muscle fatigue indicators at
various maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) levels to compare the
before-fatigue, fatigue, and after-fatigue conditions using amplitude-based,
spectral-based, and muscle fiber conduction velocity (CV) parameters. In
addition, the contraction time of each MVC level is also analyzed with the same
indicators. The results show that in the after-fatigue condition, the muscle
activation changes significantly in the ways such as higher CV, power spectral
density shifting to the right, and longer contraction time until exhaustion
compared to the before-fatigue and fatigue conditions. The results can provide
a comprehensive and objective evaluation of muscle fatigue and recovery, which
can be helpful in clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation, and sports performance
STUDY ON ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF THE AERIAL PARTS AND SOME COMPOUNDS ISOLATED FROM Archidendron clypearia ((Jack) I. Niels Part 2. ISOLATING, DETERMINING STRUCTURE AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPABILITY OF SOME COMPOUNDS FROM ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACT
The antioxidant activity in vitro of methanol extract of Archidendron clypearia was evaluated by in vitro tests on isolated liver cells of mouses with ED50 value of 2.18 μg/mL compared to that of curcumin of 1.87 µg/mL. Using combined chromatographic methods, four compounds were isolated from chloroform extract of the Archidendron clypearia. Their structures were elucidated to be daucosterol, 1-octacosanol, docosenoic acid, and methyl gallate by 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic methods and in comparison with those reported in the literature. This is the first report of these compounds from the plant. All four compounds showed quite high antioxidant activity, for which methyl gallate was the highest one
Biological Characteristics and Antimicrobial Activity of Endophytic Streptomyces
Ham Yen orange (Citrus nobilis Lour) is the highly valuable commercial fruit of Vietnam. With the blooming of fruit production and farming area, this specialty crop is facing threats from several serious diseases; therefore the search for new effective biocontrollers is required to prevent the existing excessive use of fertilizers and plant protection chemicals. Endophytic actinomycetes are of great scientific interest due to their high potential of application in agriculture and pharmaceutical research. In this work, endophytic actinomycetes were isolated from a native orange species of Northeast mountainous province Tuyen Quang. Among 49 isolates obtained, the isolate TQR12-4 strongly inhibited test pathogens Colletotrichum truncatum, Geotrichum candidum, Fusarium oxysporum, and F. udum. This isolate gave comparatively high biomass yields on different substrates, for example, carboxy methyl cellulose, starch, protein, and chitin, within a wide range of temperature from 15 to 45°C and pH from 4 to 10. Sequence analysis of 16S rDNA gene showed that TQR12-4 shared 99% similarity to Streptomyces prasinopilosus; however, it slightly differed from the latter in spore morphology and hence was named as Streptomyces sp. TQR12-4. A thermostable antifungal substance of nonpeptide nature produced by Streptomyces sp. TQR12-4 had MIC against Fusarium udum of 100 μg/mL and 400 μg/mL respective to extract fractions X4 and X5
Spondylolysis-induced Multilevel Lumbar Spondylolisthesis; Challenges in Lumbar Spine Surgery
Lumbar spondylolysis and multilevel lumbar spondylolysis account for 4.4-5.8% and 0.3% of the general population, and multilevel lumbar spondylolysis resulting in spondylolisthesis is even rarer. Herein, we report two cases of three-level lumbar spondylolisthesis because of spondylolysis: A 49-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for dull lower back pain over the past 8 months, with exacerbating symptoms when standing and walking. Spasticity at lumbar region and radiculopathy at S1 nerve root was found on examination and a 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of numbness and perianal sensory disturbances with difficulty urinating 2 weeks ago, the symptoms gradually increased to the time of examination. Both patients were diagnosed with multilevel lumbar spondylolisthesis because of spondylolysis and were indicated for posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). After surgery, both patients recovered well without any significant complications. The improved treatment results suggest the application of PLIF technique to treat spondylolysis-induced multilevel lumbar spondylolisthesis
