Stationary processes whose filtrations are standard
We study the standard property of the natural filtration associated to a 0--1
valued stationary process. In our main result we show that if the process has
summable memory decay, then the associated filtration is standard. We prove it
by coupling techniques. For a process whose associated filtration is standard,
we construct a product type filtration extending it, based upon the usual

Island size distributions in submonolayer growth: successful prediction by mean field theory with coverage dependent capture numbers
We show that mean-field rate equations for submonolayer growth can
successfully predict island size distributions in the pre-coalescence regime if
the full dependence of capture numbers on both the island size and the coverage
is taken into account. This is demonstrated by extensive Kinetic Monte Carlo
simulations for a growth kinetics with hit and stick aggregation. A detailed
analysis of the capture numbers reveals a nonlinear dependence on the island
size for small islands. This nonlinearity turns out to be crucial for the
successful prediction of the island size distribution and renders an analytical
treatment based on a continuum limit of the mean-field rate equations

Short-Term Memory in Orthogonal Neural Networks
We study the ability of linear recurrent networks obeying discrete time
dynamics to store long temporal sequences that are retrievable from the
instantaneous state of the network. We calculate this temporal memory capacity
for both distributed shift register and random orthogonal connectivity
matrices. We show that the memory capacity of these networks scales with system

Simple Lattice-Models of Ion Conduction: Counter Ion Model vs. Random Energy Model
The role of Coulomb interaction between the mobile particles in ionic
conductors is still under debate. To clarify this aspect we perform Monte Carlo
simulations on two simple lattice models (Counter Ion Model and Random Energy
Model) which contain Coulomb interaction between the positively charged mobile
particles, moving on a static disordered energy landscape. We find that the
nature of static disorder plays an important role if one wishes to explore the
impact of Coulomb interaction on the microscopic dynamics. This Coulomb type
interaction impedes the dynamics in the Random Energy Model, but enhances
dynamics in the Counter Ion Model in the relevant parameter range.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
Structure of glassy lithium sulfate films sputtered in nitrogen (LISON): Insight from Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations
Raman spectra of thin solid electrolyte films obtained by sputtering a
lithium sulfate target in nitrogen plasma are measured and compared to ab
initio electronic structure calculations for clusters composed of 28 atoms.
Agreement between measured and calculated spectra is obtained when oxygen atoms
are replaced by nitrogen atoms and when the nitrogen atoms form bonds with each
other. This suggests that the incorporation of nitrogen during the sputtering
process leads to structures in the film, which prevent crystallization of these

The Tanga Dairy Platform: fostering innovations for more efficient dairy chain coordination in Tanzania
The Tanga Dairy Platform, created in 2008, is an informal forum of different stakeholders involved in the dairy industry of Tanzania’s Northeastern Tanga region. The platform’s objective is to exchange knowledge and develop joint actions to common problems. Six years on, it is a sustainable example of a commodity association addressing the joint problems of the region’s dairy industry. The platform has achieved a common understanding among chain actors on dairy price structure; it has successfully lobbied policy makers to reduce value-added tax on dairy inputs and products, and to remove limitations on urban dairy farming in Tanga city
Influence of external magnetic fields on growth of alloy nanoclusters
Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations are performed to study the influence of
external magnetic fields on the growth of magnetic fcc binary alloy
nanoclusters with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The underlying kinetic
model is designed to describe essential structural and magnetic properties of
CoPt_3-type clusters grown on a weakly interacting substrate through molecular
beam epitaxy. The results suggest that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be
enhanced when the field is applied during growth. For equilibrium bulk systems
a significant shift of the onset temperature for L1_2 ordering is found, in
agreement with predictions from Landau theory. Stronger field induced effects
can be expected for magnetic fcc-alloys undergoing L1_0 ordering.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
