Church-Rosser Systems, Codes with Bounded Synchronization Delay and Local Rees Extensions
What is the common link, if there is any, between Church-Rosser systems,
prefix codes with bounded synchronization delay, and local Rees extensions? The
first obvious answer is that each of these notions relates to topics of
interest for WORDS: Church-Rosser systems are certain rewriting systems over
words, codes are given by sets of words which form a basis of a free submonoid
in the free monoid of all words (over a given alphabet) and local Rees
extensions provide structural insight into regular languages over words. So, it
seems to be a legitimate title for an extended abstract presented at the
conference WORDS 2017. However, this work is more ambitious, it outlines some
less obvious but much more interesting link between these topics. This link is
based on a structure theory of finite monoids with varieties of groups and the
concept of local divisors playing a prominent role. Parts of this work appeared
in a similar form in conference proceedings where proofs and further material

Accuracy of prediction models for long-term type 2 diabetes remission after gastric bypass
AimTo evaluate the accuracy of DiaBetter, DiaRem, Ad-DiaRem and 5y-Ad-DiaRem scores' at predicting T2D remission 10 or more years after surgery.MethodsPatients with obesity and T2D (n = 126) submitted to RYGB with 10 or more years of follow-up. It was a unicentric trial. Pre-operative anthropometric and clinical data was retrieved to calculate DiaRem, DiaBetter, Ad-DiaRem and 5y-Ad-DiaRem scores, while a hospital visit was conducted to assess current diabetes status. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated as estimate of the scores' accuracy to predict long-term T2D remission.ResultsAmong the entire cohort (n = 126), 70 subjects (55.6%) achieved and maintained T2D remission 10 or more years after RYGB. The 5y-Ad-DiaRem score was the one that depicted the highest discriminative power (AUROC = 0.838) to predict long-term T2D remission when compared to DiaBetter (AUROC = 0.735), DiaRem (AUROC = 0.721) and Ad-DiaRem (AUROC = 0.720).ConclusionThe score with highest accuracy to predict long-term T2D remission after RYGB surgery was the 5y-Ad-DiaRem. Yet, the available scores accuracy to predict T2D remission in the long term is still suboptimal, highlighting the unmet need for a better scoring system
Ulnar nerve contribution in the innervation of the triceps brachii muscle ulnar nerve to the triceps brachii
The ulnar nerve is considered the thickest terminal branch of the medial cord in the brachial plexus and most authors does not mention the possibility of this nerve emitting branches to the arm. However, some studies reported that the ulnar nerve could supply the medial head of triceps brachii muscle. The main objective in this study was identifying the presence of ulnar nerve branches in triceps brachii muscle. Sixty upper limbs of adult Brazilian corpses of both sexes were used. The estimated age was between 25 and 80 years old. Every studied piece had the nerves and their branches quantified and measured with a manual mechanic caliper. The branches were photographed and had the data registered in individual files. Were found ulnar nerve branches for all the heads of triceps brachii muscle: 1 branch (9,1%) to lateral head, 2 branches (18,1%) to long head and 8 branches (72,7%) to medial head. Thus, we can conclude that the contribution of ulnar nerve to triceps brachii muscle constitutes an important anatomical variation.Key words: Ulnar nerve; Triceps brachii muscle; Innervation
Are SADI-S and BPD/DS bariatric procedures identical twins or distant relatives?-A case report
Given the common anatomical features and similar short-term weight loss outcomes, Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS) and Single-Anastomosis Duodenoileal bypass with Sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) are considered identical bariatric procedures, apart from technical complexity being lower for SADI-S. In the absence of prospective randomized trials or long-term comparative studies the rationale for choosing between procedures is hampered. Post-bariatric hormonal profiles could contribute to understand the underlying mechanisms and potentially be used as a decision aid when choosing between procedures. The main aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of BPD/DS and SADI-S, in genetically identical individuals exposed to similar environmental factors. Two identical twin (T) female patients, one submitted to BPD/DS (T_BPD/DS) and another to SADIS-S (T_SADI-S) were followed up to one year after surgery. Before surgery and at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery, both patients underwent mixed meal tolerance tests (MMTT) to evaluate postprandial glucose, glucagon and GLP-1 response. In addition, 3 months after surgery, glucose dynamics were assessed using a Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) system for 14 days. The percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) was higher for T_BPD/DS compared to T_SADI-S (34.03 vs 29.03 %). During MMTT, T_BPD/DS presented lower glucose, glucagon, insulin and C-peptide excursions at all timepoints when compared to SADI-S; along with a greater percentage of time within the low glucose range (55.97 vs 39.93 %) and numerically lower glucose variability indexes on FGM (MAG change:0.51 vs 0.63 mmol/lxh- 1). In patients with the same genetic background, BPD/DS was shown to result in greater weight loss than SADI-S. The differences in glucose and enteropancreatic hormone profiles observed after BPD/DS and SADI-S suggest that different mechanisms underlie weight loss
Antinociceptive Activity of Thymoquinone and its Structural Analogues: A Structure-Activity Relationship Study
Purpose: To investigate the structural features that influence the antinociceptive activity of thymoquinone and their structural analogues.Methods: The quinones were prepared by an oxidation procedure using molecular oxygen and catalysis with [CoII(salen)] from the respective phenols. The antinociceptive activity of para-benzoquinones (10 mg/kg, ip) was evaluated using formalin test in mice. Vehicle (5 % Tween 80) or morphine (10 mg/kg) were used as control group and standard drug, respectively. The amount of time spent licking the injected paw was considered as the nociceptive response.Results: Among the compounds tested, five para-benzoquinones showed antinociceptive activity. The 2-isopropyl-para-benzoquinone presented the highest potency in first and second phases and produced a near-maximal inhibition (p < 0.001) in the formalin test, similar to morphine (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Our experimental results show that by appropriate structural modification of parabenzoquinones it may be possible to develop novel analgesic drugs.Keywords: Quinones, Antinociceptive activity, Analgesic, Central nervous system, Structure-activity relationship, Medicinal plant
Optic neuritis in Asian type opticospinal multiple sclerosis (OSMS-ON) in a non-Asian population: A functional-structural paradox
Background: Biomarkers have improved the classification of autoimmune inflammatory disorders, including optic neuritis (ON) as a frequent presentation of multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis spectrum disorders, MOG antibody-related disease (MOGAD), and opticospinal multiple sclerosis (OSMS). The phenotype of OSMS in non-Asian populations is less well known. // Objective: We investigated the clinical features and prognosis of OSMS–ON in a Brazilian cohort. // Methods: This was a single-center cohort study of patients from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) with OSMS. All individuals were MOG- and AQP4-seronegative, clinically diagnosed with ON, and had magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed transverse myelitis (TM). Subjects and healthy controls (HCs) were assessed for visual acuity (logMAR VA), automated perimetry mean deviation (MD), intraocular pressure, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT), followed by automated retinal layer segmentation of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL). Receiver operator characteristic curves were plotted and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated for group comparisons of retinal asymmetry of the pRNFL and mGCIPL. // Results: The 30 patients with OSMS were predominantly female and white. The mean age was 48 years (range 20–70 years). Unilateral ON was the index event in 83.3% of patients. Over the average 18-year follow-up period, there were 89 relapses of ON. In individuals with OSMS, the average VA was 0.07±0.14 in the right eye (RE) and 0.13±0.30 in the left eye (LE). The MD was −5.37±5.88 dB and −5.23±3.34 dB for the RE and LE, respectively. There was a significant cumulative loss of VA (p = 0.0003) and MD (p = 0.0001) with a higher number of recurrent episodes. Atrophy of the pRNFL thickness was significant in OSMS (RE, 78.62 ± 16.01 µm; LE, 79.86 ± 13.79 µm) relative to the HC group (RE, 98.87 ± 10.68 µm; LE, 97.87 ± 10.85 µm, p = 0.0001). Likewise, there was significant mGCIPL atrophy in patients with OSMS (RE, 74.96 ± 14.46 µm; LE, 73.88 ± 13.79 µm) relative to the HC group (RE, 90.50 ± 6.74 µm; LE, 90.41± 6.89 µm; p = 0.0001). Retinal asymmetry, inter-eye percentage, and absolute differences accurately separated patients with unilateral ON from HCs (AUC=0.89 and AUC=0.85, respectively). // Conclusion: A structural-functional paradox was found in OSMS with a high diagnostic value for a novel metric based on retinal asymmetry. The functional visual outcome are excellent despite significant structural damage to the inner retinal layers in patients with a high ON relapse rate and long-term bilateral sequential involvement
A Factorization Law for Entanglement Decay
We present a simple and general factorization law for quantum systems shared
by two parties, which describes the time evolution of entanglement upon passage
of either component through an arbitrary noisy channel. The robustness of
entanglement-based quantum information processing protocols is thus easily and

Characterization of Shewanella oneidensis MtrC: a cell-surface decaheme cytochrome involved in respiratory electron transport to extracellular electron acceptors
MtrC is a decaheme c-type cytochrome associated with the outer cell membrane of Fe(III)-respiring species of the Shewanella genus. It is proposed to play a role in anaerobic respiration by mediating electron transfer to extracellular mineral oxides that can serve as terminal electron acceptors. The present work presents the first spectropotentiometric and voltammetric characterization of MtrC, using protein purified from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. Potentiometric titrations, monitored by UV–vis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, reveal that the hemes within MtrC titrate over a broad potential range spanning between approximately +100 and approximately -500 mV (vs. the standard hydrogen electrode). Across this potential window the UV–vis absorption spectra are characteristic of low-spin c-type hemes and the EPR spectra reveal broad, complex features that suggest the presence of magnetically spin-coupled low-spin c-hemes. Non-catalytic protein film voltammetry of MtrC demonstrates reversible electrochemistry over a potential window similar to that disclosed spectroscopically. The voltammetry also allows definition of kinetic properties of MtrC in direct electron exchange with a solid electrode surface and during reduction of a model Fe(III) substrate. Taken together, the data provide quantitative information on the potential domain in which MtrC can operate
Mapping Patent Classifications: Portfolio and Statistical Analysis, and the Comparison of Strengths and Weaknesses
The Cooperative Patent Classifications (CPC) jointly developed by the
European and US Patent Offices provide a new basis for mapping and portfolio
analysis. This update provides an occasion for rethinking the parameter
choices. The new maps are significantly different from previous ones, although
this may not always be obvious on visual inspection. Since these maps are
statistical constructs based on index terms, their quality--as different from
utility--can only be controlled discursively. We provide nested maps online and
a routine for portfolio overlays and further statistical analysis. We add a new
tool for "difference maps" which is illustrated by comparing the portfolios of
