    Hyperplasia of lymphoid structures in the hypopharynx: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Ectopic tonsillar tissue simulating a benign tumor of the hypopharynx is described in this report.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 79-year-old Japanese woman with globus sensation. Because clinical observation revealed benign features, tumor tissue was laryngoscopically resected. From the pathological features, for example, existence of germinal center, lymphoid tissue, and crypt involving lymphoepithelial symbiosis, we diagnosed that the lesion was a hyperplasia of ectopic tonsillar tissue.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Although ectopic tonsillar tissue of the hypopharynx is relatively rare, it should be kept in mind during differential diagnosis.</p

    On the generation of equational dynamic logics for weighted imperative programs

    Dynamic logic is a powerful framework for reasoning about imperative programs. This paper extends previous work [9] on the systematic generation of dynamic logics from the propositional to the equational case, to capture `full- edged' imperative programs. The generation process is parametric on a structure specifying a notion of `weight' assigned to programs. The paper introduces also a notion of bisimilarity on models of the generated logics, which is shown to entail modal equivalence with respect to the latter.POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030947.     A Global SU(5) F-theory model with Wilson line breaking

    We engineer compact SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in F-theory in which GUT-breaking is achieved by a discrete Wilson line. Because the internal gauge field is flat, these models avoid the high scale threshold corrections associated with hypercharge flux. Along the way, we exemplify the `local-to-global' approach in F-theory model building and demonstrate how the Tate divisor formalism can be used to address several challenges of extending local models to global ones. These include in particular the construction of G-fluxes that extend non-inherited bundles and the engineering of U(1) symmetries. We go beyond chirality computations and determine the precise (charged) massless spectrum, finding exactly three families of quarks and leptons but excessive doublet and/or triplet pairs in the Higgs sector (depending on the example) and vector-like exotics descending from the adjoint of SU(5)_{GUT}. Understanding why vector-like pairs persist in the Higgs sector without an obvious symmetry to protect them may shed light on new solutions to the mu problem in F-theory GUTs.Comment: 95 pages (71 pages + 1 Appendix); v2 references added, minor correction

    Specificity of the E. coli LysR-Type Transcriptional Regulators

    Families of paralogous oligomeric proteins are common in biology. How the specificity of assembly evolves is a fundamental question of biology. The LysR-Type Transcriptional Regulators (LTTR) form perhaps the largest family of transcriptional regulators in bacteria. Because genomes often encode many LTTR family members, it is assumed that many distinct homooligomers are formed simultaneously in the same cell without interfering with each other's activities, suggesting specificity in the interactions. However, this assumption has not been systematically tested.A negative-dominant assay with λcI repressor fusions was used to evaluate the assembly of the LTTRs in E. coli K-12. Thioredoxin (Trx)-LTTR fusions were used to challenge the homooligomeric interactions of λcI-LTTR fusions. Eight cI-LTTR fusions were challenged with twenty-eight Trx fusions. LTTRs could be divided into three classes based on their interactions with other LTTRs.Multimerization of LTTRs in E. coli K-12 is mostly specific. However, under the conditions of the assay, many LTTRs interact with more than one noncognate partner. The physiological significance and physical basis for these interactions are not known

    Size and shape constancy in consumer virtual reality

    With the increase in popularity of consumer virtual reality headsets, for research and other applications, it is important to understand the accuracy of 3D perception in VR. We investigated the perceptual accuracy of near-field virtual distances using a size and shape constancy task, in two commercially available devices. Participants wore either the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift and adjusted the size of a virtual stimulus to match the geometric qualities (size and depth) of a physical stimulus they were able to refer to haptically. The judgments participants made allowed for an indirect measure of their perception of the egocentric, virtual distance to the stimuli. The data show under-constancy and are consistent with research from carefully calibrated psychophysical techniques. There was no difference in the degree of constancy found in the two headsets. We conclude that consumer virtual reality headsets provide a sufficiently high degree of accuracy in distance perception, to allow them to be used confidently in future experimental vision science, and other research applications in psychology

    Genetic variation in GABRβ1 and the risk for developing alcohol dependence

    Associations between the [gamma]-aminobutyric acid type-A receptors (GABAA) and alcohol dependence risk have been reported, although the receptor subunit driving the association is unclear. Recent work in mice has highlighted a possible role for variants in the Gabr [beta]1 subunit (Gabr[beta]1) in alcohol dependence risk, although this gene does not contain any common nonsynonymous variants in humans. However, the GABAA receptor is a heteropentamer so multiple potential variants within the gene complex could generate the alcohol dependence phenotype. The association between GABR[beta]1 variants and alcohol dependence risk was explored in a British and Irish population of alcohol-dependent cases (n=450) and ancestrally-matched controls screened to exclude current or historical alcohol misuse (n=555). Twelve common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and a rare nonsynonymous variant, rs41311286, were directly genotyped; imputation was then performed across the whole gene. No allelic association was observed between alcohol dependence risk and any of the directly genotyped or imputed SNPs. However, post-hoc testing for genotypic association identified five common intronic SNPs that showed modest evidence for association after correction for multiple testing; two, rs76112682 and rs141719901, were in complete linkage disequilibrium [Pcorrected=0.02, odds ratio (95% confidence interval)=5.9 (1.7-2.06)]. These findings provide limited support for an association between GABR[beta]1 and the risk for developing alcohol dependence; further testing in expanded cohorts may be warranted

    Measuring enteric methane emissions from individual ruminant animals in their natural environment

    Ruminant livestock are an important source of meat, milk, fiber, and labor for humans. The process by which ruminants digest plant material through rumen fermentation into useful product results in the loss of energy in the form of methane gas from consumed organic matter. The animal removes the methane building up in its rumen by repeated eructations of gas through its mouth and nostrils. Ruminant livestock are a notable source of atmospheric methane, with an estimated 17% of global enteric methane emissions from livestock. Historically, enteric methane was seen as an inefficiency in production and wasted dietary energy. This is still the case, but now methane is seen more as a pollutant and potent greenhouse gas. The gold standard method for measuring methane production from individual animals is a respiration chamber, which is used for metabolic studies. This approach to quantifying individual animal emissions has been used in research for over 100 years; however, it is not suitable for monitoring large numbers of animals in their natural environment on commercial farms. In recent years, several more mobile monitoring systems discussed here have been developed for direct measurement of enteric methane emissions from individual animals. Several factors (diet composition, rumen microbial community, and their relationship with morphology and physiology of the host animal) drive enteric methane production in ruminant populations. A reliable method for monitoring individual animal emissions in large populations would allow (1) genetic selection for low emitters, (2) benchmarking of farms, and (3) more accurate national inventory accounting

    Massive Abelian Gauge Symmetries and Fluxes in F-theory

    F-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold naturally describes non-Abelian gauge symmetries through the singularity structure of the elliptic fibration. In contrast Abelian symmetries are more difficult to study because of their inherently global nature. We argue that in general F-theory compactifications there are massive Abelian symmetries, such as the uplift of the Abelian part of the U(N) gauge group on D7-branes, that arise from non-Kahler resolutions of the dual M-theory setup. The four-dimensional F-theory vacuum with vanishing expectation values for the gauge fields corresponds to the Calabi-Yau limit. We propose that fluxes that are turned on along these U(1)s are uplifted to non-harmonic four-form fluxes. We derive the effective four-dimensional gauged supergravity resulting from F-theory compactifications in the presence of the Abelian gauge factors including the effects of possible fluxes on the gauging, tadpoles and matter spectrum.Comment: 49 page
