    Children, parents and home energy use: Exploring motivations and limits to energy demand reduction

    While almost 30% of UK households include children, little research has attempted to present children's perspectives on home energy use. This study used focus groups with children and parents at two primary (elementary) schools in London, UK, to explore home energy use and energy feedback. Energy was found to be a little-discussed subject at home. Children derived more motivation to save energy from responsibility conferred by school activities than other (e.g. environmental) concerns, and some connected energy saving with dangers of using electricity (e.g. fire). Material and social constraints (e.g. access to outside space, parents' environmental attitudes) meant that it was sometimes difficult for children to save energy even when motivated. However, parents showed greater inclination to pay attention to energy saving when framed as supporting their child's learning than as a financial or environmental concern. Children were disinclined to reduce energy-consuming activities such as watching television, and while parents complained about children's energy use most saw it as a low priority issue. Policy implications of these findings are considered, and the approach employed is argued to be an effective way of investigating children's perceptions around energy use

    Predissociation of oxygen in the B 3Σ-u state

    The predissociation linewidths and level shifts of vibrational levels of three oxygen isotopic molecules 16O 2, 16O 18O, and 18O 2 arising from the interactions of the B 3Σ u -~ state with the four repulsive states 5Π u, 3Σ u +, 3Π u, and 1Π u, have been calculated. A set of parameters characterizing these interactions has been determined.     Estimation of Recurrence of Colorectal Adenomas with Dependent Censoring Using Weighted Logistic Regression

    In colorectal polyp prevention trials, estimation of the rate of recurrence of adenomas at the end of the trial may be complicated by dependent censoring, that is, time to follow-up colonoscopy and dropout may be dependent on time to recurrence. Assuming that the auxiliary variables capture the dependence between recurrence and censoring times, we propose to fit two working models with the auxiliary variables as covariates to define risk groups and then extend an existing weighted logistic regression method for independent censoring to each risk group to accommodate potential dependent censoring. In a simulation study, we show that the proposed method results in both a gain in efficiency and reduction in bias for estimating the recurrence rate.     Interleukin-1 polymorphisms associated with increased risk of gastric cancer

    Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with a variety of clinical outcomes including gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer disease. The reasons for this variation are not clear, but the gastric physiological response is influenced by the severity and anatomical distribution of gastritis induced by H. pylori. Thus, individuals with gastritis predominantly localized to the antrum retain normal (or even high) acid secretion, whereas individuals with extensive corpus gastritis develop hypochlorhydria and gastric atrophy, which are presumptive precursors of gastric cancer. Here we report that interleukin-1 gene cluster polymorphisms suspected of enhancing production of interleukin-1-beta are associated with an increased risk of both hypochlorhydria induced by H. pylori and gastric cancer. Two of these polymorphism are in near-complete linkage disequilibrium and one is a TATA-box polymorphism that markedly affects DNA-protein interactions in vitro. The association with disease may be explained by the biological properties of interleukin-1-beta, which is an important pro-inflammatory cytokine and a powerful inhibitor of gastric acid secretion.     Next-to-eikonal corrections to soft gluon radiation: a diagrammatic approach

    We consider the problem of soft gluon resummation for gauge theory amplitudes and cross sections, at next-to-eikonal order, using a Feynman diagram approach. At the amplitude level, we prove exponentiation for the set of factorizable contributions, and construct effective Feynman rules which can be used to compute next-to-eikonal emissions directly in the logarithm of the amplitude, finding agreement with earlier results obtained using path-integral methods. For cross sections, we also consider sub-eikonal corrections to the phase space for multiple soft-gluon emissions, which contribute to next-to-eikonal logarithms. To clarify the discussion, we examine a class of log(1 - x) terms in the Drell-Yan cross-section up to two loops. Our results are the first steps towards a systematic generalization of threshold resummations to next-to-leading power in the threshold expansion.Comment: 66 pages, 19 figure

    Analysis of the genomic homologous recombination in Theilovirus based on complete genomes

    At present, Theilovirus is considered to comprise four distinct serotypes, including Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus, Vilyuisk human encephalomyelitis virus, Thera virus, and Saffold virus. So far, there is no systematical study that investigated the genomic recombination of Theilovirus. The present study performed the phylogenetic and recombination analysis of Theilovirus over the complete genomes. Seven potentially significant recombination events were identified. However, according to the strains information and references related to the recombinants and their parental strains, four of the recombination events might happen non-naturally. These results will provide valuable hints for future research on evolution and antigenic variability of Theilovirus

    Liver transplantation for acute-on-chronic liver failure

    Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of liver transplantation for acute-on-chronic liver failure. Patients and methods: From November 1991 to December 2007, 517 patients underwent liver transplantation at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. Among them, 149 had acute-on-chronic liver failure as defined in the recent Asian Pacific Association for the Study of Liver Consensus Meeting. Their clinical data were reviewed and their survival outcomes were compared with those of patients who underwent liver transplantation for fulminant hepatic failure and for cirrhosis only in the same period. Results: The patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure included 50 patients having acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B and 99 cirrhotic patients with acute deterioration. Their median model for end-stage liver disease scores were 35 and 37, respectively. Preoperative infection (35%), hepatorenal syndrome (38%), and respiratory failure (28.8%) were common. One hundred and three patients received living donor liver grafts and 46 patients received deceased donor liver grafts. The hospital mortality rate was 4.7%. The 5-year survival rates were 93.2% for patients with acute exacerbation of chronic hepatitis B and 90.5% for cirrhotic patients with acute deterioration. The results were similar to those of the patients with fulminant hepatic failure (n = 37) and the patients having cirrhosis only (n = 301). Conclusions: Liver transplantation for acute-on-chronic liver failure is life-saving, and the survival rates it attains are similar to those attained by transplantation for other liver conditions.published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201

    Systematic Identification of Placental Epigenetic Signatures for the Noninvasive Prenatal Detection of Edwards Syndrome

    Background: Noninvasive prenatal diagnosis of fetal aneuploidy by maternal plasma analysis is challenging owing to the low fractional and absolute concentrations of fetal DNA in maternal plasma. Previously, we demonstrated for the first time that fetal DNA in maternal plasma could be specifically targeted by epigenetic (DNA methylation) signatures in the placenta. By comparing one such methylated fetal epigenetic marker located on chromosome 21 with another fetal genetic marker located on a reference chromosome in maternal plasma, we could infer the relative dosage of fetal chromosome 21 and noninvasively detect fetal trisomy 21. Here we apply this epigenetic-genetic (EGG) chromosome dosage approach to detect Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) in the fetus noninvasively. Principal Findings: We have systematically identified methylated fetal epigenetic markers on chromosome 18 by methylated DNA immunoprecipitation (MeDIP) and tiling array analysis with confirmation using quantitative DNA methylation assays. Methylated DNA sequences from an intergenic region between the VAPA and APCDD1 genes (the VAPAAPCDD1 DNA) were detected in pre-delivery, but not post-delivery, maternal plasma samples. The concentrations correlated positively with those of an established fetal genetic marker, ZFY, in pre-delivery maternal plasma. The ratios of methylated VAPA-APCDD1(chr18) to ZFY(chrY) were higher in maternal plasma samples of 9 male trisomy 18 fetuses than those of 27 male euploid fetuses (Mann-Whitney test, P = 0.029). We defined the cutoff value for detecting trisomy 18 fetuses as mean+1.96 SD of the EGG ratios of the euploid cases. Eight of 9 trisomy 18 and 1 of 27 euploid cases showed EGG ratios higher than the cutoff value, giving a sensitivity of 88.9% and a specificity of 96.3%. Conclusions: Our data have shown that the methylated VAPA-APCDD1 DNA in maternal plasma is redominantly derived from the fetus. We have demonstrated that this novel fetal epigenetic marker in maternal plasma is useful for the noninvasive detection of fetal trisomy 18. © Tsui et al.published_or_final_versio
