    New results for the t-J model in ladders: Changes in the spin liquid state with applied magnetic field. Implications for the cuprates

    Exact Diagonalization calculations are presented for the t-J model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Results for 2xL ladders (L=8,10,12) and 4x4 square clusters with 1 and 2 holes indicate that the diamagnetic response to a perpendicular magnetic field tends to induce a spin liquid state in the spin background. The zero-field spin liquid state of a two-leg ladder is reinforced by the magnetic field: a considerable increase of rung antiferromagnetic correlations is observed for J/t up to 0.6, for 1 and 2 holes. Pair-breaking is also clearly observed in the ladders and seems to be associated in part with changes promoted by the field in the spin correlations around the zero-field pair. In the 4x4 cluster, the numerical results seem to indicate that the field-induced spin liquid state competes with the zero-field antiferromagnetic short-range-order, the spin liquid state being favored by higher doping and smaller values of J/t. It is interesting to note that the field-effect can also be observed in a 2x2 plaquette with 1 and 2 holes.     Qualitative understanding of the sign of t' asymmetry in the extended t-J Model and relevance for pairing properties

    Numerical calculations illustrate the effect of the sign of the next nearest-neighbor hopping term t' on the 2-hole properties of the t-t'-J model. Working mainly on 2-leg ladders, in the -1.0 < t'/t < 1.0 regime, it is shown that introducing t' in the t-J model is equivalent to effectively renormalizing J, namely t' negative (positive) is equivalent to an effective t-J model with smaller (bigger) J. This effect is present even at the level of a 2x2 plaquette toy model, and was observed also in calculations on small square clusters. Analyzing the transition probabilities of a hole-pair in the plaquette toy model, it is argued that the coherent propagation of such hole-pair is enhanced by a constructive interference between both t and t' for t'>0.     Transport through quantum dots: A combined DMRG and cluster-embedding study

    The numerical analysis of strongly interacting nanostructures requires powerful techniques. Recently developed methods, such as the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) approach or the embedded-cluster approximation (ECA), rely on the numerical solution of clusters of finite size. For the interpretation of numerical results, it is therefore crucial to understand finite-size effects in detail. In this work, we present a careful finite-size analysis for the examples of one quantum dot, as well as three serially connected quantum dots. Depending on odd-even effects, physically quite different results may emerge from clusters that do not differ much in their size. We provide a solution to a recent controversy over results obtained with ECA for three quantum dots. In particular, using the optimum clusters discussed in this paper, the parameter range in which ECA can reliably be applied is increased, as we show for the case of three quantum dots. As a practical procedure, we propose that a comparison of results for static quantities against those of quasi-exact methods, such as the ground-state density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method or exact diagonalization, serves to identify the optimum cluster type. In the examples studied here, we find that to observe signatures of the Kondo effect in finite systems, the best clusters involving dots and leads must have a total z-component of the spin equal to zero.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, revised version to appear in Eur.     Cutaneous delayed reactions to antihypertensive drugs have been described in a limited number of case reports but the mechanisms remain mostly unknown. We report the case of a 60-year-old female patient with a 3-week history of an itchy erythematous maculopapular eruption. Although the patient was polymedicated, irbesartan was the most likely culprit. Patch tests and a lymphocyte transformation test to irbesartan were both positive, which was useful for diagnosis and suggested an immunological reaction. No new lesions appeared after irbesartan was stopped or after the introduction of candesartan. Despite its similar chemical structure, candesartan may be tried in patients allergic to irbesartan

    Introdução: o colangiocarcinoma intra-hepático (CCIhp) é um tumor maligno raro, normalmente diagnosticado num estadio avançado. São objectivos deste estudo avaliar os resultados da terapêutica do CCIhp e os factores prognósticos com significado estatístico na sobrevida de doentes com esta entidade nosológica tratados no nosso Serviço. Material e métodos: Vinte e um doentes submetidos a tratamento por CCIhp nos últimos anos, dos quais onze foram operados com intuitos curativos: quatro hepatectomias esquerdas, duas hepatectomias esquerdas alargadas aos segmentos V e VIII, duas hepatectomias direitas, duas bissegmentectomias e uma trissegmentectomia. Resultados: a mortalidade per-operatória foi de 0% e a pós-operatória (três meses) de 6%. As sobrevidas cumulativas aos 5 anos foram de 14% no total da população, 26% nos doentes submetidos a cirurgia com intuitos curativos e 26% para a sobrevida cumulativa livre de doença. Observou-se recidiva tumoral hepática em cinco doentes, a qual ocorreu aos 1,09 ± 0,82 anos (limites: 0,24-2,08). Os factores que influenciaram a sobrevida da globalidade dos doentes foram o tratamento cirúrgico com intuitos curativos (p=0,028), a presença de invasão vascular (p=0,002) e o valor da fosfatase alcalina no momento do diagnóstico (p=0,044). Entre os doentes operados com intuitos curativos, a presença de invasão vascular influenciou a sobrevida global (p=0,025) e a sobrevida livre de doença (p=0,002). Conclusões: A ressecção cirúrgica com intuitos curativos aumentou, de forma estatisticamente significativa, a sobrevida dos doentes com CCIhp. No entanto, sendo o diagnóstico geralmente tardio, apenas uma pequena percentagem destes doentes pode beneficiar deste tratamento.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Numerical Simulation of Magnetic Interactions in Polycrystalline YFeO3

    The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline yttrium orthoferrite was studied from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Magnetization measurements up to 170 kOe were carried out on a single-phase YFeO3 sample synthesized from heterobimetallic alkoxides. The complex interplay between weak-ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, observed in the experimental M(H) curves, was successfully simulated by locally minimizing the magnetic energy of two interacting Fe sublattices. The resulting values of exchange field (H_E = 5590 kOe), anisotropy field (H_A = 0.5 kOe) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric field (H_D = 149 kOe) are in good agreement with previous reports on this system.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

    In the process of teaching and training, aligning learning goals with the needs of the labor market is a difficult task for universities. It is necessary to promote and develop generic skills that provide competitive advantages for students entering the job market. Although organizations seek professionals with flexible and varied skills, universities often underestimate the importance of cross-curricular skills. In addition, it is intended that the university promote in the students' personal development through their academic, personal, social and professional adjustment. Organizations today tend to approach work globally and organically and it is increasingly important that any activity be framed in a global understanding of work processes and backed by up-to-date and specialized knowledge. These skills are a prerequisite for adapting to change and by promoting lifelong learning. In the transition from the university to the job market, in addition to technical and professional skills, it is essential to have personal and social skills such as communication, organization and time management, teamwork and conflict management, essential in this highly competitive context. Thus, this article aims to identify the perception of recent graduates as to the importance of the transversal competences acquired and developed in the academic environment and what and how they are applied in the organizational environment. Answering the following question: How do students perceive competency training as a driver of competitive advantages for the challenges of the labor market world? Specifically, it aims to analyse the impact of the training in transversal competences that occurred during the 1st cycle of higher studies on the promotion of competences in the work environment. The answers to a questionnaire to identify the perception of recent graduates on this issue allowed us to analyse the development and applicability of these competences in the organizations. This analysis underlines the importance of transversal skills in the integration of young people into the labor market, and also highlights the importance of higher education's contribution to their acquisition and development.     Frictional sliding without geometrical reflection symmetry

    The dynamics of frictional interfaces play an important role in many physical systems spanning a broad range of scales. It is well-known that frictional interfaces separating two dissimilar materials couple interfacial slip and normal stress variations, a coupling that has major implications on their stability, failure mechanism and rupture directionality. In contrast, interfaces separating identical materials are traditionally assumed not to feature such a coupling due to symmetry considerations. We show, combining theory and experiments, that interfaces which separate bodies made of macroscopically identical materials, but lack geometrical reflection symmetry, generically feature such a coupling. We discuss two applications of this novel feature. First, we show that it accounts for a distinct, and previously unexplained, experimentally observed weakening effect in frictional cracks. Second, we demonstrate that it can destabilize frictional sliding which is otherwise stable.
