    The Electron Temperature Gradient in the Galactic Disk

    We derive the electron temperature gradient in the Galactic disk using a sample of HII regions that spans Galactocentric distances 0--17 kpc. The electron temperature was calculated using high precision radio recombination line and continuum observations for more than 100 HII regions. Nebular Galactocentric distances were calculated in a consistent manner using the radial velocities measured by our radio recombination line survey. The large number of nebulae widely distributed over the Galactic disk together with the uniformity of our data provide a secure estimate of the present electron temperature gradient in the Milky Way. Because metals are the main coolants in the photoionized gas, the electron temperature along the Galactic disk should be directly related to the distribution of heavy elements in the Milky Way. Our best estimate of the electron temperature gradient is derived from a sample of 76 sources for which we have the highest quality data. The present gradient in electron temperature has a minimum at the Galactic Center and rises at a rate of 287 +/- 46 K/kpc. There are no significant variations in the value of the gradient as a function of Galactocentric radius or azimuth. The scatter we find in the HII region electron temperatures at a given Galactocentric radius is not due to observational error, but rather to intrinsic fluctuations in these temperatures which are almost certainly due to fluctuations in the nebular heavy element abundances. Comparing the HII region gradient with the much steeper gradient found for planetary nebulae suggests that the electron temperature gradient evolves with time, becoming flatter as a consequence of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way's disk.Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures (accepted for publication in the ApJ

    Modeling electrodialysis and a photochemical process for their integration in saline wastewater treatment.

    Oxidation processes can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing non-biodegradable organic compounds. However, the presence of dissolved salts may inhibit or retard the treatment process. In this study, wastewater desalination by electrodialysis (ED) associated with an advanced oxidation process (photo-Fenton) was applied to an aqueous NaCl solution containing phenol. The influence of process variables on the demineralization factor was investigated for ED in pilot scale and a correlation was obtained between the phenol, salt and water fluxes with the driving force. The oxidation process was investigated in a laboratory batch reactor and a model based on artificial neural networks was developed by fitting the experimental data describing the reaction rate as a function of the input variables. With the experimental parameters of both processes, a dynamic model was developed for ED and a continuous model, using a plug flow reactor approach, for the oxidation process. Finally, the hybrid model simulation could validate different scenarios of the integrated system and can be used for process optimization

    Planetary Nebula Abundances and Morphology: Probing the Chemical Evolution of the Milky Way

    This paper presents a homogeneous study of abundances in a sample of 79 northern galactic planetary nebulae whose morphological classes have been uniformly determined. Ionic abundances and plasma diagnostics were derived from selected optical line strengths in the literature, and elemental abundances were estimated with the Ionization Correction Factor developed by Kingsbourgh & Barlow (1994). We compare the elemental abundances to the final yields obtained from stellar evolution models of low-and intermediate-mass stars, and we confirm that most Bipolar planetary nebulae have high nitrogen and helium abundance, and are the likely progeny of stars with main-sequence mass larger than 3 solar masses. We derive =0.27, and discuss the implication of such a high ratio in connection with the solar neon abundance. We determine the galactic gradients of oxygen and neon, and found Delta log (O/H)/Delta R=-0.01 dex/kpc$ and Delta log (Ne/H)/Delta R=-0.01 dex/kpc.     Base genética das cultivares brasileiras de feijão-caupi.

    Numerosos estudos têm sido realizados para estimar a base genética das principais espécies cultivadas, tais como a soja, o trigo e o arroz. Esses estudos mostraram que a base genética das cultivares modernas é considerada muito estreita. Recomendou-se a sua ampliação para diminuir os riscos de vulnerabilidade genética e evitar os patamares de produtividade. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a base genética das cultivares de feijão-caupi [Viqna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] no Brasil, mediante estudo das genealogias de 41 cultivares recomendadas entre 1969 e 2005. Apenas sete desses ancestrais contribuíram com 51% dos genes do germoplasma em uso. Esses são: TVu1190, Pitiuba, Bengala, Quebra-cadeira, CNC0434, TVu59 e TVu410. Um grupo de 17 ancestrais acumulou aproximadamente 81% dos genes em uso, revelando que a base genética do feijão-caupi brasileiro , apesar de estreita, é mais ampla que a do arroz, na qual, 11 ancestrais contribuíram com 81% dos genes. Entre os mais importantes ancestrais do feijão-caupi no Brasil, nove têm origem na Nigéria, seis no Brasil, um na Costa Rica e um nos Estados Unidos

    Este trabalho caracterizou as práticas utilizadas no manejo dos recursos naturais no ecossistema de várzea do Município de Parintins - AM. Para a coleta de informações do trabalho foram entrevistados oito agricultores de duas comunidades da região do Paraná de Parintins, sendo aplicados questionários semi-estruturados e visitas nas áreas de cultivo. Por meio dos dados e observações foi verificado o uso de várias práticas de agricultura de base sustentável no sistema de produção da agricultura tradicional. Dentre outras práticas, destacam-se: o manejo alternativo de pragas, o plantio consorciado e o manejo da matéria orgânica do solo

    Thermal instability of an expanding dusty plasma with equilibrium cooling

    We present an analysis of radiation induced instabilities in an expanding plasma with considerable presence of dust particles and equilibrium cooling. We have shown that the equilibrium expansion and cooling destabilize the radiation condensation modes and the presence of dust particles enhances this effect. We have examined our results in the context of ionized, dusty-plasma environments such as those found in planetary nebulae (PNe). We show that due to the non-static equilibrium and finite equilibrium cooling, small-scale localized structures formed out of thermal instability, become transient, which agrees with the observational results. The dust-charge fluctuation is found to heavily suppress these instabilities, though in view of non-availability of convincing experimental data, a definitive conclusion could not be made.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure

    Sulfur, Chlorine, & Argon Abundances in Planetary Nebulae. I: Observations and Abundances in a Northern Sample

    This paper is the first of a series specifically studying the abundances of sulfur, chlorine, and argon in Type II planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Galactic disk. Ratios of S/O, Cl/O, and Ar/O constitute important tests of differential nucleosynthesis of these elements and serve as strict constraints on massive star yield predictions. We present new ground-based optical spectra extending from 3600-9600 Angstroms for a sample of 19 Type II northern PNe. This range includes the strong near infrared lines of [S III] 9069,9532, which allows us to test extensively their effectiveness as sulfur abundance indicators. We also introduce a new, model-tested ionization correction factor for sulfur. For the present sample, we find average values of S/O=1.2E-2(+/- 0.71E-2), Cl/O=3.3E-4(+/- 1.6E-4), and Ar/O=5.0E-3(+/- 1.9E-3).Comment: 44 pages, 6 figures.     The physical parameters, excitation and chemistry of the rim, jets and knots of the planetary nebula NGC 7009

    We present long-slit optical spectra along the major axis of the planetary nebula NGC 7009. These data allow us to discuss the physical, excitation and chemical properties of all the morphological components of the nebula, including its remarkable systems of knots and jets. The main results of this analysis are the following: i) the electron temperature throughout the nebula is remarkably constant, T_e[OIII] = 10200K; ii) the bright inner rim and inner pair of knots have similar densities of N_e = 6000cm^{-3}, whereas a much lower density of N_e = 1500cm^{-3} is derived for the outer knots as well as for the jets; iii) all the regions (rim, inner knots, jets and outer knots) are mainly radiatively excited; and iv) there are no clear abundance changes across the nebula for He, O, Ne, or S. There is a marginal evidence for an overabundance of nitrogen in the outer knots (ansae), but the inner ones (caps) and the rim have similar N/H values that are at variance with previous results. Our data are compared to the predictions of theoretical models, from which we conclude that the knots at the head of the jets are not matter accumulated during the jet expansion through the circumstellar medium, neither can their origin be explained by the proposed HD or MHD interacting-wind models for the formation of jets/ansae, since the densities as well as the main excitation mechanisms of the knots, disagree with model predictions.Comment: Figure 1 was changed because features were misidentified in the previous version. 17 pages including 5 figures and 3 tables.
