    A double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study evaluating the impact of dates vinegar consumption on blood biochemical and hematological parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes

    Purpose: To determine the effects of dates vinegar on blood biochemical and hematological parameters in type 2 diabetic subjects.Methods: Current research focused on fifty-five subjects having blood sugar more than126 mg/dL. Participants ingested dates vinegar (20 mL) daily into their normal diets for a period of 10 weeks. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine (Cr), urea, complete blood count (CBC), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), potassium and folate levels were analyzed before, after 5 weeks and after the experiment Results: Dates vinegar improved the blood concentrations of HbA1c (6.80 ±2.34 to 6.17 ± 2.14 (%)), FBS (171.43 ±36.74 to 147.56 ± 38.86 mg/dL,p=0.001), TC (218.10 ± 16.9 to 191.14 ± 14.23 mg/dL, p<0.001), ALT (24.94 ± 5.03 to 21.88±5.08 IU/L, p=0.002) and ALP (264.32± 45.26 to 257.30 ±44.21 IU/L) and folate (34.6 ± 6.6 to 41.7 ± 6.5 nmol/ L, p<0.001).Conclusion: Dates vinegar significantly improved the total cholesterol.The other blood biochemical and hematological factors were also improved however; the improvements were not significant.Keywords: Dates vinegar, diabetes, glycated hemoglobin, hyperlipidemi

    Structure and function of the type III pullulan hydrolase from Thermococcus kodakarensis

    Pullulan-hydrolysing enzymes, more commonly known as debranching enzymes for starch and other polysaccharides, are of great interest and have been widely used in the starch-saccharification industry. Type III pullulan hydrolase from Thermococcus kodakarensis (TK-PUL) possesses both pullulanase and α-amylase activities. Until now, only two enzymes in this class, which are capable of hydrolysing both α-1,4- and α-1,6-glycosidic bonds in pullulan to produce a mixture of maltose, panose and maltotriose, have been described. TK-PUL shows highest activity in the temperature range 95–100°C and has a pH optimum in the range 3.5–4.2. Its unique ability to hydrolyse maltotriose into maltose and glucose has not been reported for other homologous enzymes. The crystal structure of TK-PUL has been determined at a resolution of 2.8 Å and represents the first analysis of a type III pullulan hydrolyse. The structure reveals that the last part of the N-terminal domain and the C-terminal domain are significantly different from homologous structures. In addition, the loop regions at the active-site end of the central catalytic domain are quite different. The enzyme has a well defined calcium-binding site and possesses a rare vicinal disulfide bridge. The thermostability of TK-PUL and its homologues may be attributable to several factors, including the increased content of salt bridges, helical segments, Pro, Arg and Tyr residues and the decreased content of serine

    Psychiatric Morbidity in Psoriasis and Vitiligo in Two Tertiary Hospitals in Bangladesh

    Background: Many of the established skin diseases give rise to psychiatric disorders notably psoriasis and vitiligo. In Bangladesh, no study has yet been reported on psychiatric morbidity among psoriasis and vitiligo patients. Objectives: The objective of the study was to see the psychiatric morbidities in two chronic skin diseases, psoriasis and vitiligo, in Bangladesh. Methods: This was a cross sectional, analytical and comparative study. It was conducted to see whether psychiatric morbidity was higher among patients with psoriasis than that of vitiligo. Specific types of psychiatric disorders were identified by consultant psychiatrist assigned as per criteria of (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental and Behavioural Disorders-Fourth Edition)DSM-IV among 50 patients with psoriasis and same number of patients with vitiligo and were compared. Study places were the Departments of Dermatology and Venereology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in Dhaka city. Results: Among the two dermatological conditions, psychiatric disorders were found 25 (50%) in psoriatic patients and 12 (24%) that in vitiligo patients. The proportion of major depressive disorders (MDD) was higher among psoriasis patients 15(30.0%) compared to vitiligo patients 04(8.0%). However, no statistical difference was found between two groups of patients in terms of anxiety disorders (8% in psoriasis and 12% in vitiligo patients). In patients with psoriasis, MDD was found highest (30.0%) followed by anxiety disorders (8.0%), adjustment disorder (4.0%) and somatoform disorder not otherwise specified (2.0%). Whereas, among the vitiligo patients, anxiety disorder was found highest (12.0%) followed by MDD (8.0%). The Present study showed significant association of psychiatric morbidities in these two dermatological diseases (psoriasis and vitiligo) with the variables of the study population. Conclusion: It has been found in Bangladesh that the psychiatric morbidity is higher among the patients with psoriasis than vitiligo.     This article is based on the current and future coal power plants of Bangladesh. Although, it is known to all that, coal fired power plants are the great sources of carbon and other pollutant ingredients. But it has several positive impacts for developing countries like Bangladesh, where there is a lack of natural resources, lands and unstable economy. Bangladesh government has a vision to supply the electricity all over the country of Bangladesh, from Teknaf to Tetulia, and also for the remote islands also. In this paper, energy demand and vision of Bangladesh government is discussed in section 1. Section 2, gives the answer, why coal fired power plant is necessary for Bangladesh. In section 3, impacts of coal fired power plant is discussed and showed all current power plants in a table. Section 4 comprises with the future of coal fired power plant in Bangladesh

    Study on physicochemical status, bacterial analysis and its correlation

    Swimming pool, as a recreational facility is now a part of current lifestyle that offers social and health benefits. More demand for hotels with swimming pool facility and are highly used during peak seasons. However swimming pool could become a pooling medium of various bacteria came from the bathers, air and soils thus risk of water-borne disease and impose hazard to human health. Therefore, a well disinfected swimming pool that meets the minimum standard requirement must be reached. This study aimed to assess the status of physicochemical parameters including free chlorine, pH, and temperature and to assess status of bacteria analysis of swimming pool water samples. 11 swimming pool water samples were taken from hotels in Klang valley, Malaysia. The physicochemical parameters were tested using colorimetric method using N,N-diethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine and bacteria analysis were obtained by standard plate count (SPC) method. Results are presented in mean and standard deviation. Correlation coefficient is obtained by Pearson’s correlation statistical test. Results showed mean of temperature 29.64±1.430C, pH 7.56±0.40, free chlorine 1.22±1.16 ppm and bacterial SPC 4,825.64±8,409.16cfu/ml. Correlation-coefficient between temperature and SPC r: 0.71. The findings showed current physicochemical status of hotel swimming pool water samples met the minimum standard requirement. However, the bacterial SPC is highly above acceptable range and positively correlated to temperature. This indicates bacterial count increase with temperature rise despite of acceptable chlorine level. The acceptable level of chlorine as disinfectant is insufficient to oxidize bacteria thus may put the swimming pool water at risk of spreading water borne diseases. This finding suggests increase dosage of chlorine is required to maintain swimming pool sanitation during hot season in order to provide a safe water recreational facility.     Evaluation of phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts of Sonchus asper (L.) Hill

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Sonchus asper </it>(SA) is traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments associated with liver, lungs and kidneys. This study was aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of nonpolar (hexane, SAHE; ethyl acetate, SAEE and chloroform, SACE) and polar (methanol, SAME) crude extracts of the whole plant.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To achieve these goals, several parameters including free-radical (DPPH<sup>•</sup>, ABTS<sup>•+</sup>, H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2 </sub>and <sup>•</sup>OH) scavenging, iron chelating activity, scavenging of superoxide radicals, total flavonoids and total phenolic content (TPC) were examined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The SA extracts presented a remarkable capacity to scavenge all the tested reactive species with IC<sub>50 </sub>values being found at the μg ⁄ ml level. The SAME was shown to have the highest TPCs while lowest IC<sub>50 </sub>values for the DPPH<sup>•</sup>, ABTS<sup>•+ </sup>radical scavenging capacities and iron chelating scavenging efficiency, moreover, SAME had best activities in scavenging of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide as well as potently scavenged the hydroxyl radicals.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results suggest the potential of <it>S. asper </it>as a medicine against free-radical-associated oxidative damage.</p

    Decline in subarachnoid haemorrhage volumes associated with the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

    BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study\u27s objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before (1 year and immediately before) and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020. The prior 1-year control period (1 March-31 May 2019) was obtained to account for seasonal variation. FINDINGS: There was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5% (95% CI -24.3% to -20.7%, p\u3c0.0001). Embolisation of ruptured aneurysms declined with 1170-1035 procedures, respectively, representing an 11.5% (95%CI -13.5% to -9.8%, p=0.002) relative drop. Subgroup analysis was noted for aneurysmal SAH hospitalisation decline from 834 to 626 hospitalisations, a 24.9% relative decline (95% CI -28.0% to -22.1%, p\u3c0.0001). A relative increase in ruptured aneurysm coiling was noted in low coiling volume hospitals of 41.1% (95% CI 32.3% to 50.6%, p=0.008) despite a decrease in SAH admissions in this tertile. INTERPRETATION: There was a relative decrease in the volume of SAH hospitalisations, aneurysmal SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm embolisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings in SAH are consistent with a decrease in other emergencies, such as stroke and myocardial infarction
