    Brownian motion of a charged particle driven internally by correlated noise

    We give an exact solution to the generalized Langevin equation of motion of a charged Brownian particle in a uniform magnetic field that is driven internally by an exponentially-correlated stochastic force. A strong dissipation regime is described in which the ensemble-averaged fluctuations of the velocity exhibit transient oscillations that arise from memory effects. Also, we calculate generalized diffusion coefficients describing the transport of these particles and briefly discuss how they are affected by the magnetic field strength and correlation time. Our asymptotic results are extended to the general case of internal driving by correlated Gaussian stochastic forces with finite autocorrelation times.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures with subfigures, RevTeX, v2: revise

    Iliolumbar membrane, a newly recognised structure in the back

    Despite intensive research in the anatomical sciences for the last two centuries, some structures of the human body still remain controversial or incompletely described. We describe a new membranous fascial anatomical entity, which we refer to as the iliolumbar membrane (ILM). During the 2004-2005 academic semesters at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine we dissected 40 human cadavers fixed in formalin-alcohol-phenol solution. Iliolumbar membrane is a thick connective tissue structure, deep to the skin, originating from the fibres of the thoracolumbar fascia at the lateral border of the erector spinae. It runs inferior to the superior border of the iliac crest, lateral to the posterior superior iliac spine, overlying the iliac crest at the level of the 4th lumbar vertebra. Iliolumbar membrane terminates within subcutaneous fat, where it divides into multiple layers. All cadavers showed considerable variation in the blending of the membrane’s multiple layers with the subcutaneous fat. However, all specimens consistently showed a uniform appearance of ILM at the point of origin. Iliolumbar membrane could be demonstrated objectively by ultrasound examination with a frequency of 7.5 MHz and also with a Stryker endoscope. A hypothesis is put forth, conjecturing that this new structure may have relevance in creating a natural barrier between the musculature of the back and the muscles of the gluteal region, similar to Scarpa’s fascia of the anterior abdominal wall

    Assessment of Adolescent Attachment Patterns of College Students

    Attachment patterns are the emotional bond formed with the people around us.This study determined the different adolescent attachment patterns (parent, peer, and romantic) and compared them to demographic variables including age, sex, and marital status. Online survey served as the primary means of data collection. A total of 60 students taking BS Human Ecology major in Family Development at the University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna, Philippines were the respondents of the study. Results revealed higher peer trust and communication than with their parents. Alienation is a little more experienced with peers than with their parents. More so, trust dimension was found to have statistically significant different means. In terms of romantic patterns, secure and fearful attachments best describe the students. However, fearful attachment was also reported as the least likely to describe them, followed by dismissing attachment

    Zebrafish Bioassay-guided Microfractionation for the Rapid in vivo Identification of Pharmacologically Active Natural Products

    The rapid acquisition of structural and bioactivity information on natural products (NPs) at the sub- milligram scale is key for performing efficient bioactivity-guided isolations. Zebrafish offer the possibility of rapid in vivo bioactivity analysis of small molecules at the microgram scale – an attractive feature when combined with high-resolution fractionation technologies and analytical methods such as UHPLC-TOF-MS and microflow NMR. Numerous biomedically relevant assays are now available in zebrafish, encompassing most indication areas. Zebrafish also provide the possibility to screen bioactive compounds for potential hepato-, cardio-, and neurotoxicities at a very early stage in the drug discovery process. Here we describe two strategies using zebrafish bioassays for the high-resolution in vivo bioactivity profiling of medicinal plants, using either a one-step or a two-step procedure for active compound isolation directly into 96-well plates. The analysis of the microfractions by microflow NMR in combination with UHPLC-TOF-MS of the extract enables the rapid dereplication of compounds and an estimation of their microgram quantities for zebrafish bioassays. Both the one-step and the two-step isolation procedures enable a rapid estimation of the bioactive potential of NPs directly from crude extracts. In summary, we present an in vivo , microgram-scale NP discovery platform combining zebrafish bioassays with microscale analytics to identify, isolate and evaluate pharmacologically active NPs

    Bridging the gap: Increasing awareness of sex differences in opioid addiction using social media platforms

    HONORABLE MENTION Background: Current efforts to combat the opioid epidemic in the United States do not take into account the sex differences in opioid response, prescription, use, and addiction. There is a need for medical professionals and the general public to understand these differences to properly prevent, address, and treat opioid addiction. Healthcare professionals and patients often use the Internet and social networking websites to access and share medical information. These platforms provide an innovative way to educate these groups on various topics in medicine. The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) created the Opioid Addiction in Women Task Force to positively impact care for women with opioid addiction. Objectives: Increase health literacy surrounding sex differences in opioid addiction in the general public and healthcare providers via social media platforms Methods/Research: The AMWA Opioid Task Force consists of physicians and medical students across the country who meet virtually each month. With guidance from supervising physicians, educational infographics, pamphlets, and videos are created to facilitate the dissemination of complex scientiffc data in a simple and engaging manner. Information is subsequently shared via social media platforms, such as Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, where they can be easily accessed by healthcare providers, medical students, and the public. Conclusions/Impact: This is one of the few organizations with national exposure that highlights sex and gender differences in the opioid crisis and aims to increase health literacy for both the general public and health care providers. We have successfully distributed information regarding sex differences in opioid addiction during Women’s Health Week 2020 on the national AMWA website, Instagram, and Twitter. Our future plans include producing and sharing videos on YouTube about opioids, addiction, and pain management, especially in women.
