Getting more than a fair share: nutrition of worker larvae related to social parasitism in the Cape honey bee Apis mellifera capensis
Besides activation of ovaries and thelytokous reproduction of Cape workers,
larval nutrition is an important aspect in parasitism of the African honey bee.
When reared by workers of other subspecies, Cape larvae receive more food which
is slightly more royal jelly-like. This results in worker-queen intermediates,
with reduced pollen combs, enlarged spermathecae and higher numbers of ovarioles.
The intermediates weigh more and develop faster than normal workers. The appearance
of worker-queen intermediates probably affects parasitism of the African honey bee
colonies by Cape workers. Different levels of larval nutrition resulting in less
distinct caste differentiation may be important for the reproductive success of Cape
workers in their own colonies. Similar processes, albeit less pronounced, may occur
in colonies of other subspecies
Causalities of war: The connection between type VI secretion system and microbiota
Cellular Microbiology published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Microbiota niches have space and/or nutrient restrictions, which has led to the coevolution of cooperation, specialisation, and competition within the population. Different animal and environmental niches contain defined resident microbiota that tend to be stable over time and offer protection against undesired intruders. Yet fluxes can occur, which alter the composition of a bacterial population. In humans, the microbiota are now considered a key contributor to maintenance of health and homeostasis, and its alteration leads to dysbiosis. The bacterial type VI secretion system (T6SS) transports proteins into the environment, directly into host cells or can function as an antibacterial weapon by killing surrounding competitors. Upon contact with neighbouring cells, the T6SS fires, delivering a payload of effector proteins. In the absence of an immunity protein, this results in growth inhibition or death of prey leading to a competitive advantage for the attacker. It is becoming apparent that the T6SS has a role in modulating and shaping the microbiota at multiple levels, which is the focus of this review. Comparative proteomics of uropathogenic Escherichia coli during growth in human urine identify UCA-like (UCL) fimbriae as an adherence factor involved in biofilm formation and binding to uroepithelial cells
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the primary cause of urinary tract infection (UTI) in humans. For the successful colonisation of the human urinary tract, UPEC employ a diverse collection of secreted or surface-exposed virulence factors including toxins, iron acquisition systems and adhesins. In this study, a comparative proteomic approach was utilised to define the UPEC pan and core surface proteome following growth in pooled human urine. Identified proteins were investigated for subcellular origin, prevalence and homology to characterised virulence factors. Fourteen core surface proteins were identified, as well as eleven iron uptake receptor proteins and four distinct fimbrial types, including type 1, P, F1C/S and a previously uncharacterised fimbrial type, designated UCA-like (UCL) fimbriae in this study. These pathogenicity island (PAI)-associated fimbriae are related to UCA fimbriae of Proteus mirabilis, associated with UPEC and exclusively found in members of the E. coli B2 and D phylogroup. We further demonstrated that UCL fimbriae promote significant biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces and mediate specific attachment to exfoliated human uroepithelial cells. Combined, this study has defined the surface proteomic profiles and core surface proteome of UPEC during growth in human urine and identified a new type of fimbriae that may contribute to UTI
Strain evolution in GaN Nanowires: from free-surface objects to coalesced templates
Top-down fabricated GaN nanowires, 250 nm in diameter and with various
heights, have been used to experimentally determine the evolution of strain
along the vertical direction of 1-dimensional objects. X-ray diffraction and
photoluminescence techniques have been used to obtain the strain profile inside
the nanowires from their base to their top facet for both initial compressive
and tensile strains. The relaxation behaviors derived from optical and
structural characterizations perfectly match the numerical results of
calculations based on a continuous media approach. By monitoring the elastic
relaxation enabled by the lateral free-surfaces, the height from which the
nanowires can be considered strain-free has been estimated. Based on this
result, NWs sufficiently high to be strain-free have been coalesced to form a
continuous GaN layer. X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and
cathodoluminescence clearly show that despite the initial strain-free nanowires
template, the final GaN layer is strained
A narrow bimalleolar width is a risk factor for ankle inversion injury in male military recruits: A prospective study

injuries in athletic populations. Research that prospectively identifies characteristics
associated with this injury is lacking. This prospective study compared baseline
anthropometric and biomechanical gait characteristics of military recruits who sustained
an ankle inversion injury during training, with those who remained injury-free.
Methods: Bilateral plantar pressure and three-dimensional lower limb kinematics were
recorded in 1065 male, injury-free military recruits, during barefoot running. Injuries that
occurred during the 32-week recruit training programme were subsequently recorded.
Data were compared between recruits who sustained an ankle inversion injury during
training (n=27) and a sample (n=120) of those who completed training injury-free. A
logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for this injury.
Findings: A narrower bimalleolar width and an earlier peak pressure under the fifth
metatarsal were predictors of ankle inversion injury. Those who sustained an ankle
inversion injury also had a lower body mass, body mass index, and a smaller calf girth
than those who completed training injury-free.
Interpretation: Anthropometric and dynamic gait characteristics have been identified
that may predispose recruits to an ankle inversion injury during Royal Marine recruit
training, allowing identification of recruits at higher risk at the start of training
"Endomicrobia" and Other Bacteria Associated with the Hindgut of Dermolepida albohirtum Larvae
Symbiotic bacteria residing in the hindgut chambers of scarab beetle larvae may be useful in paratransgenic approaches to reduce larval root-feeding activities on agricultural crops. We compared the bacterial community profiles associated with the hindgut walls of individual Dermolepida albohirtum third-instar larvae over 2 years and those associated with their plant root food source among different geographic regions. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis was used with universal and Actinobacteria-specific 16S rRNA primers to reveal a number of taxa that were found consistently in all D. albohirtum larvae but not in samples from their food source, sugarcane roots. These taxa included representatives from the "Endomicrobia," Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria and were related to previously described bacteria from the intestines of other scarab larvae and termites. These universally distributed taxa have the potential to form vertically transmitted symbiotic associations with these insects
Barriers to healthcare access and experiences of stigma: Findings from a coproduced Long Covid case-finding study
Background and Aim
Long Covid is often stigmatised, particularly in people who are disadvantaged within society. This may prevent them from seeking help and could lead to widening health inequalities. This coproduced study with a Community Advisory Board (CAB) of people with Long Covid aimed to understand healthcare and wider barriers and stigma experienced by people with probable Long Covid.
Methods
An active case finding approach was employed to find adults with probable, but not yet clinically diagnosed, Long Covid in two localities in London (Camden and Merton) and Derbyshire, England. Interviews explored the barriers to care and the stigma faced by participants and were analysed thematically. This study forms part of the STIMULATE-ICP Collaboration.
Findings
Twenty-three interviews were completed. Participants reported limited awareness of what Long Covid is and the available pathways to management. There was considerable self-doubt among participants, sometimes reinforced by interactions with healthcare professionals (HCPs). Participants questioned their deservedness in seeking healthcare support for their symptoms. Hesitancy to engage with healthcare services was motivated by fear of needing more investigation and concerns regarding judgement about the ability to carry out caregiving responsibilities. It was also motivated by the complexity of the clinical presentation and fear of all symptoms being attributed to poor mental health. Participants also reported trying to avoid overburdening the health system. These difficulties were compounded by experiences of stigma and discrimination. The emerging themes reaffirmed a framework of epistemic injustice in relation to Long Covid, where creating, interpreting and conveying knowledge has varied credibility based on the teller's identity characteristics and/or the level of their interpretive resources.
Conclusion
We have codeveloped recommendations based on the findings. These include early signposting to services, dedicating protected time to listening to people with Long Covid, providing a holistic approach in care pathways, and working to mitigate stigma. Regardless of the diagnosis, people experiencing new symptoms must be encouraged to seek timely medical help. Clear public health messaging is needed among communities already disadvantaged by epistemic injustice to raise awareness of Long Covid, and to share stories that encourage seeking care and to illustrate the adverse effects of stigma
Dietary Interventions in the Management of Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review and Best-Evidence Synthesis
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterised by chronic widespread pain alongside fatigue, poor sleep quality and numerous comorbidities. It is estimated to have a worldwide prevalence of 1.78%, with a predominance in females. Treatment interventions for fibromyalgia have limited success, leading to many patients seeking alternative forms of treatment, including modifications to their diet and lifestyle. The effectiveness of dietary changes in fibromyalgia has not been widely researched or evaluated. This systematic review identified twenty-two studies, including 18 randomised control trials (RCTs) and four cohort studies which were eligible for inclusion. In total these studies investigated 17 different nutritional interventions. Significant improvements in reported pain were observed for those following a vegan diet, as well as with the low fermentable oligo di-mono-saccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diets. Supplementation with Chlorella green algae, coenzyme Q10, acetyl-l-carnitine or a combination of vitamin C and E significantly improved measures of pain. Interpretation of these studies was limited due to the frequent poor quality of the study design, the wide heterogeneity between studies, the small sample size and a high degree of bias. Therefore, there is insufficient evidence to recommend any one particular nutritional intervention for the management of fibromyalgia and further research is needed
