Three-photon resonant four-photon ionization of H_2 via the C^1 â_u state
Ab initio calculations are presented for the vibrational branching ratios in three-photon resonant four-photon ionization of H_2 via the C^1Î _u state. Energy and internuclear distance dependences of the boundfree electronic transition matrix element are explicitly included to estimate deviations from the Franck-Condon approximation. While our calculated branching ratios confirm certain important trends seen experimentally, some differences remain
Effectiveness of nurse home-visiting for disadvantaged families: results of a natural experiment
Extent: 9p.Objective: To evaluate the effects of a postnatal home-visiting programme delivered by community health nurses to socially disadvantaged mothers in South Australia. Design: The intervention group of 428 mothers lived in metropolitan Adelaide and the comparison group of 239 mothers lived in regional towns where the programme was not yet available. All participating mothers met health service eligibility criteria for enrolment in the home-visiting programme. Participants in both groups were assessed at baseline (mean child age=14.4â
weeks SD=2.3), prior to programme enrolment, and again when the children were aged 9, 18 and 24â
months. Setting: State-wide community child health service. Participants: 667 socially disadvantaged mothers enrolled consecutively. 487 mothers (73%) completed the 24-month assessment. Intervention: Two-year postnatal home-visiting programme based on the Family Partnership Model. Primary outcome measures: Parent Stress Index (PSI), Kessler Psychological Distress Scale and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Results: Mixed models adjusting for baseline differences were used to compare outcomes in the two groups. The mothers in the home-visiting group reported greater improvement on the PSI subscales assessing a mother's perceptions on the quality of their relationship with their child (1.10, 95% CI 0.06 to 2.14) and satisfaction with their role as parents (0.46, 95% CI â0.15 to 1.07) than mothers in the comparison group. With the exception of childhood sleeping problems, there were no other significant differences in the outcomes across the two groups. Conclusions: The findings suggest that home-visiting programmes delivered by community health nurses as part of routine clinical practice have the potential to improve maternalâchild relationships and help mothers adjust to their role as parents.Michael Gifford Sawyer, Linda Frost, Kerrie Bowering, John Lync
Space shuttle OMS helium regulator design and development
Analysis, design, fabrication and design verification testing was conducted on the technological feasiblity of the helium pressurization regulator for the space shuttle orbital maneuvering system application. A prototype regulator was fabricated which was a single-stage design featuring the most reliable and lowest cost concept. A tradeoff study on regulator concepts indicated that a single-stage regulator with a lever arm between the valve and the actuator section would offer significant weight savings. Damping concepts were tested to determine the amount of damping required to restrict actuator travel during vibration. Component design parameters such as spring rates, effective area, contamination cutting, and damping were determined by test prior to regulator final assembly. The unit was subjected to performance testing at widely ranging flow rates, temperatures, inlet pressures, and random vibration levels. Photoionization cross sections of rovibrational levels of the B^1ÎŁ^+_u state of H_2
We report theoretical cross sections for direct photoionization of specific rovibrational levels of the Bâ^1ÎŁ^+_u electronic state of H_2. The calculated cross sections differ considerably from values recently determined by resonant enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) studies. In an attempt to understand the disagreement, we analyze in detail the REMPI dynamics and find that the multiphoton ionization probability is extremely sensitive to the spatial and temporal profiles of the laser pulses. Accurate characterization of laser profiles and their jitter is therefore necessary for a comparison between theory and experiment

Free healthy breakfasts in primary schools: A cluster randomised controlled trial of a policy intervention in Wales, UK
Objective: The present study evaluated the impact of a national school programme of universal free healthy breakfast provision in Wales, UK.
Design: A cluster randomised controlled trial with repeated cross-sectional design and a 12-month follow-up. Primary outcomes were breakfast skipping, breakfast diet and episodic memory. Secondary outcomes were frequency of eating breakfast at home and at school, breakfast attitudes, rest-of-day diet and class behaviour.
Setting: Primary schools in nine local education authority areas.
Subjects: A total of 4350 students (aged 9â11 years) at baseline and 4472 at follow-up in 111 schools.
Results: Students in intervention schools reported significantly higher numbers of healthy food items consumed at breakfast and more positive attitudes towards breakfast eating at 12 months. Parents in intervention schools reported significantly higher rates of consumption of breakfast at school and correspondingly lower rates of breakfast consumption at home. No other significant differences were found.
Conclusions: The intervention did not reduce breakfast skipping; rather, pupils substituted breakfast at home for breakfast at school. However, there were improvements in childrenâs nutritional intake at breakfast time, if not the rest of the day, and more positive attitudes to breakfast, which may have implications for life-course dietary behaviours. There was no impact on episodic memory or classroom behaviour, which may require targeting breakfast skippers
Infrared Absorption in Mg2Ge
Optical-absorption measurements on n- and p-type Mg2Ge single crystals were made at wavelengths between 1.5 and 25 ÎŒ at temperatures between 4.2 and 300°K. The absorption edge in p-type crystals arises from allowed indirect transitions. The energy gap is 0.570 eV at 0°K and the phonon involved has an energy of 0.025 eV. At higher temperatures the temperature dependence of the energy gap is -1.8Ă10â4 eV/deg. At longer wavelengths p-type crystals exhibit absorption bands interpreted as being caused by transitions between three valence bands at the center of the Brillouin zone as in germanium. The spin-orbit splitting of these bands is 0.20 eV and the ratio of heavy-hole mass to light-hole mass is 6±1. The n-type samples have an absorption band at 0.58 eV (0°K) of uncertain origin, and λ2.5 free-carrier absorption, indicating optical-mode scattering
