The Narrative Cores of Neighbourhood Reputation as Revealed by Temporal Discourses

Neighbourhood reputation is an elusive but much discussed and studied concept that greatly influences people's perceptions of and attitudes towards the residential areas of a city. The temporality related to neighbourhood reputation is a less studied topic. The emergence of a place-based reputation is a complex social, spatial, temporal, and cultural process that is affected by the neighbourhood's residents and visitors, local and social media, and non-residents who are knowledgeable about the area. We based our study of reputation on interviews with focus groups, city officials, and politicians. According to the interview data, neighbourhood reputation is articulated through four temporal discourses: the past, presentation, representation, and the future. Ultimately, underlying these four temporal discourses we found causes for neighbourhood reputation and stigmatisation that we named as narrative cores.© 2024 The Authors. Utgångspunkterna för denna publikation baserar sig på boken boken Platsbaserat samhälle som perspektiv. Boken publicerades av arbets- och näringsministeriet sommaren 2016 och består av 13 artiklar. I publikationen struktureras det i boken presenterade innehållet i det platsbaserade perspektivet med hjälp av aktörsperspektivet som grundar sig på en Quadruple Helix-model

Reconsidering neighbourhood communality through the lens of intersectionality : resident and authority perspectives

This article examines how neighbourhood communality emerges and is restricted by a range of conditions, a topic that has received increasing attention in current research yet remains unresolved. The concept of communality provides a lens through which to examine how a variety of intersectional factors related to the informants’ social status affect the perceptions of the sense of community in the study’s focus neighbourhoods in Vaasa, Finland, where interview materials were gathered. The analysis scrutinizes the ways in which local institutions, the environment and residents interact with the three types of narration gestalts – inclusion, recollection and segregation – construing the idea of communality in the studied neighbourhoods. The study combines actor-network theory with intersectionality to gain insight into how and where people come together and interact. It became clear that the target neighbourhoods and people who live there are marginalized and seen as ‘others’ because of their socioeconomic status and other demographics.© 2023 The Author(s). Yrittäjyyden edistäminen maaseutuhallinnossa : paikkasokeaa, paikkatietoista ja paikkaperustaista kehittämistä

Artikkelissa tulkitaan eksogeenisen, endogeenisen ja neoendogeenisen kehittämisen näkökulmia suhteessa laajempaan maaseudun kehittämisen teoriaperintöön. Tähän perustuen määritellään kolme yrittäjyyden edistämisen diskurssia: 1) paikkasokea, 2) paikkatietoinen ja 3) paikkaperustainen hallinto. Diskurssianalyysin keinoin tarkastellaan, millaisina nykyhetkeen kiinnittyvinä puhetapoina alueita ja paikkoja sanoitetaan maaseutuhallinnon toimijoiden ja yrittäjien puheessa maaseudun kehittämisohjelman yritystukien valmistelun ja toimeenpanon yhteydessä. Lisäksi pohditaan, millaisia jännitteitä näiden diskurssien välillä ilmenee. Tutkimuksen kontekstina on maaseudun erilaistuva ja alueelliseen vaihteluun perustuva kehitys Suomessa sekä siihen vaikuttava EU:n maaseutupolitiikka. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella maaseudun kehittämisohjelman toteutus vaikuttaa yritysten toimintaedellytyksiin paikkasokeasti tai opportunistisen paikkatietoisesti, mikä ei aidosti tue alueen omista tarpeista nousevaa kehittämistä.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

Maapallon ulkopuolisen asuttamisen maantiedettä yläkoululaisten ja aikuisten kuvittelemana

Tässä artikkelissa tutkitaan, millaiseksi aikuiset ja yläkoululaiset kuvittelevat asumisen Maan ulkopuolella, millaiset ihmismaantieteen keskeiset teemat nousevat tällöin esille ja miten tätä tietoa voidaan hyödyntää todellisessa avaruustoiminnassa? Aineisto kerättiin avaruusaiheisilla esseekirjoituksilla, joita yläkoululaiset ja aikuiset kirjoittivat. Esseissä ilmeni ihmismaantieteen keskeisiä teemoja kuviteltaessa asumista avaruudessa, kuten asuttaminen (dwelling), koti (home), valta, ihmisen ja ympäristön välinen suhde, geopolitiikka, kuuluminen (belonging) ja identiteetti. Molempien ryhmien esseet kuvasivat usein koti-ikävää ja luonnon kaipuuta avaruudessa. Yläkoululaisten esseet kuvasivat enemmän kouluelämää ja vapaa-aikaa, kun taas aikuiset keskittyivät työolosuhteisiin avaruudessa. Yläkoululaisten esseet olivat hieman useammin science fictionin ja romantiikan sävyttämiä, ja niissä ilmeni vahva usko demokratian ja monikulttuurisuuden toimivuuteen avaruuden asuttamisessa. Aikuisten esseissä avaruuden asuttamista luonnehdittiin harvainvallan, ihmisten välisten konfliktien ja pääomataloudellisten intressien leimaamaksi. Yläkoululaiset ja aikuiset olivat yhtä mieltä siitä, että ihmisten siteet Maahan eivät katkea, vaikka avaruutta onnistuttaisiin asuttamaan. Arkielämän näkökulmaa avaruuden asuttamiseen tarvitaan suurten avaruusalan toimijoiden rinnalle muun muassa avaruusrakettien, avaruusasemien, mahdollisten avaruussiirtokuntien ja avaruusdemokratian kehittämisessä.The geography of extra-terrestrial settlement imagined by elementary school pupils and adults. This article explores how adults and elementary school pupils imagined living outside the Earth to be like, how themes of human geography emerge in these imaginings and how can these findings help real space plans? The data was collected by organizing a space-themed essay writing for elementary school pupils and adults. Essays reflected key themes of human geography in living in the space such as dwelling, home, power, human-environment-relationship, geopolitics, belonging and identity. The essays of both groups described often home-sickness and longing for nature in the space. The essays of the pupils described more school life and leisure, while adults focused on working conditions in space. Essays of the pupils were slightly more influenced by fiction and romanticism, and showed firm belief in democracy and multiculturalism in inhabiting space. In essays of the adults` human space inhabitation was characterized by the rule of the few, conflicts between humans and capitalist economy. The pupils and adults agreed that humans cannot break their ties with the Earth, if they succeed in living in the space. Everyday life perspective on living in the space is needed alongside with major space operators in the development of space rockets, space stations, potential space colonies and space democracy.© 2023 Mikko Karhu, Ilkka Luoto, Antti Mäenpää.
