The importance of social networks in the Norwegian firewood industry

Accepted version of an article from journal of Biomass and BioenergyThis study examines the relationship between social network size, innovation and firm performance among firewood producers in Norway. Moreover, it investigates how this relationship is affected both by the structure and variations in networks and by firm size and age. A questionnaire-based survey was sent to managers of firms (including one-person firms) in the firewood industry in Norway. A total of 645 usable replies were received, and the theoretical model was tested using structural equation modeling. The findings show that social network size has a positive effect on firm performance via innovation by firewood producers. Furthermore, the results show that firewood producers with fewer involved family members and more variation in occupation and entrepreneurial experience in their networks benefit more from larger social networks than other producers do

Energetic eruptions leading to a peculiar hydrogen-rich explosion of a massive star

Every supernova so far observed has been considered to be the terminal explosion of a star. Moreover, all supernovae with absorption lines in their spectra show those lines decreasing in velocity over time, as the ejecta expand and thin, revealing slower-moving material that was previously hidden. In addition, every supernova that exhibits the absorption lines of hydrogen has one main light-curve peak, or a plateau in luminosity, lasting approximately 100 days before declining1. Here we report observations of iPTF14hls, an event that has spectra identical to a hydrogen-rich core-collapse supernova, but characteristics that differ extensively from those of known supernovae. The light curve has at least five peaks and remains bright for more than 600 days; the absorption lines show little to no decrease in velocity; and the radius of the line-forming region is more than an order of magnitude bigger than the radius of the photosphere derived from the continuum emission. These characteristics are consistent with a shell of several tens of solar masses ejected by the progenitor star at supernova-level energies a few hundred days before a terminal explosion. Another possible eruption was recorded at the same position in 1954. Multiple energetic pre-supernova eruptions are expected to occur in stars of 95 to 130 solar masses, which experience the pulsational pair instability2,3,4,5. Estudo de caso: a mudança organizacional no SERPRO provocada pela implantação do Método Ágil

Nos dias atuais, o mercado tem apresentado demandas com altos níveis de exigências com relação à qualidade do serviço contratado. Apesar do Serviço Federal de Processamento de Dados (SERPRO) prestar serviços aos setores públicos, ele não foge das constantes cobranças de seus clientes para melhoria do serviço, oferecendo maior velocidade nas entregas dos produtos e tempestividade nas ações para correção de falhas. Para atender a estas necessidades, o SERPRO optou por adotar os métodos ágeis em todas as áreas da empresa de modo que possibilite a reformulação dos seus modelos de gestão e ações operacionais entre as áreas do SERPRO, tornando o processo de atendimento mais eficiente e produtivo. Dentre as ações estratégicas adotadas, houve a execução de seis projetos pilotos que utilizaram o scrum como metodologia ágil de gestão. Estes projetos serviram como experimentação para analisar na prática os efeitos da implantação dos métodos ágeis na organização. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar como a mudança para o ágil pôde tornar mais eficiente o processo de gestão de desenvolvimento de software no SERPRO dentro do cenário dos projetos piloto. O delineamento da pesquisa se deu através de um estudo de caso, cuja fonte de dados foi uma pesquisa documental na avaliação de satisfação dos clientes do SERPRO e nos meios corporativos de comunicação, que divulgaram os resultados das execuções dos projetos pilotos. A análise realizada buscou identificar as potencialidades dos métodos ágeis no contexto do SERPRO, assim como os seus limites. Como resultado deste estudo temos que, independente dos desafios observados, a utilização do ágil no SERPRO trouxe importantes benefícios, principalmente quanto a um ambiente de trabalho mais produtivo, clientes mais satisfeitos e maior reconhecimento de qualidade dos serviços prestados
