Some sources of variation in the assessment when introducing unaccounted mortality due to discarding practices. The case of Southern Four spot megrim stock.
Four spot megrim (Lepidorhombus boscii) is widely distributed in Atlantic waters form Iceland to
Cape Bojador. In ICES Divisions VIIIc and IXa, Portuguese and Spanish ships captured this
species as by-catch mainly in mixed bottom trawl fisheries. Only one exploitation unit of this
species is assessed (from Divisions VIIIc and IXa) in the ICES Working Group of Hake, Monk
and Megrim. Discard data are not used in the assessment of this species, though they are
considered significantly high for younger ages. Discards data are available for Spanish trawlers
for 1993, 1994, 1997, and the period from 1999 to 2001. A simulation using discard data was
made to avoid the underestimation of mortality and recruitment. Due to the change in January
1990 in the minimum legal size for this species in this area, it was decided not to use historical
information previous to this year, as it is supposed that this change could substantially affect the
fleet discard pattern. Different options were considered as the way of raising: by effort (number
of trips, hour of trawling) or by landings (in weight or in number). Reasons for the final choices
are explained for all options considered. The way to introduce discards data in the VPA
procedure for assessment was through the catch at age matrix since we considered that no fish
of this species survive after being discarded. Differences in yield of Short-term and Mediumterm
projections were observed
Estimation of biomass of horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus L.) in northern-Spain ( Nortbern IXa and VIIIc ) using the daily egg production method.
In order to estimate the spawning stock biomass of horse mackerel
in the North Atlantic Spanish waters, a series of egg and adult
cruises were carried out by lEO (Instituto Español de Oceanografía)
The survey was carried out from 23 April to 25 May 1992. A total
of 627 plankton samples and 37 adults samples were collected.
A total daily egg production of 3.3 X 1012 egg (SE = 7.26 X 1011
,
CV = 0.22) was estimated for the whole area sarnpled (ICES Division
Vlllc and subdivision northern IXa north). The estirnate of horse
mackerel spawning biornass ranged from 486,549 tons (CV = 0.34, when
using adult pararneter estirnates exclusively frorn the Spanish
survey, down to 368,814 tn (C = 0.32), when alternatively using an
estimate of relative batch fecundity from the southern region of
horse rnackerel western stock
ABSTRACT Anthropometrics analysis and food consumption of athletes of wheelchair basketball in the metropolitan area of São PauloPurpose: Analyze the anthropometric profile and dietary intake of athlete’s wheelchair basketball over the metropolitan region of São Paulo. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational study with a sample of basketball players on wheels. The project was approved by the COER São Camilo University Center. The nutritional status was measured from skinfolds and body circumferences and dietary intake was assessed using a 24-hour recall. Results: 12 athletes with a mean age of 29.75 (4.9) years were analyzed. There was average percentage of body fat 26.54% (7.9), with variations in the type of paraplegia. Athletes with higher percentages of fat were the bearers of post- polio syndrome and observed low carbohydrate consumption. Conclusion: We conclude that there is a need for more studies to check the appropriate nutritional needs of this group, being essential the presence of a Nutritionist enabled
AI is a viable alternative to high throughput screening: a 318-target study
: High throughput screening (HTS) is routinely used to identify bioactive small molecules. This requires physical compounds, which limits coverage of accessible chemical space. Computational approaches combined with vast on-demand chemical libraries can access far greater chemical space, provided that the predictive accuracy is sufficient to identify useful molecules. Through the largest and most diverse virtual HTS campaign reported to date, comprising 318 individual projects, we demonstrate that our AtomNet® convolutional neural network successfully finds novel hits across every major therapeutic area and protein class. We address historical limitations of computational screening by demonstrating success for target proteins without known binders, high-quality X-ray crystal structures, or manual cherry-picking of compounds. We show that the molecules selected by the AtomNet® model are novel drug-like scaffolds rather than minor modifications to known bioactive compounds. Our empirical results suggest that computational methods can substantially replace HTS as the first step of small-molecule drug discovery
The article approaches both fleet and resource aspects, describing the Basque fishing sector and the evolution of the different sub-sectors that are part of it. Thereinafter the article is a series of fleet summaries, in which details are provided both of the general characteristics of the fleets and of the state of there sources on which they base their activity
