    Projective Degenerations of K3 Surfaces, Gaussian Maps, and Fano Threefolds

    In this article we exhibit certain projective degenerations of smooth K3K3 surfaces of degree 2g22g-2 in Pg\Bbb P^g (whose Picard group is generated by the hyperplane class), to a union of two rational normal scrolls, and also to a union of planes. As a consequence we prove that the general hyperplane section of such K3K3 surfaces has a corank one Gaussian map, if g=11g=11 or g13g\geq 13. We also prove that the general such hyperplane section lies on a unique K3K3 surface, up to projectivities. Finally we present a new approach to the classification of prime Fano threefolds of index one, which does not rely on the existence of a line.Comment: 24 pages, AMS-LaTeX 1.

    SPLTea 2015: Second International Workshop on Software Product Line Teaching

    International audienceEducation has a key role to play for disseminating the constantly growing body of Software Product Line (SPL) knowledge. Teaching SPLs is challenging; it is unclear, for example , how SPLs can be taught and what is the material available. This workshop aims to explore and explain the current status and ongoing work on teaching SPLs at universities, colleges, and in industry (e.g., by consultants). This second edition will continue the effort made at SPLTea'14. In particular we seek to design and populate an open repository of resources dedicated to SPL teaching

    Engineering studies for fluorescent penetrant inspection with a focus on developer application methods

    Fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) is the most widely used global inspection method, playing a particularly important role in aviation. Given the contribution that reliable implementation of the FPI process can make to flight safety, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has funded a programme to assess the FPI parameters and their role in effective detection of typical flaws. Iowa State University’s Center for NDE (CNDE) has led a team that includes many industry partners from the aviation industry during this six-year programme. The industry partners have provided guidance and prioritisation input, and in many cases access to internal data, samples or use of facilities to support the programme. The focus of the programme has been on quantitative assessment of FPI performance using a combination of data gathering methods, which has included indication luminance as measured using a photometer, UV-A indication appearance using a fluorescence stereomicroscope, and in some cases the more traditional probability of detection (POD) study. Numerous studies have been completed, although results of developer studies will be the focus of this paper. Choice of indication development parameters starts with the selection of the developer form. All four forms have been evaluated during this programme: dry powder, water-soluble, water-suspendible, and nonaqueous wet developers. The results of the developer studies are presented below along with key ‘lessons learned’

    A Generic Architecture For Demand Response: The ALL4Green Approach

    Demand Response is a mechanism used in power grids to manage customers’ power consumption during critical situations (e.g. power shortage). Data centres are good candidates to participate in Demand Response programs due to their high energy use. In this paper, we present a generic architecture to enable Demand Response between Energy Provider and Data Centres realised in All4Green. To this end, we show our three-level concept and then illustrate the building blocks of All4Green’s architectural design. Furthermore, we introduce the novel aspects of GreenSDA and GreenSLA for Energy Provider–Data centre sub-ecosystem as well as Data centre–IT Client sub-ecosystem respectively. In order to further reduce energy consumption and CO2 emission, the notion of data centre federation is introduced: savings can be expected if data centres start to collaborate by exchanging workload. Also, we specify the technological solutions necessary to implement our proposed architectural approach. Finally, we present preliminary proof-of-concept experiments, conducted both on traditional and cloud computing data centres, which show relatively encouraging results

    Recovery of a Digital Image Collection Through the SDSC/UMD/NARA Prototype Persistent Archive

    The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), the University of Maryland, and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) are collaborating on building a pilot persistent archive using and extending data grid and digital library technologies. The current prototype consists of node servers at SDSC, University of Maryland, and NARA, connected through the Storage Request Broker (SRB) data grid middleware, and currently holds several terabytes of NARA selected collections. In particular, a historically important image collection that was on the verge of becoming inaccessible was fully restored and ingested into our pilot system. In this report, we describe the methodology behind our approach to fully restore this image collection and the process used to ingest it into the prototype persistent archive. (UMIACS-TR-2003-105

    New scheme of intermittent benznidazole administration in patients chronically infected with Trypanosoma cruzi: Clinical, parasitological, and serological assessment after three years of follow-up

    In a pilot study, we showed that the intermittent administration of benznidazole in chronic Chagas disease patients resulted in a low rate of treatment suspension and therapeutic failure, as assessed by quantitative PCR (qPCR) at the end of treatment. Here, a 3-year posttreatment follow-up study of the same cohort of patients is presented. The treatment scheme consisted of 12 doses of benznidazole at 5 mg/kg of body weight/day in two daily doses every 5 days. Parasite load, Trypanosoma cruzi-specific antibodies, and serum chemokine levels were measured prior to treatment and after a median follow-up of 36 months posttreatment by DNA minicircle kinetoplastid and nuclear DNA satellite sequence qPCR methods, conventional serological techniques, a Luminex-based assay with recombinant T. cruzi proteins, and a cytometric bead array. At the end of follow-up, 14 of 17 (82%) patients had negative qPCR findings, whereas three of 17 (18%) had detectable nonquantifiable findings by at least one of the qPCR techniques. A decline in parasite-specific antibodies at 12 months posttreatment was confirmed by conventional serological tests and the Luminex assays. Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 levels increased after treatment, whereas monokine induced by gamma interferon levels decreased. New posttreatment electrocardiographic abnormalities were observed in only one patient who had cardiomyopathy prior to treatment. Together, these data strengthen our previous findings by showing that the intermittent administration of benznidazole results in a low rate of treatment suspension, with treatment efficacy comparable to that of a daily dose of 5 mg/kg for 60 days.Fil: Alvarez, María Gabriela.
