    Optimising observing strategies for monitoring animals using drone-mounted thermal infrared cameras

    The proliferation of relatively affordable off-the-shelf drones offers great opportunities for wildlife monitoring and conservation. Similarly the recent reduction in cost of thermal infrared cameras also offers new promise in this field, as they have the advantage over conventional RGB cameras of being able to distinguish animals based on their body heat and being able to detect animals at night. However, the use of drone-mounted thermal infrared cameras comes with several technical challenges. In this paper we address some of these issues, namely thermal contrast problems due to heat from the ground, absorption and emission of thermal infrared radiation by the atmosphere, obscuration by vegetation, and optimizing the flying height of drones for a best balance between covering a large area and being able to accurately image and identify animals of interest. We demonstrate the application of these methods with a case study using field data, and make the first ever detection of the critically endangered riverine rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis) in thermal infrared data.     VISTA Variables in the <i>Vía Láctea</i> (VVV): Halfway Status and Results

    The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey is one of six near-infrared ESO public surveys, and is now in its fourth year of observing. Although far from being complete, the VVV survey has already delivered many results, some directly connected to the intended science goals (detection of variable stars, microlensing events, new star clusters), others concerning more exotic objects, e.g., novae. Now, at the end of the fourth observing period, and comprising roughly 50% of the proposed observations, the status of the survey, as well some of results based on the VVV data, are presented.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

    Adaptive optic demonstrators for extremely large telescopes

    The next generation of ground-based optical/infrared (IR) telescopes will have primary mirrors of up to 42 m. To take advantage of the large potential increase in angular resolution, adaptive optics will be essential to overcome the resolution limits set by atmospheric turbulence. Novel techniques such as Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) and Multi-Object Adaptive Optics (MOAO) are being developed to achieve near diffraction-limited images over large fields-of-view. This thesis concerns the development of MCAO and MOAO pathfinders. Specifically, the construction of CANARY, aMOAO demonstrator, and the on-sky performance and scientific exploitation of the Multi-conjugate Adaptive optics Demonstrator (MAD). CANARY is under construction for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) in La Palma and contains a telescope simulator to allow testing of the set-up in the laboratory. The simulator contains a natural guide star emulator, turbulence phase screens, and telescope relay optics. The work presented here concerns the integration of the various components in relation to numerical models and the CANARY specifications. MAD was a near-IR imager on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. Science demonstration observations were taken of R136, the young, massive cluster situated in the 30 Doradus star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These data were used here to determine the MCAO performance across the ~1’x1’ field-of-view, for different pointings with respect to the guide stars, finding high Strehl ratios and relatively uniform corrections across the fields. The MAD data are then used to construct radial surface brightness profiles for R136, providing new insights into intriguing past results from the Hubble Space Telescope. The MAD data reveal that the profile is strongly asymmetric, removing the need for dramatic dynamical evolution of the cluster in the recent past, and highlighting the importance of considering asymmetries when analysing clusters further afield. The MAD data, combined with other near-IR imaging from the VLT, are then used to investigate the nature of candidate young stellar objects from recent observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

    Using a unique combination of empirical data collected simultaneously by the science camera (INGRID) and the wave front sensor in NAOMI plus the same night profiles of the turbulent layers measured by SLODAR, we discuss the accuracy of the analytic approach to modelling of AO performance. The WFS frames recorded for different atmospheric conditions allow us to make a detailed investigation of the influence of a restricted field of view and sampling of the WFS on the accuracy of the centre of gravity and its propagation to the residual variance. The predictions of Strehl, FWHM and FWHE derived for NAOMI-INGRID using our analytic approach are compared with on-sky performance demonstrated during the commissioning and science observations with NAOMI

    Physical environmental conditions, spawning and early-life stages of an estuarine fish : climate change implications for recruitment in intermittently open estuaries

    Significant variation in the egg and larval survival and juvenile recruitment of estuarine fishes has been linked to fluctuating environmental conditions. This present study compared the distribution and abundance of black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) eggs and yolk-sac larvae between two microtidal estuaries of different flow regimes, where the riverine flow into the Glenelg estuary was around eight times the flow volume into the Hopkins estuary. Samples were collected monthly from September to November at sites along each estuary where vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen (DO) were measured, and vertically stratified sampling of black bream eggs and yolk-sac larvae was conducted using a Schindler sampler. Salt wedge formation was apparent in both estuaries, with significant de-oxygenation of deeper, saline waters. Eggs occurred in a wide range of DO levels but yolk-sac larvae were less common at the lowest levels. Most eggs and yolk-sac larvae were collected in salinities greater than 10. Results suggested that egg mortality was higher in the Hopkins than the Glenelg estuary, which may be associated with the hypoxic conditions characteristic of low-flow conditions. The results have significant implications in terms of climate change that is predicted to lead to warmer, drier conditions in south-eastern Australia, potentially increasing stratification and subsequent hypoxic zones.<br /
