    Cross-validation of the reduced form of the food craving questionnaire -trait using confirmatory factor analysis

    Objective: The Food Craving Questionnaire-Trait (FCQ-T) is commonly used to assess habitual food cravings among individuals. Previous studies have shown that a brief version of this instrument (FCQ-T-r) has good reliability and validity. This article is the first to use Confirmatory factor analysis to examine the psychometric properties of the FCQ-T-r in a cross-validation study. Method: Habitual food cravings, as well as emotion regulation strategies, affective states, and disordered eating behaviors, were investigated in two independent samples of non-clinical adult volunteers (Sample 1: N = 368; Sample 2: N = 246). Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to simultaneously test model fit statistics and dimensionality of the instrument. FCQ-T-r reliability was assessed by computing the composite reliability coefficient. Results: Analysis supported the unidimensional structure of the scale and fit indices were acceptable for both samples. The FCQ-T-r showed excellent reliability and moderate to high correlations with negative affect and disordered eating. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the FCQ-T-r scores can be reliably used to assess habitual cravings in an Italian non-clinical sample of adults. The robustness of these results is tested by a cross-validation of the model using two independent samples. Further research is required to expand on these findings, particularly in children and adolescents

    Anopheline salivary protein genes and gene families: an evolutionary overview after the whole genome sequence of sixteen Anopheles species

    Background: Mosquito saliva is a complex cocktail whose pharmacological properties play an essential role in blood feeding by counteracting host physiological response to tissue injury. Moreover, vector borne pathogens are transmitted to vertebrates and exposed to their immune system in the context of mosquito saliva which, in virtue of its immunomodulatory properties, can modify the local environment at the feeding site and eventually affect pathogen transmission. In addition, the host antibody response to salivary proteins may be used to assess human exposure to mosquito vectors. Even though the role of quite a few mosquito salivary proteins has been clarified in the last decade, we still completely ignore the physiological role of many of them as well as the extent of their involvement in the complex interactions taking place between the mosquito vectors, the pathogens they transmit and the vertebrate host. The recent release of the genomes of 16 Anopheles species offered the opportunity to get insights into function and evolution of salivary protein families in anopheline mosquitoes. Results: Orthologues of fifty three Anopheles gambiae salivary proteins were retrieved and annotated from 18 additional anopheline species belonging to the three subgenera Cellia, Anopheles, and Nyssorhynchus. Our analysis included 824 full-length salivary proteins from 24 different families and allowed the identification of 79 novel salivary genes and re-annotation of 379 wrong predictions. The comparative, structural and phylogenetic analyses yielded an unprecedented view of the anopheline salivary repertoires and of their evolution over 100 million years of anopheline radiation shedding light on mechanisms and evolutionary forces that contributed shaping the anopheline sialomes. Conclusions: We provide here a comprehensive description, classification and evolutionary overview of the main anopheline salivary protein families and identify two novel candidate markers of human exposure to malaria vectors worldwide. This anopheline sialome catalogue, which is easily accessible as hyperlinked spreadsheet, is expected to be useful to the vector biology community and to improve the capacity to gain a deeper understanding of mosquito salivary proteins facilitating their possible exploitation for epidemiological and/or pathogen-vector-host interaction studies

    On the Fly Orchestration of Unikernels: Tuning and Performance Evaluation of Virtual Infrastructure Managers

    Network operators are facing significant challenges meeting the demand for more bandwidth, agile infrastructures, innovative services, while keeping costs low. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Cloud Computing are emerging as key trends of 5G network architectures, providing flexibility, fast instantiation times, support of Commercial Off The Shelf hardware and significant cost savings. NFV leverages Cloud Computing principles to move the data-plane network functions from expensive, closed and proprietary hardware to the so-called Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). In this paper we deal with the management of virtual computing resources (Unikernels) for the execution of VNFs. This functionality is performed by the Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) in the NFV MANagement and Orchestration (MANO) reference architecture. We discuss the instantiation process of virtual resources and propose a generic reference model, starting from the analysis of three open source VIMs, namely OpenStack, Nomad and OpenVIM. We improve the aforementioned VIMs introducing the support for special-purpose Unikernels and aiming at reducing the duration of the instantiation process. We evaluate some performance aspects of the VIMs, considering both stock and tuned versions. The VIM extensions and performance evaluation tools are available under a liberal open source licence

    Disturbance removal in passive radar via sliding extensive cancellation algorithm (ECA-S)

    In this paper an advanced version of the Extensive Cancellation Algorithm (ECA) is proposed for robust disturbance cancellation and target detection in passive radar. Firstly some specific limitations of previous ECA versions are identified when dealing with a highly time-varying disturbance scenario in the presence of slowly moving targets. Specifically, the need to rapidly adapt the filter coefficients is shown to yield undesired effects on low Doppler target echoes, along with the expected partial cancellation. Therefore a sliding version of the ECA is presented which operates on partially overlapped signals batches. The proposed modification to the original ECA is shown to appropriately counteract the limitations above by taking advantage of a smooth estimate of the filter coefficients. The benefits of the proposed approach are demonstrated against experimental data sets accounting for quite different passive radar applications

    Rectal screening of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae: a proposed workflow

    Abstract Objectives Active screening is a crucial element for the prevention of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) transmission in healthcare settings. Here, we proposed a culture-based protocol for rectal swab CPE screening that combines the detection of CPE and the identification of carbapenamase type. Methods The workflow integrates an automatic digital analysis of selective chromogenic media (WASPLab, Copan), with subsequent rapid tests for the confirmation of carbapenemase production (i.e. detection of Klebsiella pneumoniae KPC-specific peak by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry; a multiplex immunochromatographic assay identifying the five commonest carbapenemase types). To in-depth evaluate the performance of this protocol, data about 21 162 rectal swabs submitted for CPE screening at the Microbiology of S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital in Bologna were analyzed. Results Considering its ability to correctly segregate plates with/without Enterobacteriaceae, WASPLab Image Analysis Software showed globally a sensitivity and a specificity of 100% and 79.4%, respectively. Out of the plates with a bacterial growth (n = 901), 76.9% were found positive for CPE by MALDI-TOF (specific KPC-peak for K. pneumoniae) or by the immunochromatographic assay. Only 2.8% of KPC-positive K. pneumoniae strains were missed by the specific MALDI-TOF MS algorithm, being detected by the immunochromatographic assay. The mean turn-around-time needed from the sample arrival to the final report ranged between 18 to 24 hours, with a significant time saving compared to a manual reading. Conclusions This workflow proved to be fast and reliable, being particularly suitable for KPC-K. pneumoniae endemic areas and for high-throughput laboratories

    RDCL 3D, a Model Agnostic Web Framework for the Design and Composition of NFV Services

    We present RDCL 3D, a "model agnostic" web framework for the design and composition of NFV services and components. The framework allows editing and validating the descriptors of services and components both textually and graphically and supports the interaction with external orchestrators or with deployment and execution environments. RDCL 3D is open source and designed with a modular approach, allowing developers to "plug in" the support for new models. We describe several advances with respect to the NFV state of the art, which have been implemented with RDCL 3D. We have integrated in the platform the latest ETSI NFV ISG model specifications for which no parsers/validators were available. We have also included in the platform the support for OASIS TOSCA models, reusing existing parsers. Then we have considered the modelling of components in a modular software router (Click), which goes beyond the traditional scope of NFV. We have further developed this approach by combining traditional NFV components (Virtual Network Functions) and Click elements in a single model. Finally, we have considered the support of this solution using the Unikernels virtualization technology.Comment: Accepted pape

    Influence of defects on silicon heterojunction solar cell efficiency: Physical model and comparison with data

    We have studied the influence of defects on silicon heterojunction solar cell efficiency by a method based on the comparison of electroluminescence (EL) image data with a finite element circuit model of solar cell efficiency. For this purpose, a general curve that relates the solar cell efficiency to a parameter representative of the defect strength, i.e., the loss of VOC, ∆VOC, from EL maps is obtained, and it is shown that the efficiency can be predicted with a good degree of confidence

To fight the problem, improved preventive strategies are mandatory in combination with an innovative health care provision that is driven by research.     Unlocking Access to Enantiopure Fused Uracils by Chemodivergent [4+2] Cross‐Cycloadditions: DFT‐Supported Homo‐Synergistic Organocatalytic Approach

    The discovery of chemical methods enabling the construction of carbocycle‐fused uracils which embody a three‐dimensional and functional‐group‐rich architecture is a useful tool in medicinal chemistry oriented synthesis. In this work, an unprecedented amine‐catalyzed [4+2] cross‐cycloaddition is documented; it involves remotely enolizable 6‐methyluracil‐5‐carbaldehydes and ÎČ‐aryl enals, and chemoselectively produces two novel bicyclic and tricyclic fused uracil chemotypes in good yields with a maximum level of enantiocontrol. In‐depth mechanistic investigations and control experiments support an intriguing homo‐synergistic organocatalytic approach, where the same amine organocatalyst concomitantly engages both aldehyde partners in a stepwise eliminative [4+2] cycloaddition, whose vinylogous iminium ion intermediate product may diverge—depending upon conditions—to either bicyclic targets by hydrolysis or tricyclic products by a second homo‐synergistic trienamine‐mediated stepwise [4+2] cycloaddition
