    Semi-automated mobile television interactive application generation based on XHTML and Java ME

    Mobile Digital TV (MDTV), the hybrid of Digital Television (DTV) and mobile devices (such as mobile phones), has introduced a new way for people to watch DTV and has brought new opportunities for development in the DTV industry. Nowadays, the development of the next generation MDTV service has progressed in terms of both hardware layers and software, with interactive services/applications becoming one of the future MDTV service trends. However, current MDTV interactive services still lack in terms of attracting the consumers and the service creation and implementation process relies too much on commercial solutions, resulting in most parts of the process being proprietary. In addition, this has increased the technical demands for developers as well as has increased substantially the cost of producing and maintaining MDTV services. In light of the aforementioned situation, the Thesis has contributed to this field, by proposing an innovative MDTV service creation and consumption system based on XHTML and Java ME. On the head-end it introduces a semi-automatic creation mechanism to facilitate a less technical and more efficient interactive service creation process. This enables designers and creative individuals to be actively involved in the MDTV service creation process and to develop interactive-rich MDTV service. On the client-end it employs an open-source software environment as the interactive service MDTV consumption platform, rendering the MDTV service implementation process as less proprietary as possible. Furthermore, the Thesis offers a discussion on the different MDTV interactive application models currently used and based on the proposed software, a novel MDTV service presentation method is further introduced and adopted instead of the Rich Media and ECMAScript based methods.     Semi-automatic creation of graphically-rich mobile television services and applications using an XHTML browser and J2ME

    Mobile Digital Television (MDTV) has increasingly become one of the key topics of interest within the DTV industry. This has been particularly successful with regards to the definition and rollout of different content and service distribution standards such as DVB-H, DMB and several others. This is in contrast to the application layer (with regards to middleware and service creation) of the MDTV system, where research and development lags behind. This paper presents work that aims at integrating the service implementation reference, the Application Model (AM), in different MDTV standards by proposing a compatible MDTV service creation process that employs XHTML and Java ME on the service presentation layer; where interactive MDTV services are created using a semi-automated service development tool. With the implementation of this process, this paper aims at developing a universal open-standard environment as an enhancement to the MDTV service development, that on one hand enables more creative and design oriented people with little technical expertise to be involved in the service creation process and on the other hand speeds up the process of creating interactive MDTV services

    Fusing Local Shallow Features and Global Deep Features to Identify Beaks

    Cephalopods are an essential component of marine ecosystems, which are of great significance for the development of marine resources, ecological balance, and human food supply. At the same time, the preservation of cephalopod resources and the promotion of sustainable utilization also require attention. Many studies on the classification of cephalopods focus on the analysis of their beaks. In this study, we propose a feature fusion-based method for the identification of beaks, which uses the convolutional neural network (CNN) model as its basic architecture and a multi-class support vector machine (SVM) for classification. First, two local shallow features are extracted, namely the histogram of the orientation gradient (HOG) and the local binary pattern (LBP), and classified using SVM. Second, multiple CNN models were used for end-to-end learning to identify the beaks, and model performance was compared. Finally, the global deep features of beaks were extracted from the Resnet50 model, fused with the two local shallow features, and classified using SVM. The experimental results demonstrate that the feature fusion model can effectively fuse multiple features to recognize beaks and improve classification accuracy. Among them, the HOG+Resnet50 method has the highest accuracy in recognizing the upper and lower beaks, with 91.88% and 93.63%, respectively.     Iron nanoparticles in combination with other conventional Fe sources remediate mercury toxicity-affected plants and soils by nutrient accumulation in bamboo species

    The issue of mercury (Hg) toxicity has recently been identified as a significant environmental concern, with the potential to impede plant growth in forested and agricultural areas. Conversely, recent reports have indicated that Fe, may play a role in alleviating HM toxicity in plants. Therefore, this study's objective is to examine the potential of iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) and various sources of Fe, particularly iron sulfate (Fe SO4 or Fe S) and iron-ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (Fe - EDTA or Fe C), either individually or in combination, to mitigate the toxic effects of Hg on Pleioblastus pygmaeus. Involved mechanisms in the reduction of Hg toxicity in one-year bamboo species by Fe NPs, and by various Fe sources were introduced by a controlled greenhouse experiment. While 80 mg/L Hg significantly reduced plant growth and biomass (shoot dry weight (36%), root dry weight (31%), and shoot length (31%) and plant tolerance (34%) in comparison with control treatments, 60 mg/L Fe NPs and conventional sources of Fe increased proline accumulation (32%), antioxidant metabolism (21%), polyamines (114%), photosynthetic pigments (59%), as well as root dry weight (25%), and shoot dry weight (22%), and shoot length (22%). Fe NPs, Fe S, and Fe C in plant systems substantially enhanced tolerance to Hg toxicity (23%). This improvement was attributed to increased leaf-relative water content (39%), enhanced nutrient availability (50%), improved antioxidant capacity (34%), and reduced Hg translocation (6%) and accumulation (31%) in plant organs. Applying Fe NPs alone or in conjunction with a mixture of Fe C and Fe S can most efficiently improve bamboo plants' tolerance to Hg toxicity. The highest efficiency in increasing biochemical and physiological indexes under Hg, was related to the treatments of Fe NPs as well as Fe NPs + FeS + FeC. Thus, Fe NPs and other Fe sources might be effective options to remove toxicity from plants and soil. The future perspective may help establish mechanisms to regulate environmental toxicity and human health progressions

    Identifying QTLs for Grain Size in a Colossal Grain Rice (<i>Oryza sativa</i> L.) Line, and Analysis of Additive Effects of QTLs

    Grain size is an important component of quality and harvest traits in the field of rice breeding. Although numerous quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of grain size in rice have been reported, the molecular mechanisms of these QTLs remain poorly understood, and further research on QTL observation and candidate gene identification is warranted. In our research, we developed a suite of F2 intercross populations from a cross of 9311 and CG. These primary populations were used to map QTLs conferring grain size, evaluated across three environments, and then subjected to bulked-segregant analysis-seq (BSA-seq). In total, 4, 11, 12 and 14 QTLs for grain length (GL), grain width (GW), 1000-grain weight (TGW), and length/width ratio (LWR), respectively, were detected on the basis of a single-environment analysis. In particular, over 200 splicing-related sites were identified by whole-genome sequencing, including one splicing-site mutation with G>A at the beginning of intron 4 on Os03g0841800 (qGL3.3), producing a smaller open reading frame, without the third and fourth exons. A previous study revealed that the loss-of-function allele caused by this splicing site can negatively regulate rice grain length. Furthermore, qTGW2.1 and qGW2.3 were new QTLs for grain width. We used the near-isogenic lines (NILs) of these GW QTLs to study their genetic effects on individuals and pyramiding, and found that they have additive effects on GW. In summary, these discoveries provide a valuable genetic resource, which will facilitate further study of the genetic polymorphism of new rice varieties in rice breeding
