A recent rebuilding of most spirals ?

Re-examination of the properties of distant galaxies leads to the evidence that most present-day spirals have built up half of their stellar masses during the last 8 Gyr, mostly during several intense phases of star formation during which they took the appearance of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). Distant galaxy morphologies encompass all of the expected stages of galaxy merging, central core formation and disk growth, while their cores are much bluer than those of present-day bulges. We have tested a spiral rebuilding scenario, for which 75+/-25% of spirals have experienced their last major merger event less than 8 Gyr ago. It accounts for the simultaneous decreases, during that period, of the cosmic star formation density, of the merger rate, of the number densities of LIRGs and of compact galaxies, while the densities of ellipticals and large spirals are essentially unaffected.Comment: (1) GEPI, Obs. Two 5-wk experiments, using a total of 270 pigs (avg initial wt of 16.1 and 13.11b), were conducted to determine the dose-response relationship between Streptococcus faecium additions to drinking water and performance of newly weaned pigs. In experiment 1, treatments were: 1) untreated control; 2, 3, and 4) .5, 2.5, and 4.5 x 109 CFU of S. faecillm/pig/d; 5) antibioticfed positive control (CSP250 and CUS04)\u27 Bacterial content of feces collected from the pigs on d 7, 14, and 21 indicated that antibiotic feeding greatly reduced fecal content of streptococci. S. faecium given in the water (.5, 2.5, or 4.5 x 10 CFU/pig/d) slightly increased the CFU of streptococci in the feces. Giving S. faecillm in the water or antibiotics in the feed did not reduce fecal content of coliform bacteria. Antibiotic feeding improved feed intake, growth rate, and efficiency of gain when compared to the untreated control. Pigs given the highest level of S. faecium addition to the water (i.e., 4.5 x 10^9 had performance that was intermediate to that of the untreated control and positive control. In experiment 2, dosages of S. faecium were spread further apart. Treatments were: 1) untreated negative control; 2,3, and 4) 5 x 107, 5 X 109, and 5 x 1011 CFU of S. faecium/pig/d; and 5) antibiotic-fed positive control. Streptococci content of the feces was increased by giving S. faecillm in the water. However, total coliform content was not affected by giving S. faecium or antibiotics. Antibiotic feeding improved rate of gain, feed intake, and efficiency of gain, but giving S. faecium did not improve performance of pigs compared to those given the untreated control.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 16, 198

A modified layer-removal method for residual stress measurement in electrodeposited nickel films

    Get PDF
Combining the traditional layer-removal method with a cantilever beam model, a modified layer-removal method is developed and used to measure residual stress in single and multi-layer electrodeposited nickel films with thickness of 2.5 μm. The out-of-plane displacement of the free tip of a cantilever beam is measured by the digital speckle correlation method. The results show that residual stress in a single semimat nickel film is compressive, while in a multi-layer system composed of dark, semimat and holophote nickel, residual stress in the surface layer is tensile. Residual stress decreases gradually with the increase of etching depths of single and multi-layer films. These findings are in qualitative agreement with nanoindentation tests, which confirms the reliability of the modified layer-removal method

    Black diholes in five dimensions

Using a generalized Weyl formalism, we show how stationary, axisymmetric solutions of the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation can be turned into static, axisymmetric solutions of five-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to a two-form gauge field. This procedure is then used to obtain new solutions of the latter theory describing pairs of extremal magnetic black holes with opposite charges, known as black diholes. These diholes are kept in static equilibrium by membrane-like conical singularities stretching along two different directions. We also present solutions describing diholes suspended in a background magnetic field, and with unbalanced charges.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures; reference adde

Anisotropic two-dimensional Heisenberg model by Schwinger-boson Gutzwiller projected method

Two-dimensional Heisenberg model with anisotropic couplings in the xx and yy directions (JxJyJ_x \neq J_y) is considered. The model is first solved in the Schwinger-boson mean-field approximation. Then the solution is Gutzwiller projected to satisfy the local constraint that there is only one boson at each site. The energy and spin-spin correlation of the obtained wavefunction are calculated for systems with up to 20×2020 \times 20 sites by means of the variational Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic long-range order remains down to the one-dimensional limit.Comment: 15 pages RevTex3.0, 4 figures, available upon request, GWRVB8-9

Numerical renormalization group study of the 1D t-J model

The one-dimensional (1D) tJt-J model is investigated using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We report for the first time a generalization of the DMRG method to the case of arbitrary band filling and prove a theorem with respect to the reduced density matrix that accelerates the numerical computation. Lastly, using the extended DMRG method, we present the ground state electron momentum distribution, spin and charge correlation functions. The 3kF3k_F anomaly of the momentum distribution function first discussed by Ogata and Shiba is shown to disappear as JJ increases. We also argue that there exists a density-independent JcJ_c beyond which the system becomes an electron solid.Comment: Wrong set of figures were put in the orginal submissio

Luttinger Liquid Instability in the One Dimensional t-J Model

We study the t-J model in one dimension by numerically projecting the true ground state from a Luttinger liquid trial wave function. We find the model exhibits Luttinger liquid behavior for most of the phase diagram in which interaction strength and density are varied. However at small densities and high interaction strengths a new phase with a gap to spin excitations and enhanced superconducting correlations is found. We show this phase is a Luther-Emery liquid and study its correlation functions.Comment: REVTEX, 11 pages. 4 Figures available on request from [email protected]

Serine-385 phosphorylation of inwardly rectifying K(+) channel subunit (Kir6.2) by AMP-dependent protein kinase plays a key role in rosiglitazone-induced closure of the K(ATP) channel and insulin secretion in rats

Rosiglitazone, an insulin sensitiser, not only improves insulin sensitivity but also enhances insulin secretory capacity by ameliorating gluco- and lipotoxicity in beta cells. Rosiglitazone can stimulate insulin secretion at basal and high glucose levels via a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-dependent pathway. We hypothesised that regulation of phosphorylation of the ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channel might serve as a key step in the regulation of insulin secretion. Insulin secretory responses were studied in an isolated pancreas perfusion system, cultured rat islets and MIN6 and RINm5F beta cells. Signal transduction pathways downstream of PI3K were explored to link rosiglitazone to K(ATP) channel conductance with patch clamp techniques and insulin secretion measured by ELISA. Rosiglitazone stimulated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity and induced inhibition of the K(ATP) channel conductance in islet beta cells; both effects were blocked by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Following stimulation of AMPK by 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR), a pharmacological activator, both AICAR-stimulated insulin secretion and inhibition of K(ATP) channel conductance were unaffected by LY294002, indicating that AMPK activation occurs at a site downstream of PI3K activity. The serine residue at amino acid position 385 of Kir6.2 was found to be the substrate phosphorylation site of AMPK when activated by rosiglitazone or AICAR. Our data indicate that PI3K-dependent activation of AMPK is required for rosiglitazone-stimulated insulin secretion in pancreatic beta cells. Phosphorylation of the Ser(385) residue of the Kir6.2 subunit of the K(ATP) channel by AMPK may play a role in insulin secretion

A switchable pH-differential unitized regenerative fuel cell with high performance

    Get PDF
Regenerative fuel cells are a potential candidate for future energy storage, but their applications are limited by the high cost and poor round-trip efficiency. Here we present a switchable pH-differential unitized regenerative fuel cell capable of addressing both the obstacles. Relying on a membraneless laminar flow-based design, pH environments in the cell are optimized independently for different electrode reactions and are switchable together with the cell process to ensure always favorable thermodynamics for each electrode reaction. Benefiting from the thermodynamic advantages of the switchable pH-differential arrangement, the cell allows water electrolysis at a voltage of 0.57 V, and a fuel cell open circuit voltage of 1.89 V, rendering round-trip efficiencies up to 74%. Under room conditions, operating the cell in fuel cell mode yields a power density of 1.3 W cm¯², which is the highest performance to date for laminar flow-based cells and is comparable to state-of-the-art polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells
