Visual adaptation to convexity in macaque area V4
Aftereffects are perceptual illusions caused by visual adaptation to one or more stimulus attribute, such as orientation, motion, or shape. Neurophysiological studies seeking to understand the basis of visual adaptation have observed firing rate reduction and changes in tuning of stimulus-selective neurons following periods of prolonged visual stimulation. In the domain of shape, recent psychophysical work has shown that adaptation to a convex pattern induces a subsequently seen rectangle to appear slightly concave. In the present study, we investigate the possible contribution of V4 neurons of rhesus monkeys, which are thought to be involved in the coding of convexity, to shape-specific adaptation. Visually responsive neurons were monitored during the brief presentation of simple shapes varying in their convexity level. Each test presentation was preceded by either a blank period or several seconds of adaptation to a convex or concave stimulus, presented in two different sizes. Adaptation consistently shifted the tuning of neurons away from the convex or concave adapter, including shifting response to the neutral rectangle in the direction of the opposite convexity. This repulsive shift resembled the known perceptual distortion associated with adaptation to such stimuli. In addition, adaptation caused a nonspecific response decrease, as well as a specific decrease for repeated stimuli. The latter effects were observed whether or not the adapting and test stimuli matched closely in their size. Taken together, these results provide evidence for shape-specific adaptation of neurons in area V4, which may contribute to the perception of the convexity aftereffect
A Visual Query System for the Specification and Scientific Analysis of Continual Queries
The lack of a facility that would allow nonprogrammers to easily formulate temporal ad hoc analyses over a network of heterogeneous, constantly-updated data sources has been a significant impediment to research, particularly in the scientific community. In this paper we describe WebFormulate, an Internet-based system which facilitates the development of analyses using information obtained from databases on the Internet. The main distinction between this system and existing Internet facilities to retrieve information and assimilate it into computations is that WebFormulate provides the necessary facilities to perform continual queries, developing and maintaining dynamic links such that computations and reports automatically maintain themselves. A further distinction is that this system is specifically designed for users of spreadsheet-level ability, rather than professional programmers

Motion-sensitive responses in visual area V4 in the absence of primary visual cortex
Neurons in cortical ventral-stream area V4 are thought to contribute to important aspects of visual processing by integrating information from primary visual cortex (V1). However, how V4 neurons respond to visual stimulation after V1 injury remains unclear: While electrophysiological investigation of V4 neurons during reversible V1 inactivation suggests that virtually all responses are eliminated (Girard et al., 1991), fMRI in humans and monkeys with permanent lesions shows reliable V1-independent activity (Baseler et al., 1999; Goebel et al., 2001; Schmid et al., 2010). To resolve this apparent discrepancy, we longitudinally assessed neuronal functions of macaque area V4 using chronically implanted electrode arrays before and after creating a permanent aspiration lesion in V1. During the month after lesioning, we observed weak yet significant spiking activity in response to stimuli presented to the lesion-affected part of the visual field. These V1-independent responses showed sensitivity for motion and likely reflect the effect of V1-bypassing geniculate input into extrastriate areas
Closed-cycle, low-vibration 4 K cryostat for ion traps and other applications
In-vacuo cryogenic environments are ideal for applications requiring both low
temperatures and extremely low particle densities. This enables reaching long
storage and coherence times for example in ion traps, essential requirements
for experiments with highly charged ions, quantum computation, and optical
clocks. We have developed a novel cryostat continuously refrigerated with a
pulse-tube cryocooler and providing the lowest vibration level reported for
such a closed-cycle system with 1 W cooling power for a <5 K experiment. A
decoupling system suppresses vibrations from the cryocooler by three orders of
magnitude down to a level of 10 nm peak amplitudes in the horizontal plane.
Heat loads of about 40 W (at 45 K) and 1 W (at 4 K) are transferred from an
experimental chamber, mounted on an optical table, to the cryocooler through a
vacuum-insulated massive 120 kg inertial copper pendulum. The 1.4 m long
pendulum allows installation of the cryocooler in a separate, acoustically
isolated machine room. In the laser laboratory, we measured the residual
vibrations using an interferometric setup. The positioning of the 4 K elements
is reproduced to better than a few micrometer after a full thermal cycle to
room temperature. Extreme high vacuum on the mbar level is achieved.
In collaboration with the Max-Planck-Intitut f\"ur Kernphysik (MPIK), such a
setup is now in operation at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)
for a next-generation optical clock experiment using highly charged ions
Stable Aqueous Nanoparticle Film Assemblies with Covalent and Charged Polymer Linking Networks
The construction of highly stable and efficiently assembled multilayer films of purely water soluble gold nanoparticles is reported. Citrate-stabilized nanoparticles (CS-NPs) of average core diameter of 10 nm are used as templates for stabilization-based exchange reactions with thioctic acid to form more robust aqueous NPs that can be assembled into multilayer films. The thioctic acid stabilized nanoparticles (TAS-NPs) are networked via covalent and electrostatic linking systems, employing dithiols and the cationic polymer poly(l-lysine), respectively. Multilayer films of up to 150 nm in thickness are successfully grown at biological pH with no observable degradation of the NPs within the film. The characteristic surface plasmon band, an optical feature of certain NP film assemblies that can be used to report the local environment and core spacing within the film, is preserved. Growth dynamics and film stability in solution and in the air are examined, with poly(l-lysine) linked films showing no evidence of aggregation for at least 50 days. We believe these films represent a pivotal step toward exploring the potential of aqueous NP film assemblies as a sensing apparatus
Coarse grained description of the protein folding
We consider two- and three-dimensional lattice models of proteins which were
characterized previously. We coarse grain their folding dynamics by reducing it
to transitions between effective states. We consider two methods of selection
of the effective states. The first method is based on the steepest descent
mapping of states to underlying local energy minima and the other involves an
additional projection to maximally compact conformations. Both methods generate
connectivity patterns that allow to distinguish between the good and bad
folders. Connectivity graphs corresponding to the folding funnel have few loops
and are thus tree-like. The Arrhenius law for the median folding time of a
16-monomer sequence is established and the corresponding barrier is related to
easily identifiable kinetic trap states.Comment: REVTeX, 9 pages, 15 EPS figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Disorder-induced critical behavior in driven diffusive systems
Using dynamic renormalization group we study the transport in driven
diffusive systems in the presence of quenched random drift velocity with
long-range correlations along the transport direction. In dimensions
we find fixed points representing novel universality classes of
disorder-dominated self-organized criticality, and a continuous phase
transition at a critical variance of disorder. Numerical values of the scaling
exponents characterizing the distributions of relaxation clusters are in good
agreement with the exponents measured in natural river networks
