Alloprof: a new French question-answer education dataset and its use in an information retrieval case study
Teachers and students are increasingly relying on online learning resources
to supplement the ones provided in school. This increase in the breadth and
depth of available resources is a great thing for students, but only provided
they are able to find answers to their queries. Question-answering and
information retrieval systems have benefited from public datasets to train and
evaluate their algorithms, but most of these datasets have been in English text
written by and for adults. We introduce a new public French question-answering
dataset collected from Alloprof, a Quebec-based primary and high-school help
website, containing 29 349 questions and their explanations in a variety of
school subjects from 10 368 students, with more than half of the explanations
containing links to other questions or some of the 2 596 reference pages on the
website. We also present a case study of this dataset in an information
retrieval task. This dataset was collected on the Alloprof public forum, with
all questions verified for their appropriateness and the explanations verified
both for their appropriateness and their relevance to the question. To predict
relevant documents, architectures using pre-trained BERT models were fine-tuned
and evaluated. This dataset will allow researchers to develop
question-answering, information retrieval and other algorithms specifically for
the French speaking education context. Furthermore, the range of language
proficiency, images, mathematical symbols and spelling mistakes will
necessitate algorithms based on a multimodal comprehension. The case study we
present as a baseline shows an approach that relies on recent techniques
provides an acceptable performance level, but more work is necessary before it
can reliably be used and trusted in a production setting
Breakup of diminutive Rayleigh jets
Discharging a liquid from a nozzle at sufficient large velocity leads to a
continuous jet that due to capillary forces breaks up into droplets. Here we
investigate the formation of microdroplets from the breakup of micron-sized
jets with ultra high-speed imaging. The diminutive size of the jet implies a
fast breakup time scale of the
order of 100\,ns{}, and requires imaging at 14 million frames per second. We
directly compare these experiments with a numerical lubrication approximation
model that incorporates inertia, surface tension, and viscosity [Eggers and
Dupont, J. Fluid Mech. 262, 205 (1994); Shi, Brenner, and Nagel, Science 265,
219 (1994)]. The lubrication model allows to efficiently explore the parameter
space to investigate the effect of jet velocity and liquid viscosity on the
formation of satellite droplets. In the phase diagram we identify regions where
the formation of satellite droplets is suppressed. We compare the shape of the
droplet at pinch-off between the lubrication approximation model and a boundary
integral (BI) calculation, showing deviations at the final moment of the
pinch-off. Inspite of this discrepancy, the results on pinch-off times and
droplet and satellite droplet velocity obtained from the lubrication
approximation agree with the high-speed imaging results
Coherent combining of mid-infrared difference frequency generators
International audienceWe report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental demonstration of coherent combining of two mid-infrared difference frequency generators by active phase control in continuous-wave regime. Using the phase relation that is inherent to the nonlinear process, we are able to phase-lock and combine the idler waves by the sole phase control of one of the pump waves. This control is done by an all fiber electro-optic modulator. Combining is achieved with an excellent efficiency with a residual phase error of λ/28

Aortic valve replacement due to granulomatosis with polyangiitis : a case series
Background Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a systemic inflammatory process predominantly affecting upper and lower respiratory tract and kidneys. Valvular heart disease is a rare manifestation of GPA.
Case summary We report two cases of acute valvular heart disease mimicking acute endocarditis caused by GPA. Both patients were middle-aged females with acute aortic valve regurgitation suggestive of possible infective endocarditis. In their recent medical history, atypical otitis and sinusitis were noted. The first patient was admitted with heart failure and the second patient because of persisting fever. Echocardiogram revealed severe aortic regurgitation with an additional structure on two cusps, suggestive of infective endocarditis in both patients. Urgent surgical replacement was performed; however, intraoperative findings did not show infective endocarditis, but severe inflammatory changes of the valve and surrounding tissue. In both patients, the valve was replaced by a prosthetic valve. Microscopic examination of the valve/myocardial biopsy showed diffuse acute and chronic inflammation with necrosis and necrotizing granulomas, compatible with GPA after infectious causes were excluded. Disease remission was obtained in both patients, in one patient with Rituximab and in the other with Glucocorticoids and Cyclophosphamide. Both had an uneventful follow-up.
Discussion Granulomatosis with polyangiitis can be a rare cause of acute aortic valve regurgitation mimicking infective endocarditis with the need for surgical valve replacement. Atypical ear, nose, and throat symptoms can be a first sign of GPA. Symptom recognition is important for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent further progression of the disease
Small RNAs reveal two target sites of the RNA-maturation factor Mbb1 in the chloroplast of Chlamydomonas
Many chloroplast transcripts are protected against exonucleolytic degradation by RNA-binding proteins. Such interactions can lead to the accumulation of short RNAs (sRNAs) that represent footprints of the protein partner. By mining existing data sets of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii small RNAs, we identify chloroplast sRNAs. Two of these correspond to the 5âČ-ends of the mature psbB and psbH messenger RNAs (mRNAs), which are both stabilized by the nucleus-encoded protein Mbb1, a member of the tetratricopeptide repeat family. Accordingly, we find that the two sRNAs are absent from the mbb1 mutant. Using chloroplast transformation and site-directed mutagenesis to survey the psbB 5âČ UTR, we identify a cis-acting element that is essential for mRNA accumulation. This sequence is also found in the 5âČ UTR of psbH, where it plays a role in RNA processing. The two sRNAs are centered on these cis-acting elements. Furthermore, RNA binding assays in vitro show that Mbb1 associates with the two elements specifically. Taken together, our data identify a conserved cis-acting element at the extremity of the psbH and psbB 5âČ UTRs that plays a role in the processing and stability of the respective mRNAs through interactions with the tetratricopeptide repeat protein Mbb1 and leads to the accumulation of protected sRNA
