Language Improvement One Week After Thrombolysis in Acute Stroke

OBJECTIVES: Language recovery following acute stroke is difficult to predict due to several evaluation factors and time constraints. We aimed to investigate the predictors of aphasia recovery and to identify the National Institute of Health and Stroke Scale (NIHSS) items that best reflect linguistic performance, 1 week after thrombolysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved data from a prospective registry of patients with aphasia secondary to left middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis. Complete recovery at day 7 (D7) was measured in a composite verbal score (CVS) (Σ Language+Questions+Commands NIHSS scores). Lesion size was categorized by the Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score (ASPECTS) and vascular patency by ultrasound. CVS was correlated with standardized aphasia testing if both were performed within a two-day interval. RESULTS: Of 228 patients included (age average 67.32 years, 131 men), 72% presented some language improvement that was complete in 31%. Total recovery was predicted by ASPECTS (OR=1.65; 95% CI, 1.295-2.108; P < 0.00) and baseline aphasia severity (OR=0.439; 95% CI, 0.242-0.796; P < 0.007). CVS correlated better with standardized aphasia measures (aphasia quotient, severity, comprehension) than NIHSS_Language item. CONCLUSIONS: Lesion size and initial aphasia severity are the main predictors of aphasia recovery one week after thrombolysis. A NIHSS composite verbal score seems to capture the global linguistic performance better than the language item alone.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Determination of meloxicam in human plasma administrated with four drugs by LC method: application to a pilot bioavailability study

The development and validation of a simple and accurate method by HPLC-UV to quantify meloxicam (MLX) in human plasma and its application to comparative bioavailability study between MLX formulation and manipulated meloxicam + prednisone + cyclobenzaprine + diacerein + hidroxychloroquine is described. MLX and the internal standard (piroxicam) were extracted from plasma using protein precipitation. Chromatographic separation of meloxicam, piroxicam, other active ingredients, diacerein metabolite (Rhein) and plasma interferents was achieved with a C18 column, using a mobile phase of 20 mM sodium Hydrogen pH 3.0 and acetonitrile, with detection at 360 nm and retention times of 4.7, 3.7 and 4.1 min, respectively. The method was linear over the concentration range of 50 to 3000 ng/mL, meloxicam and piroxicam had an average recovery from plasma of 96 and 97 %, respectively. The precision and accuracy (intra-, inter-day) were less than 6 %. The method was successfully applied to a pilot pharmacokinetic study.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire

Bioactive Compounds as Potential Agents for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Management: A Review to Explore Molecular Mechanisms of Action

    Get PDF
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are produced by pathogens like bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses, and may generate severe health problems such as cancer, ulcers, and even problems in the newborn. This narrative review aims to present updated information about the use of natural bioactive compounds for the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections. A search of the literature was performed using databases and search engines such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Science Direct. From the pharmacotherapeutic management point of view, any strategies for prevention should contain medical approaches. The bioactive compounds obtained from natural products have shown biological effects against different microorganisms for the treatment of these diseases. The main results showed antimicrobial, antiprotozoal, antifungal and antiviral effects such as HIV. Also, the molecular mechanisms, signalling pathways and action targets of natural compounds were highlighted, thus justifying bacterial and antifungal inhibition, apoptosis or reduction of viral replication. From the data of our study, we can conclude that natural compounds may be a significant source for adjuvant drugs / complementary therapies in the treatment of STDs. With all these benefits, the future must conduct extensive clinical trials and the development of pharmaceutical nanotechnologies for a greater therapeutic effect. This work was supported by CONICYT PIA/APOYO CCTE AFB170007. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of young Swietenia macrophylla plants grown in Yellow Oxisol submitted to different liming and boron doses. Experimental design was completely randomized in factorial arrangement (|4x4|+1), with additional treatment (control), being 4 liming levels (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 t ha-1) combined with 4 boron levels (1, 2, 3 and 4 mg kg-1 of substrate). Parameters evaluated were plant height, stem diameter, stem dry matter, aerial part dry matter, root dry matter and aerial part dry matter/root dry matter ratio. The height of young Swietenia macrophylla plants was not influenced by liming and boron levels. Maximum yields of leaves and aerial part were obtained with doses of 1.57 and 1.44 t ha-1 of liming, respectively. The increase of boron levels negatively influenced the production of root dry matter. For the diameter and dry matter of stem and root significant interaction between liming and boron levels were observed. The better results linked to development of young Swietenia macrophylla plants were found at a dose of 1.5 t ha-1 of liming and 1.0 mg kg-1 of boron

Avaliação de serviços em saúde mental no Brasil: revisão sistemática da literatura

    Get PDF
