New morphological and molecular data reveal an important underestimation of species diversity and indicate evolutionary patterns in European Lepidocyrtus

The correct identification of morphological species is a key task for species richness estimation of any ecosystem. Although body colour is a widely used character identifying European Lepidocyrtus species, recent investigations using molecular data have revealed that species delineation using body colour can result in an underestimation of real species diversity because of the presence of cryptic species. Lepidocyrtus violaceus is a European species characterised by its dark violet body colour. Its wide distribution leads us to suspect that several cryptic species can be present within this morphospecies. Since traditional morphological characters have appeared insufficient for real diversity identification in Lepidocyrtus, new morphological characters were needed in order to describe the cryptic diversity detected by molecular data in this genus. Pseudopores are integumentary structures present in all Lepidocyrtus species, but the distribution of these structures has not been properly described in the genus, as well as in Entomobryioidea overall. In the present work we aimed to analyse whether L. violaceus is a monophyletic entity in Europe. Moreover, we aimed to determine if the position and number of pseudopores on the different parts of the body and appendages is a phylogenetically useful character in the identification of the species or superspecific entities. Fourteen populations of L. violaceus from five European countries, and another 25 Lepidocyrtus species from nine European countries have been studied. In total, 208 specimens have been analysed morphologically and half of them were studied molecularly using sequences of the genes COXII and EF-1α. Molecular data revealed that the widely distributed Lepidocyrtus violaceus morphospecies is a polyphyletic entity in Europe. Between 6 and 12 diferent cryptic species have been detected within this European morphospecies, and only the presence of pseudopores on the basal plate of the fourth abdominal segment has been found to be a promising diagnostic character between them. A common basal pattern of pseudopore distribution has been recognised in the European members of the genus, and also a diferential pattern within each European species group. As a general trend, an increase in the number of pseudopores has been detected from the most basal to the most derived species groups in the phylogeny of the genus in Europe

The Caldas Department has a rich natural environment, diversity of altitudes above sea level, climates and landscape that provide the region with abundant biotic resources. The presence of Central and Western Andean ranges determines the distribution of water that flows into the two main hydrographic drainages of the department, the Magdalena River basin and the basin of the Cauca River. Based on published studies the ichthyological department drew up for the first time, a list of fish species present in the Department of Caldas. This extensive literature review includes studies of the drainages found in all of the 27 counties of Caldas. This list recorded 133 species, 28 families and nine orders, of which 18 species are classified as endangered or threatened , 11 species are endemic to Colombia, and one new species is recorded for the country. Also listed are 17 species of fish used in pisciculture and 14 introduced species. It is possible that as research of fish resources progresses in the region, the inventory will significantly increase. It is hoped that this study will serve as a starting point for taxonomic, ecological and conservation of the fish fauna of the department

AbstractThe introduction of fish species has been considered as one of the most difficult issues of biodiversity conservation since the degradation of natural ecosystems which has been occurring all around the world has caused that non- native species establish themselves and easily become invaders. Objective: Because of the importance of introducing fish species and their role in native species, a bibliographic review was carried out in which the reader gets introduced to the concept of introduction of species, some aspects of introduction of non- native fish species, describing the current knowledge about the introduced species of fish in Colombia, and finally, the present state of the knowledge of introduced species in the fluvial ecosystems of the department of Caldas is determined. Methodology: A summary of information based on articles, books and technical reports dealing with the introduction of fish in the department of Caldas was carried out. Results: Eighteen species were registered as introduced in natural water as invaders and 72 were registered as introduced in artificial water tanks (aquariums and ponds). From the total of non- native species, 33 belong to the Perciformes order, 12 to Cypriniformes order, 8 species to Characiformes order and 8 species to Cyprinodontiformes order. The families with the greatest number of non-native species are: Cichlidae (24 species), Cyprinidae (12 species) and Poeciliidae (8 species). Conclusions: the permanence of these species in the department of Caldas can trigger effects in the fluvial ecosystems, reason why it is necessary to apply preventive regulations in order to carry out introduction of species in this region. What Emotions do Pre-university Students Feel when Engaged in Computational Thinking Activities?

    Get PDF
Emotions affect how we acquire knowledge, being one of the causes of the demotivation generated at the time of studying a new field. Computer Science does not always pique the interest of young people, so we carry out an analysis of emotions that are present in primary and secondary school students, around 8-9 years old and 12-13 years old, who engage in Computational Thinking activities, considering the educational level, gender, and type of intervention, to understand why this lack of interest. The sessions were based on 1 hour of face-to-face class in which activities related to Computational Thinking were carried out. The instrument used to measure emotions was the Developmental Channels Questionnaire which includes 13 different emotions that students must answer using the Likert scale from 0 to 10. The emotions felt have been mostly positive and ambiguous, while negative emotions have a low intensity, particularly in primary education. Regarding the educational level, there are differences between girls and boys only in the secondary education, while in the primary they are no significant. Also, girls show an evolution when carrying out this type of activity, while boys do not change
