Worldmaking Spenser: Explorations in the Early Modern Age

Worldmaking Spenser reexamines the role of Spenser\u27s work in English history and highlights the richness and complexity of his understanding of place. The volume centers on the idea that complex and allusive literary works such as The Faerie Queene must be read in the context of the cultural, literary, political, economic, and ideological forces at play in the highly allegorical poem. The authors define Spenser as the maker of poetic worlds, of the Elizabethan world, and of the modern world. The essays look at Spenser from three distinct vantage points. The contributors explore his literary origins in classical, medieval, and Renaissance continental writings and his influences on sixteenth-century culture. Spenser also had a great impact on later literary figures, including Lady Mary Wroth and Aemilia Lanyer, two of the seventeenth century\u27s most important writers. The authors address the full range of Spenser\u27s work, both long and short poetry as well as prose. The essays unequivocally demonstrate that Spenser occupies a substantial place in a seminal era in English history and European culture. Faint dwarf galaxies in the Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey

The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) is a CFHT Large Program that is using the wide field of view capabilities of the MegaCam camera to map the entire Virgo Cluster from its core to virial radius. The observing strategy has been optimized to detect very low surface brightness structures in the cluster, including intracluster stellar streams and faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Playing the Game of Health: Best Practices for Health Optimization Program in a Worksite Setting, with Case Study of a Real World Example

While there have been multiple efforts to improve the health of the population, and simultaneously reducing the cost of healthcare and improving the quality of care, there is no single model for improving population health. Worksite health is a microcosm of the health of the nation and the results of been mixed. This paper considers the best practices associated with key worksite health. These best practices include the type of worksite intervention, attention to health literacy, engagement, onsite clinics, coaching and care plans, a digital platform, social support, population health, performance excellence, performance improvement, and an evaluation strategy. While each best practice is considered important, very few programs provide all of the components, and most emphasize one component over the other. A gap in the literature, therefore, is how these best practices can be combined into a single program. Following the review of literature of best practices, a case study, of the program design, of a comprehensive worksite program was conducted to demonstrate how these best practices are operationalized. The Game of Health, is a cognitive based program that focuses on stress management and behavior change in a program that provides onsite programs, a medical clinic, and a digital platform

‘County lines’: racism, safeguarding and statecraft in Britain

Government policies relating to dealers in ‘county lines’ drugs trafficking cases have been welcomed as a departure from punitive approaches to drugs and ‘gang’ policing, in that those on the bottom rung of the drugs economy of heroin and crack cocaine are no longer treated as criminals but as potential victims and ‘modern slaves’ in need of protection. However, our research suggests not so much a radical break with previous modes of policing as that the term ‘county lines’ emerged as a logical extension of the government’s racist and classist language surrounding ‘gangs’, knife crime and youth violence. Policies implemented in the name of safeguarding the vulnerable also act as a gateway for criminalisation not just under drugs laws but also modern slavery legislation. The government’s discovery of, and responses to, ‘county lines’ hinge on a moral crisis in the making, which ultimately deepens the state’s pre-emptive and violent criminalisation of the ‘Black criminal other’ at a time of deep political crisis

Neural Network Interactions Modulate CRY-Dependent Photoresponses in Drosophila

Light is one of the chief environmental cues that reset circadian clocks. In Drosophila, CRYPTOCHROME (CRY) mediates acute photic resetting of circadian clocks by promoting the degradation of TIMELESS in a cell-autonomous manner. Thus, even circadian oscillators in peripheral organs can independently perceive light in Drosophila However, there is substantial evidence for nonautonomous mechanisms of circadian photoreception in the brain. We have previously shown that the morning (M) and evening (E) oscillators are critical light-sensing neurons that cooperate to shift the phase of circadian behavior in response to light input. We show here that light can efficiently phase delay or phase advance circadian locomotor behavior in male Drosophila even when either the M- or the E-oscillators are ablated, suggesting that behavioral phase shifts and their directionality are largely a consequence of the cell-autonomous nature of CRY-dependent photoreception. Our observation that the phase response curves of brain and peripheral oscillators are remarkably similar further supports this idea. Nevertheless, the neural network modulates circadian photoresponses. We show that the M-oscillator neurotransmitter pigment dispersing factor plays a critical role in the coordination between M- and E-oscillators after light exposure, and we uncover a potential role for a subset of dorsal neurons in the control of phase advances. Thus, neural modulation of autonomous light detection might play an important role in the plasticity of circadian behavior.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Input pathways provide circadian rhythms with the flexibility needed to harmonize their phase with environmental cycles. Light is the chief environmental cue that synchronizes circadian clocks. In Drosophila, the photoreceptor CRYPTOCHROME resets circadian clocks cell-autonomously. However, recent studies indicate that, in the brain, interactions between clock neurons are critical to reset circadian locomotor behavior. We present evidence supporting the idea that the ability of flies to advance or delay their rhythmic behavior in response to light input essentially results from cell-autonomous photoreception. However, because of their networked organization, we find that circadian neurons have to cooperate to reset the phase of circadian behavior in response to photic cues. Our work thus helps to reconcile cell-autonomous and non-cell-autonomous models of circadian entrainment

Divergent Pathways: How Pre-Orientation Programs Can Shape the Transition to College for First-Generation, Low-Income Students

First-generation, low-income (FGLI) students attend college at historically high rates in the United States. However, FGLI students continue to struggle in transitioning to college, particularly in elite universities. In this article, we engage with interview and supplemental survey data from 40 FGLI students at an elite university to demonstrate how self-advocacy skills—conceptualized as a form of cultural capital—can support FGLI students' transition into college. We do this through the case of pre-orientation programs, which are increasingly offered across universities, where half of the sample participated in pre-orientation and half did not. We interviewed both subsets at the start of their first academic year, as well as during their COVID-19-induced departure from campus residences. In response, we argue that students who participated in pre-orientation more often demonstrate self-advocacy skills, both in-person and online, especially in comparison with those who did not participate. We show that forming relationships with peers, as well as faculty and staff, during pre-orientation is key to enacting self-advocacy. Lastly, we also respond to previous studies that typically associate self-advocacy skills with the cultural competencies of higher-income and continuing-generation students, while making clear how these skills can benefit FGLI students in transitioning into school
