Introduction:The Sites, Materialities and Practices of Interreligious Encounters in Europe

    Get PDF
This introduction asks about the multiple forms, power effects, fragility and contested nature of interreligious encounters in Europe from various social science perspectives. With ‘interreligious dialogue’ initiatives being promoted in many societies, research on the topic has expanded. Attention has been devoted to dialogue as a tool to promote social cohesion and integration in societies marked by migration-driven religious diversity. However, research on the intertwined effects of the sites, materialities and practices of ‘the interreligious’ is scarce, especially with regard to the production and contentious transformation of identities, mechanisms of belonging and power relations in local contexts. To address this gap, the contributions to Interreligious Encounters in Europe: Sites, Materialities and Practices focus on the situated articulations of interreligious encounters and dialogues by examining how different encounters are framed, expressed and practised. Drawing on 9 empirical case studies from various countries, the contributions (a) shed light on the subjectivities, relations and modes of behaviour produced, negotiated and contested in and through locally embedded interreligious encounters and dialogue-oriented practices; (b) observe the power dynamics that shape those practices and encounters; and (c) discuss their implications for the place(s) of religion in the public sphere. The volume provides insights into the commonalities and specificities of interreligious encounters, politics and practices across different settings

    Afterword

As an afterword to the volume Interreligious Encounters in Europe: Sites, Materialities and Practices, this chapter highlights two main take-away messages from the contributions of the book: the productivity of interreligious encounters, and the power relations and power effects of the practices and politics of interreligious encounters and dialogues. The practices and politics of interreligious encounters and dialogues often display both hopeful movements towards overcoming differences and exclusion and a (re-)production of power inequalities. The afterword reflects on these tensions and identifies paths for future research

Newly Standing Infants Increase Postural Stability When Performing a Supra-Postural Task.

Independent stance is one of the most difficult motor milestones to achieve. Newly standing infants exhibit exaggerated body movements and can only stand for a brief amount of time. Given the difficult nature of bipedal stance, these unstable characteristics are slow to improve. However, we demonstrate that infants can increase their stability when engaged in a standing goal-directed task. Infants\u27 balance was measured while standing and while standing and holding a visually attractive toy. When holding the toy, infants stood for a longer period of time, exhibited less body sway, and more mature postural dynamics. These results demonstrate that even with limited standing experience, infants can stabilize posture to facilitate performance of a concurrent task

Hypoxia-Adaptation Involves Mitochondrial Metabolic Depression and Decreased ROS Leakage

    Get PDF
Through long-term laboratory selection, we have generated a Drosophila melanogaster population that tolerates severe, normally lethal, level of hypoxia. This strain lives perpetually under severe hypoxic conditions (4% O2). In order to shed light on the mechanisms involved in this adaptation, we studied the respiratory function of isolated mitochondria from the thorax of hypoxia-adapted flies (AF) using polarographic oxygen consumption while monitoring superoxide generation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. AF mitochondria exhibited a significant 30% decrease in respiratory rate during state 3, while enhancing the resting respiratory rate during State 4-oligo by 220%. The activity of individual electron transport complexes I, II and III were 107%, 65%, and 120% in AF mitochondria as compared to those isolated from control flies. The sharp decrease in complex II activity and modest increase in complexes I and III resulted in >60% reduction in superoxide leakage from AF mitochondria during both NAD+-linked state 3 and State 4-oligo respirations. These results provide evidence that flies with mitochondria exhibiting decreased succinate dehydrogenase activity and reduced superoxide leakage give flies an advantage for survival in long-term hypoxia

The round table commemorating the thirtieth anniversary of the BrazilianAssociation of Irish Studies (ABEI) and tenth year of the W.B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies was part of the XIV ABEI and II AEIS Symposium of Irish Studies - “The State of the Art: Local and Global Contexts in Dialogue”, and was held on August 15, 2019. The session was comprised by Dr Munira H. Mutran, honorary president of ABEI and director of the W.B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies; Dr Laura P.Z. de Izarra, coordinator of the W.B. Yeats Chair and advisory member of ABEI; Dr Rosalie R. Haddad, advisory member of ABEI and researcher in the W.B. Yeats Chair, Alessandra Cristina Rigonato, PhD candidate at the University ofSão Paulo, and Eduardo Kumamoto, graduate from the University of São Paulo and Master in Literary Translation at Trinity College Dublin. The discussion, which revolved around the history of the founding of both ABEI and the Chair, and their current developments, was conducted by Dr Mariana Bolfarine, head of ABEI and researcher at the W.B. Yeats Chair of Irish Studies

Análise Comparativa de Métodos para Esteganografia Digital em Imagens

Sensitive information being shared on the internet is growing. Becauseof this, it is increasingly necessary to take security measureswhilst this information travels in the network. Digital steganographyallows one to send sensitive information in a hidden manner.Although there is a plethora of techniques for such a goal, findingan appropriate one is not always simple. This paper implementsand compares spatial-domain digital steganography techniques inboth RGB and grayscale images. A frequency-domain heuristic forreducing the visual impact of digital steganography in grayscaleimages is presented. As another result of this work, a dataset is alsoavailable in the Kaggle platform with 18 GB of images, containingsecret messages using the techniques under study. In addition, aPython language library was also made available in the PyPI repository, allowing for both concealment and revelation of messagesusing the presented digital steganography methods
