Achievement Motivation and Achievement: The Role of Locus of Control

    Get PDF
The status of locus of control as a moderator of the relation of resultant achievement motivation to achievement was investigated for a sample of females. Locus of control was found to moderate resultant achievement motivation in predicting academic achievement for females. The conclusions to be drawn from these data are not clear since the sample of females was predominantly internal in beliefs about the control of reinforcement. The implications of the definition of internality/externality for future research on this question are discussed

Ohio’s College Credit Plus Program: Participants’ First-Year College Performance

    Get PDF
This exploratory study assessed the relationship between participation in Ohio’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program and subsequent first-year GPA following college or university matriculation. Positive correlations were found between first-year cumulative GPA and all three dimensions of the CCP program assessed: credit hours completed, number of general education courses taken, and number of career pathway courses taken. Regression analysis found general education courses accounted for more variance in first-year GPA than career path courses, although the Fischer’s Z-test for an interaction effect was not significant. Interpretation of results emphasizes the need for comparative and longitudinal follow-up studies to establish causality

Connecting Print and Electronic Titles: An Integrated Approach at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

    Get PDF
Libraries make heavy investments in electronic resources, with many of these resources reflecting title changes, bundled subsets, or content changes of formerly print material. These changes can distance the electronic format from its print origins, creating discovery and access issues. A task force was formed to explore the enhancement of catalog records to increase the connections between print and electronic titles, thus improving patron discovery and access to electronic resources. The investigation considered the relationships between parent and dependent titles, title changes, and publication subsets. The resulting recommendations included interdepartmental cooperation, record-display best practices, and methods for tracking catalog-record enhancements

Endogenous ROS Levels in C. Elegans Under Exogenous Stress Support Revision of Oxidative Stress Theory of Life-History Tradeoffs

Background: The oxidative stress theory of life-history tradeoffs states that oxidative stress caused by damaging free radicals directly underpins tradeoffs between reproduction and longevity by altering the allocation of energetic resources between these tasks. We test this theory by characterizing the effects of exogenous oxidative insult and its interaction with thermal stress and diet quality on a suite of life-history traits and correlations in Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes. We also quantify demographic aging rates and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in live animals. Results: Our findings indicate a tradeoff between investment in reproduction and antioxidant defense (somatic maintenance) consistent with theoretical predictions, but correlations between standard life-history traits yield little evidence that oxidative stress generates strict tradeoffs. Increasing oxidative insult, however, shows a strong tendency to uncouple positive phenotypic correlations and, in particular, to reduce the correlation between reproduction and lifespan. We also found that mild oxidative insult results in lower levels of endogenous ROS accompanied by hormetic changes in lifespan, demographic aging, and reproduction that disappear in combined-stress treatments–consistent with the oxidative stress theory of aging. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that oxidative stress is a direct contributor to life-history trait variation and that traditional tradeoffs are not necessary to invoke oxidative stress as a mediator of relationships between life-history traits, supporting previous calls for revisions to theory
