Complete sets of elastic constants and photoelastic coefficients of pure and MgO-doped lithium niobate crystals at room temperature

This paper presents the results of ultrasonic measurements of LiNbO3 and LiNbO3:MgO crystals. The tensors of piezoelectric coefficients, elastic stiffness constants, and elastic compliances are determined for both crystals at room temperature. Combining these data with the results of piezo-optical measurements, a complete set of photoelastic tensor coefficients is also calculated. Doping of LiNbO3 crystals by MgO does not lead to a considerable modification of their elastic and photoelastic properties. However, LiNbO3:MgO is characterized by a considerably higher resistance with respect to powerful light radiation, making it promising for future application in acousto-optic devices that deal with superpowerful laser radiation. Presented here are the complete tensor sets of elastic constants and photoelastic coefficients of LiNbO3 and LiNbO3:MgO crystals that may be used for a geometry optimization of acousto-optical interaction providing the best diffraction efficiency of acousto-optical cells made of these materials

The intramolecular Diels-Alder vinylthiophen (IMDAV) reaction: An easy approach to thieno[2,3-f]isoindole-4-carboxylic acids

The reaction of readily accessible 3-(thien-2-yl)allylamines with maleic anhydride, followed by a domino sequence involving successive acylation/[4+2] cycloaddition steps, leads to the formation of the thieno[2,3-f]isoindole core. The key step, the intramolecular Diels-Alder vinylaren (IMDAV) reaction, proceeds with high level of diastereoselectivity and with formation of a single diastereoisomer of the target product 4,4a,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-3aH-thieno[2,3-f]isoindole-4-carboxylic acids in excellent yields. If the reaction is carried out at room temperature, it occurs in 2–3 days and the proton migration (H-shift) does not take place at the last stage. In boiling benzene, the reaction is complete after three hours, but in this case a slight impurity of byproducts bearing aromatic thiophene ring – 4a,5,6,7,7a,8-hexahydro-4H-thieno[2,3-f]isoindole-4-carboxylic acids is formed. © 2017 Elsevier Lt

Identifying Barriers to Accrual in Radiation Oncology Randomized Trials

    No full text
Background: Data about factors driving accrual to radiation oncology trials are limited. In oncology, 30%–40% of trials are considered unsuccessful, many because of poor accrual. The goal of the present study was to inform the design of future trials by evaluating the effects of institutional, clinician, and patient factors on accrual rates to a randomized radiation oncology trial. Methods: Investigators participating in sabr-comet (NCT01446744), a randomized phase ii trial open in Canada, Europe, and Australia that is evaluating the role of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (sabr) in oligometastatic disease, were invited to complete a survey about factors affecting accrual. Institutional ethics approval was obtained. The primary endpoint was the annual accrual rate per institution. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to identify factors predictive of annual accrual rates. Results: On univariable linear regression analysis, off-trial availability of sabr (p = 0.014) and equipoise of the referring physician (p = 0.014) were found to be predictive of annual accrual rates. The annual accrual rates were lower when centres offered sabr for oligometastases off-trial (median: 3.7 patients vs. 8.4 patients enrolled) and when referring physicians felt that, compared with having equipoise, sabr was beneficial (median: 4.8 patients vs. 8.4 patients enrolled). Multivariable analysis identified perceived level of equipoise of the referring physician to be predictive of the annual accrual rate (p = 0.023). Conclusions: The level of equipoise of referring physicians might play a key role in accrual to radiation oncology randomized controlled trials. Efforts to communicate with and educate referring physicians might therefore be beneficial for improving trial accrual rates
