Ontology of Strategic Information Systems Planning

    Get PDF
Strategically planning and aligning information systems is still one the most challenging IT tasks for organizations. Literature has contributed to describe and analyze the phenomena labeling the process of Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP) as the one that pursues the alignment of the IS/IT initiatives to achieve business goals. Statistics reveal, however, that those goals are significantly not being achieved, leaving the discussion open to know whether the SISP models, frameworks and methods are correct, complete, applicable, feasible or not. In order to understand and visualize the potential gaps and biases in the SISP literature, the paper introduces an ontology of the SISP process that allows systematically and symmetrically expand study to contribute to maturation of the scientific field as well as to identify the critical omissions within it. Later, the ontological analysis will allow the visualization of bright, light, and blind/blank areas of knowledge documented on SISP

The Knowledge Body of Requirement Engineering in IST Innovations: An Ontological Analysis

    Get PDF
Requirement Engineering is considered a key factor for Information Systems and Technology (IST) success in innovation. After roughly 40 years, important questions about the impact of RE in innovations remains. Literature review and bibliometric reports are well-known techniques for describing the state of the art; however, both can cover what has been done, but fail to identify the less developed areas. An alternative method is used to describe the whole knowledge body of RE (KBoRE) for IST innovations, and then systematically identify the most, less and uncovered areas. This paper proposes an Ontological framework of the KBoRE for IST innovations, by decomposing it through the identification of taxonomies and concepts that represent the field. Then, we apply the ontology to map articles from SCOPUS and WoS databases. Results reveal emphases that help to design research agendas and feed the KBoRE for IST Innovations to fill the gaps between the academic curiosity and the industry progress

Role of Information Systems in Organizational Agility: The case of eClasSkeduler at Universidad de Chile

    Get PDF
Organizations need to exhibit characteristics of agility in order to stay ahead of their competitors, and to even survive in dynamic environments. One major concern for organizations is how to develop and implement Information Systems (IS) for their agility. However, IS are mostly regarded as a black-box related to organizational functions and structures. For this reason, organizations tend to overly spend their resources to change whole IS instead of one component that causes problems, or even making a good diagnosis. In this paper, we provide a way to open the IS black-box with a case study. The case is about how the department of Management Control and Information Systems at Universidad de Chile improves its organizational agility with a course scheduling system, eClasSkeduler. The case analysis illustrates not only how the organization improves its agility through eClasSkeduler but also how this information system is related to organizational functions in agility

    CIO Performance Measurement

    Get PDF
Over the last decades, the academy and the community of practice have described the differences in CIO profiles recognizing that the challenges posed by the technological development and the evolution of business models require a wide array of abilities and skills that not always match companies and individuals. If the classic idea of ‘what you measure is what you get’ is also true in IT, then a possible explanation of the misalignments of IS/IT units may lie in the wrong measurement of the expected performances and results of CIOs. This conceptual article explores and describes the effects of performance management and analyzes how it could affect the performance of the CIO

The evolution of the CIO profile: Evidence in Chile

    Get PDF
The great and dynamic possibilities offered by the information technologies (IT) impose new challenges to the organizations. The new capabilities of IT demand that the skills and abilities of the people in charge of the technological management evolve accordingly. In this context we are intrigued by what is the evolution of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) that endows him/her with the capacity to face such challenges? Are there patterns in the evolution of the CIO profile? To answer these questions we integrated the definitions in the literature for the ideal CIO profile with the academic programs of prestigious universities in a conceptual map. Then we interviewed 26 CIOs working in Chile to contrast their profiles with the conceptual map. From the literature review we found several prescriptive features regarding the profile and role of the CIO in modern organizations. Differences were found between the ideal role and the evolutionary status of Chilean CIOs. In spite of the differences, we found patterns for the evolution of the profile that allowed us to propose hypotheses and recommendations for the evolution of Chilean CIOs. Finally, we believe that this paper offers a powerful diagnose of the CIO profile to be used by organizations, IT professionals and universities to set professional and academic paths for success in the IT leading position

Most influential journals and authors in digital business research: A bibliometric analysis

    Get PDF
In the last few decades many firms have been making large investments in e-commerce applications, digital technologies or the use of the Internet in several business activities and processes, giving rise to the notions of digital business and digital economy. Consequently, the number of academic articles on digital business has grown exponentially. The aim of this study is to present the evolution of academic research in digital business between 1990 and 2015. The main contribution is to provide an overview of the current academic state of the art in digital business research. The analysis focuses on identifying the most productive and influential journals in digital business research, as well as the leading authors in the field. The results show a strong increase in digital business research during the last fifteen years due to the development of a good number of specialized journals of information systems. We suggest that the field of business research should expand beyond its traditional boundaries and embrace a more multidisciplinary perspective

Self-management and public policies in Argentina: advances and challenges on the agenda in the post-convertibility

With this framework, our goal is to analyze the practices of self-management in Argentina today, on: a) fundamentals of SSE and state policies, b) effective challenge to the employer-employee relationship, c) feasibility of participatory and democratic standards in the management of enterprises, and d) socio-economic implications in the mode of distribution of profits. We conclude with the idea that the self-managed practice should replicate its central precepts: collective ownership, lack of surplus extraction and participatory democracy. However, experiences often achieve partially such principles.Fil: Fontanet, Fernando. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Sociales; ArgentinaFil: Garcia, Ariel Oscar. Matching the controller role: individuals vs companies

    Get PDF
Finding a good match in the C-Suite is critical for maximizing business value and capitalizing on competitive advantages. This study analyzes the roles of controllers in organizational descriptions and executives’ profiles, as they both define the position and craft the profession. This paper proposes a framework to describe and classify the existing controller types based on an extended review and description of the available literature. Then, using a clustering method based on the semisupervised k-means, we mapped a sample of 45 controllers to their dominant profile and contrasted individuals’ characteristics against the companies’ definitions of the role. This study reveals that the understanding of the types of controllers, which is usually presented as a dichotomy, may lead to mismatches between what is needed and what is performed. The clustering analysis reveals a significant mismatch between individuals and the organizations defining the role. The framework and clustering method could be used for multiple purposes, such as evaluating what type of controller an individual is or a company needs, which would improve recruitment processes to achieve better matches. The framework expands the identification of controllers from a dichotomy to a gradual classification and describes four controller profiles. This perspective further describes the role and validates the framework using data mining tools

The Expectations for Faculty in Latin America

    Get PDF
Faculty load in the US varies from 40-40-10 (research-teaching-service) in research oriented institutions to 25-50-25 in teaching oriented institutions. Consulting is normally not part of the formula and case writing is generally not considered as part of the research load. Latin America is quite different. A 25-25-25-25 load (that includes consulting as a separate area) is not atypical and research can often be accomplished through case writing. However, Latin America is not homogenous and some very specific institutions are exceptional even including few faculty positions that are 100% research. The panel will provide an overview of the expectations in different countries (particularly Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru) and discuss how current expectations deal with international accrediting bodies that might be requiring different mixtures

Aspiraciones y compromisos de las universidades peruanas

    Get PDF
