The purpose of this research was to investigate the attitudes of the Bangladeshi disaffected pupils in Yr.10 & 11, their teachers, parents, career officers and significant members of Bangladeshi community, towards work-related learning and also to conduct an extensive examination into the effectiveness of work-related learning for Bangladeshi disaffected pupils at key stage 4. A mixed methodology design was employed. Quantitative methodology was used to develop and validate a questionnaire with 62 items to investigate the attitudes of the 328 research subjects towards work-related learning. A response rate of 889c (N=288) was obtained showing their overall positive attitudes towards work-related learning. Using Principle Components Analysis (PCA), two factors, 'skills for working life' (SWL) and 'learning opportunities'(LOP) were identified from an overall number of 17 factors with eigenvalue greater than 1. Factor 1 with an eigenvalue 14.88 accounted for 28% of the variance and consisted of 32 items. Factor 2 with an eigenvalue 3.06 accounted for 4.9% of the variance and consisted of 27 items. An internal reliability of 0.93 for factor one, and 0.88 for factor two, was found by using Cronbach's alpha. In the qualitative arm of the research, a case study approach was employed to determine the reasons for the attitudes and the extent of the effectiveness of work-related learning within a Bangladeshi community at Key Stage 4. By purposive sampling 24 people were selected for in-depth interviews from both extremes of attitudes - those who either strongly agreed or strongly disagreed - within quantitative sample. The themes that emerged included skills for working life, learning opportunities and utilisation of traditional practical skills through out-of-school context. Overall, the National Curriculum was inappropriate for many pupils, religion and culture were not seen as barriers to education, and work-related learning programmes reduced the disaffection of pupils within the Bangladeshi community. Finally the research concludes with suggestions for the Bangladeshi community, schools, the Department for Education and Skills, the Careers Service, employers, parents and other partners involved in work-related learning programmes

An investigation into disruptive innovation in the entertainment industry

    Get PDF
As society moves towards digital developments, people demand more flexible forms of consumption. In the craving for new products and services, globalisation presents itself as a driving factor for economic and social changes, accelerating innovations arise. Thus, this paper aims to discuss the role of disruptive innovation as a democratic process to introduce new technologies to the world. The analysis of existent literature indicates that disruptive business models not only respond for significant changes in consumers behaviour but also induce competitors to reshape their strategy. In addition, an investigation into disruptive innovations in the entertainment industry, particularly in the subscription video-on-demand sector, identifies central ideas, patterns, and contexts related to disruption. Through a qualitative analysis based on bibliographic research and Netflix as a case study, the main findings of this research present the emerging of business models as a leading economic force, outlining their effects on businesses outside their core market and the new ways of consuming entertainment introduced by them. Consequently, further research proves to be needed to confirm and evaluate the relationship between disruptive entertainment business models and their consequences in society

Nanobiomaterials for biological barrier crossing and controlled drug delivery

Nanoscale delivery systems that respond to external stimuli or internal cues in the cellular microenvironment aiming for on demand cargo release, are of great interest for the controlled delivery of therapeutic compounds at disease targets. However, to create these systems a deep understanding of nanomaterial-cell interactions is necessary. In Chapter 2 of this thesis, the internalization of nanogels (NGs) with different stiffnesses by brain endothelial cells and its inverse correlation with their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is described; Harder NGs showed a higher uptake, while softer NGs exhibited an enhanced capacity of crossing the BBB. The same NGs were employed in Chapter 2 to assess the effect of stiffness on the uptake of nanogels in 2D monocultures and a co-culture of glioma cells and macrophages. A preferred internalization of harder NGs was observed, although softer NGs showed a higher cytotoxic effect. In co-culture, the toxic effect was reduced, likely due to changes in macrophage phenotype as induced by factors secreted by glioma cells. Chapter 4 addresses the development and in vitro evaluation of breast cancer cell membrane-coated polymeric nanocarriers (NCs) containing paclitaxel as a model drug. The membrane-coated NCs significantly reduced cell viability of breast cancer cells when compared to non-coated NCs, but did not affect other epithelial cell types. To conclude, Chapter 5 describes the development of a light-inducible drug delivery system employing light-activated molecular motors (MMs). The incorporation of MMs in liposomes yielded a controllable light-responsive release system through reversible destabilization of the lipid bilayer

Foucault as an Ethical Philosopher: The Genealogical Discussion of Antiquity and the Present

The paper further realises Foucault’s genealogy of ethics to grasp genealogy as the totality of three axes – power, truth, and ethics – driven by the ethical axis. The paper demonstrates that Foucault’s discussion of antiquity is genealogical. The main focus is Foucault’s late work and, in particular, his final lectures on The Courage of Truth. The paper highlights the genealogical function of the distinction between ‘Laches’ and ‘Alcibiades’. ‘Laches’ provides a heuristic source for self-care in the present in the form of practices of living tied to the ‘Laches’ parrhesia. But, it is also a critique of the present applied to democratic theories that have used the neo-platonic line of the ‘Alcibiades’ parrhesia – of which Foucault disapproves – as their source in creating traceable technologies of the self tied to structures of domination. Such technologies freeze games of power and governmentalise the problematisation of how to govern the self. Hence, the genealogical discussion of antiquity in connection with an understanding of genealogy as problematisation should be perceived as a heuristic source of self-creation with critical implications for evaluating power regimes in the present. The paper introduces the link between the ancient past and the present with respect to Foucault vis-à-vis certain democratic theories. The central aim is to consider on what grounds placing the problematisation of the self at the centre of a new politics can be also linked to governmentality. In this context, the paper also clarifies the wider implication of its core premise for Foucauldian studies and the emerging discussion of parrhesia

This research is about analysis of elements of information architecture at repository “Issues Network” which host BENACIB collection. Elements of information architecture are related with information organization process such as classification, indexation and cataloguing. This elements may or may not be navigation facilitators at interface or retrieval information, depending how them are showed. This research aimed to analyze which elements of information architecture are being used in the structure in the repository “Issues Network”, in relation to the physical description and thematic information. It was used analysis descriptive to analyze qualitative data from repository “Issues Network” on the relationship between organizational procedures of information and the architecture elements of accurate and unambiguous information. This analysis shows high-usability of database in front of navigation interfaces that present some remarkable characteristics of elements of information architecture
