    A methodology to introduce sustainability into the Final Year Project to foster sustainable engineering projects

    The introduction of sustainability skills into higher education curricula is a natural effect of the increasing importance of sustainability in our daily lives. Topics like green computing, sustainable design or environmental engineering have become part of the knowledge required by today’s engineers. Furthermore, we strongly believe that the introduction of this skill will eventually enable future engineers to develop sustainable products, services and projects. The Final Year Project is the last academic stage facing students and a step towards their future professional engineering projects. As such, it constitutes a rehearsal for their professional future and an ideal opportunity for reflecting on whether their Final Year Project is sustainable or not, and to what extent. It also provides a good tool for reviewing the lessons learned about sustainability during the degree course and for applying them in a holistic and integrated way. In this paper, we present a guide that allows both students and advisors to think carefully about the sustainability of engineering projects, in particular the Final Year Project.Postprint (author’s final draft

    Spatial clustering of interacting bugs: Levy flights versus Gaussian jumps

    A biological competition model where the individuals of the same species perform a two-dimensional Markovian continuous-time random walk and undergo reproduction and death is studied. The competition is introduced through the assumption that the reproduction rate depends on the crowding in the neighborhood. The spatial dynamics corresponds either to normal diffusion characterized by Gaussian jumps or to superdiffusion characterized by L\'evy flights. It is observed that in both cases periodic patterns occur for appropriate parameters of the model, indicating that the general macroscopic collective behavior of the system is more strongly influenced by the competition for the resources than by the type of spatial dynamics.     Molecular elucidation of CO2 methanation over a highly active, selective and stable LaNiO3/CeO2-derived catalyst by in situ FTIR and NAP-XPS

    The CO2 methanation mechanism over the highly active (TOF=75.1 h−1), selective (>92%) and stable 10% LaNiO3/CeO2-derived catalyst is still unresolved. The surface of the catalyst is monitored under hydrogenation (H2), oxidizing (CO2) and CO2 methanation (H2 +CO2) conditions by near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) using synchrotron radiation. Meanwhile, the main reaction intermediates are identified by in situ FTIR analysis. NAP-XPS experiments confirm that LaNiO3 perovskite reduction leads to the ex-solution of Ni0 nanoparticles and Ni2+single bondCeO2−x and Ni2+single bondLa2O3 interfaces conformation, favouring the CO2 adsorption and the H2 dissociation/transfer. In situ FTIR experiments combined with the C1s spectra (NAP-XPS) suggest that the CO2 activation occurs on CeO2−x (oxygen vacancies and OH–) at low temperatures, in the form of bicarbonates; whereas, mono-/bidentate carbonates are formed on different strength La2O3 sites at increasing temperatures.     El avance tecnológico está incorporando nuevas herramientas de aprendizaje para complementar el estudio y realizar prácticas de autoevaluación de valor formativo, ya que mediante el ejercicio de evaluación el estudiante puede reflexionar sobre su progreso y dirigir mejor su esfuerzo en el estudio. En este marco la plataforma SIETTE es un sistema web que permite la creación y mantenimiento de bancos de preguntas, y realización de tests, que implementa la Teoría Clásica de Test (CTT), Teoría de Respuesta al Ítem (TRI), permite realizar Tests Adaptativos Informatizados (TAI), y puede usarse como herramienta para el aprendizaje colaborativo. Siette puede usarse como módulo de evaluación de un Sistema Tutor Inteligente (STI) o conectado a una Plataforma de Teleeducación (LMS) como Moodle. Siette implementa muchas otras opciones para la realización de prácticas de reconocimiento, repaso, y evaluación. Esta comunicación presenta los resultados de varios años de trabajo con esta herramienta, las diversas experiencias de formación y evaluación de conocimientos sobre Botánica Forestal. Se han definido más de 2500 preguntas, la mayoría basadas en imágenes y realizado mas de 4300 sesiones de evaluación en la Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Forestal de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid en colaboración con la Universidad de Málaga

    Swift heavy ion damage to sodium chloride: synergy between excitation and thermal spikes

    Systematic data on the effect of irradiation with swift ions (Zn at 735 MeV and Xe at 929 MeV) on NaCl single crystals have been analysed in terms of a synergetic two-spike approach (thermal and excitation spikes). The coupling of the two spikes, simultaneously generated by the irradiation, contributes to the operation of a non-radiative exciton decay model as proposed for purely ionization damage. Using this scheme, we have accounted for the π-emission yield of self-trapped excitons and its temperature dependence under ion-beam irradiation. Moreover, the initial production rates of F-centre growth have also been reasonably simulated for irradiation at low temperatures ( < 100 K), where colour centre annealing and aggregation can be neglected

    Transcriptomic profiling of skeletal muscle reveals candidate genes influencing muscle growth and associated lipid composition in Portuguese local pig breeds

    Gene expression is one of the main factors to influence meat quality by modulating fatty acid metabolism, composition, and deposition rates in muscle tissue. This study aimed to explore the transcriptomics of the Longissimus lumborum muscle in two local pig breeds with distinct genetic background using next-generation sequencing technology and Real-Time qPCR. RNA-seq yielded 49 differentially expressed genes between breeds, 34 overexpressed in the Alentejano (AL) and 15 in the Bísaro (BI) breed. Specific slow type myosin heavy chain components were associated with AL (MYH7) and BI (MYH3) pigs, while an overexpression of MAP3K14 in AL may be associated with their lower loin proportion, induced insulin resistance, and increased inflammatory response via NFkB activation. Overexpression of RUFY1 in AL pigs may explain the higher intramuscular (IMF) content via higher GLUT4 recruitment and consequently higher glucose uptake that can be stored as fat. Several candidate genes for lipid metabolism, excluded in the RNA-seq analysis due to low counts, such as ACLY, ADIPOQ, ELOVL6, LEP and ME1 were identified by qPCR as main gene factors defining the processes that influence meat composition and quality. These results agree with the fatter profile of the AL pig breed and adiponectin resistance can be postulated as responsible for the overexpression of MAP3K140s coding product NIK, failing to restore insulin sensitivity
