Exploration of Resonant Continuum and Giant Resonance in the Relativistic Approach
Single-particle resonant-states in the continuum are determined by solving
scattering states of the Dirac equation with proper asymptotic conditions in
the relativistic mean field theory (RMF). The regular and irregular solutions
of the Dirac equation at a large radius where the nuclear potentials vanish are
relativistic Coulomb wave functions, which are calculated numerically.
Energies, widths and wave functions of single-particle resonance states in the
continuum for ^{120}Sn are studied in the RMF with the parameter set of NL3.
The isoscalar giant octupole resonance of ^{120}Sn is investigated in a fully
consistent relativistic random phase approximation. Comparing the results with
including full continuum states and only those single-particle resonances we
find that the contributions from those resonant-states dominate in the nuclear
giant resonant processes.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
Antibiotic Prophylaxis with Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole versus No Treatment after Mid-to-Distal Hypospadias Repair: A Prospective, Randomized Study
Purpose. To evaluate the impact of prophylactic antibiotics after distal hypospadias repair on postoperative bacteriuria, symptomatic urinary tract infection, and postoperative complications in a prospective, randomized trial. Materials and Methods. Consecutive patients aged 6 months to 2 years were enrolled at our institution between June 2013 and May 2017. Consenting patients were randomized to antibiotic prophylaxis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole versus no antibiotic. Patients had catheterized urine samples obtained at surgery and 6–10 days postoperatively. The primary outcome was bacteriuria and pyuria at postoperative urine collection. Secondary outcomes included symptomatic urinary tract infection and postoperative complications. Results. 70 patients consented to the study, of which 35 were randomized to receive antibiotics compared to 32 who did not. Demographics, severity of hypospadias, and type of repair were similar between the groups. Patients in the treatment group had significantly less pyuria (18%) and bacteriuria (11%) present at stent removal compared to the nontreatment group (55% and 63%; p=0.01 and p<0.001, resp.). No patient had a symptomatic urinary tract infection. There were 11 postoperative complications. Conclusions. Routine antibiotic prophylaxis appears to significantly decrease bacteriuria and pyuria in the immediate postoperative period; however, no difference was observed in symptomatic urinary tract infection or postoperative complications. Particle-unstable nuclei in the Hartree-Fock theory
Ground state energies and decay widths of particle unstable nuclei are
calculated within the Hartree-Fock approximation by performing a complex
scaling of the many-body Hamiltonian. Through this transformation, the wave
functions of the resonant states become square integrable. The method is
implemented with Skyrme effective interactions. Several Skyrme parametrizations
are tested on four unstable nuclei: 10He, 12O, 26O and 28O.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Three-body Faddeev Calculation for 11Li with Separable Potentials
The halo nucleus Li is treated as a three-body system consisting of an
inert core of Li plus two valence neutrons. The Faddeev equations are
solved using separable potentials to describe the two-body interactions,
corresponding in the n-Li subsystem to a p resonance plus a
virtual s-wave state. The experimental Li energy is taken as input and
the Li transverse momentum distribution in Li is studied.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 1 figur
Breakup Reactions of 11Li within a Three-Body Model
We use a three-body model to investigate breakup reactions of 11Li (n+n+9Li)
on a light target. The interaction parameters are constrained by known
properties of the two-body subsystems, the 11Li binding energy and
fragmentation data. The remaining degrees of freedom are discussed. The
projectile-target interactions are described by phenomenological optical
potentials. The model predicts dependence on beam energy and target,
differences between longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions and
provides absolute values for all computed differential cross sections. We give
an almost complete series of observables and compare with corresponding
measurements. Remarkably good agreement is obtained. The relative neutron-9Li
p-wave content is about 40%. A p-resonance, consistent with measurements at
about 0.5 MeV of width about 0.4 MeV, seems to be necessary. The widths of the
momentum distributions are insensitive to target and beam energy with a
tendency to increase towards lower energies. The transverse momentum
distributions are broader than the longitudinal due to the diffraction process.
The absolute values of the cross sections follow the neutron-target cross
sections and increase strongly for beam energies decreasing below 100 MeV/u.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, RevTeX, psfig.st

Obstructive sleep apnea is underrecognized and underdiagnosed in patients undergoing bariatric surgery
The aim of this study was to evaluate prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea among patients undergoing bariatric surgery and the predictive value of various clinical parameters: body mass index (BMI), neck circumference (NC) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). We performed a prospective, multidisciplinary, single-center observational study including all patients on the waiting list for bariatric surgery between June 2009 and June 2010, irrespective of history or clinical findings. Patients visited our ENT outpatient clinic for patient history, ENT and general examination and underwent a full night polysomnography, unless performed previously. As much as 69.9% of the patients fulfilled the criteria for OSA (mean BMI 44.2 ± SD 6.4 kg/m2); 40.4% of the patients met the criteria for severe OSA. The regression models found BMI to be the best clinical predictor, while the ROC curve found the NC to be the most accurate predictor of the presence of OSA. The discrepancy of the results and the poor statistical power suggest that all three clinical parameters are inadequate predictors of OSA. In conclusion, in this large patient series, 69.9% of patients undergoing BS meet the criteria for OSA. More than 40% of these patients have severe OSA. A mere 13.3% of the patients were diagnosed with OSA before being placed on the waiting list for BS. On statistical analysis, increased neck circumference, BMI and the ESS were found to be insufficient predictors of the presence of OSA. Polysomnography is an essential component of the preoperative workup of patients undergoing BS. When OSA is found, specific perioperative measures are indicated
Biomagnifcation and body distribution of ivermectin in dung beetles

of ivermectin, a widely used parasiticide, in the non-target dung beetle Thorectes lusitanicus (Jekel)
was developed and validated. Biomagnifcation kinetics of ivermectin in T. lusitanicus was investigated
by following uptake, elimination, and distribution of the compound in dung beetles feeding on
contaminated faeces. Results showed that ivermectin was biomagnifed in adults of T. lusitanicus
when exposed to non-lethal doses via food uptake. Ivermectin was quickly transferred from the gut to
the haemolymph, generating a biomagnifcation factor (BMFk) three times higher in the haemolymph
than in the gut after an uptake period of 12 days. The fat body appeared to exert a major role on
the biomagnifcation of ivermectin in the insect body, showing a BMFk 1.6 times higher than in the
haemolymph. The results of this study highlight that the biomagnifcation of ivermectin should be
investigated from a global dung-based food web perspective and that the use of these antiparasitic
substances should be monitored and controlled on a precautionary basis. Thus, we suggest that an
additional efort be made in the development of standardised regulatory recommendations to guide
biomagnifcation studies in terrestrial organisms, but also that it is necessary to adapt existing methods
to assess the efects of such veterinary medical products
Spatial effects, sampling errors, and task specialization in the honey bee
Task allocation patterns should depend on the spatial distribution of work within the nest, variation in task demand, and the movement patterns of workers, however, relatively little research has focused on these topics. This study uses a spatially explicit agent based model to determine whether such factors alone can generate biases in task performance at the individual level in the honey bees, Apis mellifera. Specialization (bias in task performance) is shown to result from strong sampling error due to localized task demand, relatively slow moving workers relative to nest size, and strong spatial variation in task demand. To date, specialization has been primarily interpreted with the response threshold concept, which is focused on intrinsic (typically genotypic) differences between workers. Response threshold variation and sampling error due to spatial effects are not mutually exclusive, however, and this study suggests that both contribute to patterns of task bias at the individual level. While spatial effects are strong enough to explain some documented cases of specialization; they are relatively short term and not explanatory for long term cases of specialization. In general, this study suggests that the spatial layout of tasks and fluctuations in their demand must be explicitly controlled for in studies focused on identifying genotypic specialists
