Control Electronics For Semiconductor Spin Qubits
Future universal quantum computers solving problems of practical relevance
are expected to require at least qubits, which is a massive scale-up
from the present numbers of less than 50 qubits operated together. Out of the
different types of qubits, solid state qubits are considered to be viable
candidates for this scale-up, but interfacing to and controlling such a large
number of qubits is a complex challenge that has not been solved yet. One
possibility to address this challenge is to use qubit control circuits located
close to the qubits at cryogenic temperatures. In this work we evaluate the
feasibility of this idea, taking as a reference the physical requirements of a
two-electron spin qubit and the specifications of a standard 65 nm
complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. Using principles and
flows from electrical systems engineering we provide realistic estimates of the
footprint and of the power consumption of a complete control-circuit
architecture. Our results show that with further research it is possible to
provide scalable electrical control in the vicinity of the qubit, with our
concept
Neutrino Physics with JUNO
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purposeunderground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determinationof the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable ofobserving neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, includingsupernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such asnucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physicsmotivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for variousproposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plantsat 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrinospectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the sixoscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from atypical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elasticscattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable informationon the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrinoenergy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrinosamples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. protondecay via the decay channel. The JUNO detector will providea unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle andastrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest tounderstanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the buildingblocks of our Universe
Detection of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO
As an underground multi-purpose neutrino detector with 20 kton liquid scintillator, Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is competitive with and complementary to the water-Cherenkov detectors on the search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB). Typical supernova models predict 2-4 events per year within the optimal observation window in the JUNO detector. The dominant background is from the neutral-current (NC) interaction of atmospheric neutrinos with 12C nuclei, which surpasses the DSNB by more than one order of magnitude. We evaluated the systematic uncertainty of NC background from the spread of a variety of data-driven models and further developed a method to determine NC background within 15\% with {\it{in}} {\it{situ}} measurements after ten years of running. Besides, the NC-like backgrounds can be effectively suppressed by the intrinsic pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities of liquid scintillators. In this talk, I will present in detail the improvements on NC background uncertainty evaluation, PSD discriminator development, and finally, the potential of DSNB sensitivity in JUNO
Radioactivity control strategy for the JUNO detector
602siopenJUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV. Charge Pump Clock Generation PLL for the Data Output Blocks of the Upgraded ATLAS Front-End in 130nm CMOS
FE-I4 is the 130 nm ATLAS pixel IC currently under development for upgraded Large Hadron Collider (LHC) luminosities. FE-I4 is based on a low-power analog pixel array and digital architecture concepts tuned to higher hit rates [1]. An integrated Phase Locked Loop (PLL) has been developed that locally generates a clock signal for the 160 Mbit/s output data stream from the 40 MHz bunch crossing reference clock. This block is designed for low power, low area consumption and recovers quickly from loss of lock related to single-event transients in the high radiation environment of the ATLAS pixel detector. After a general introduction to the new FE-I4 pixel front-end chip, this work focuses on the FE-I4 output blocks and on a first PLL prototype test chip submitted in early 2009. The PLL is nominally operated from a 1.2V supply and consumes 3.84mW of DC power. Under nominal operating conditions, the control voltage settles to within 2% of its nominal value in less than 700 ns. The nominal operating frequency for the ring-oscillator based Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) is fVCO = 640MHz. The last sections deal with a fabricated demonstrator that provides the option of feeding the single-ended 80MHz output clock of the PLL as a clock signal to a digital test logic block integrated on-chip. The digital logic consists of an eight bit pseudo-random binary sequence generator, an eight bit to ten bit coder and a serializer. It processes data with a speed of 160 Mbit/s. All dynamic signals are driven off-chip by custommade pseudo-LVDS drivers
Automated Calibration Technique for Predistortion Modulation Loops using Asynchronous Phase Detection
A novel calibration scheme for predistortion Σ∆ PLLs is proposed in this paper. In contrast to present calibration al gorithms this technique offers a digital representation of the high frequency phase characteristic. The architecture uses minimum chip area by synchronously sampling the data content of an asynchronous divider chain. Using this tech nique to detect the phase difference during a step response allows to determine the real loop gain within 7 µs with an accuracy better than 0.1%. Obtaining this, the deviation from the desired loop gain can be adjusted by a digitally controlled charge pump in order to derive the wanted loop transfer function. This is mandatory for predistortion mod ulation loops. The architecture is designed by systemthe oretical calculation of the loop behaviour and verified by mixed signal VHDL-AMS simulations
