EPIC 219217635: A Doubly Eclipsing Quadruple System Containing an Evolved Binary
We have discovered a doubly eclipsing, bound, quadruple star system in the
field of K2 Campaign 7. EPIC 219217635 is a stellar image with that
contains an eclipsing binary (`EB') with d and a second EB with
d. We have obtained followup radial-velocity (`RV')
spectroscopy observations, adaptive optics imaging, as well as ground-based
photometric observations. From our analysis of all the observations, we derive
good estimates for a number of the system parameters. We conclude that (1) both
binaries are bound in a quadruple star system; (2) a linear trend to the RV
curve of binary A is found over a 2-year interval, corresponding to an
acceleration, cm s; (3) small
irregular variations are seen in the eclipse-timing variations (`ETVs')
detected over the same interval; (4) the orbital separation of the quadruple
system is probably in the range of 8-25 AU; and (5) the orbital planes of the
two binaries must be inclined with respect to each other by at least
25. In addition, we find that binary B is evolved, and the cooler and
currently less massive star has transferred much of its envelope to the
currently more massive star. We have also demonstrated that the system is
sufficiently bright that the eclipses can be followed using small ground-based
telescopes, and that this system may be profitably studied over the next decade
when the outer orbit of the quadruple is expected to manifest itself in the ETV

EPIC 220204960: A Quadruple Star System Containing Two Strongly Interacting Eclipsing Binaries
We present a strongly interacting quadruple system associated with the K2
target EPIC 220204960. The K2 target itself is a Kp = 12.7 magnitude star at
Teff ~ 6100 K which we designate as "B-N" (blue northerly image). The host of
the quadruple system, however, is a Kp = 17 magnitude star with a composite
M-star spectrum, which we designate as "R-S" (red southerly image). With a 3.2"
separation and similar radial velocities and photometric distances, 'B-N' is
likely physically associated with 'R-S', making this a quintuple system, but
that is incidental to our main claim of a strongly interacting quadruple system
in 'R-S'. The two binaries in 'R-S' have orbital periods of 13.27 d and 14.41
d, respectively, and each has an inclination angle of >89 degrees. From our
analysis of radial velocity measurements, and of the photometric lightcurve, we
conclude that all four stars are very similar with masses close to 0.4 Msun.
Both of the binaries exhibit significant ETVs where those of the primary and
secondary eclipses 'diverge' by 0.05 days over the course of the 80-day
observations. Via a systematic set of numerical simulations of quadruple
systems consisting of two interacting binaries, we conclude that the outer
orbital period is very likely to be between 300 and 500 days. If sufficient
time is devoted to RV studies of this faint target, the outer orbit should be

Spontaneous Magnetisation in a Quantum Wire
An existence of predominant symmetrical spin configuration (spin polarised
phase) and "diluted" density of states (pseudo-gap) in a layer under the Fermi
level in a quantum wire is predicted. The condition of cross-over from
non-polarised phase to polarised one was derived. The transition occurs for
sufficiently low electron density in a wire and is accompanied by an acute
decrease of electron density of states near the Fermi level.It may result in a
corresponding decrease of conductance. A similar effect may exist in a

L-ornithine phenylacetate attenuates increased arterial and extracellular brain ammonia and prevents intracranial hypertension in pigs with acute liver failure
Hyperammonemia is a feature of acute liver failure (ALF), which is associated with increased intracranial pressure (ICP) and brain herniation. We hypothesized that a combination of L-ornithine and phenylacetate (OP) would synergistically reduce toxic levels of ammonia by (1) L-ornithine increasing glutamine production (ammonia removal) through muscle glutamine synthetase and (2) phenylacetate conjugating with the ornithine-derived glutamine to form phenylacetylglutamine, which is excreted into the urine. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of OP on arterial and extracellular brain ammonia concentrations as well as ICP in pigs with ALF (induced by liver devascularization). ALF pigs were treated with OP (L-ornithine 0.07 g/kg/hour intravenously; phenylbutyrate, prodrug for phenylacetate; 0.05 g/kg/hour intraduodenally) for 8 hours following ALF induction. ICP was monitored throughout, and arterial and extracellular brain ammonia were measured along with phenylacetylglutamine in the urine. Compared with ALF + saline pigs, treatment with OP significantly attenuated concentrations of arterial ammonia (589.6 +/- 56.7 versus 365.2 +/- 60.4 mumol/L [mean +/- SEM], P= 0.002) and extracellular brain ammonia (P= 0.01). The ALF-induced increase in ICP was prevented in ALF + OP-treated pigs (18.3 +/- 1.3 mmHg in ALF + saline versus 10.3 +/- 1.1 mmHg in ALF + OP-treated pigs;P= 0.001). The value of ICP significantly correlated with the concentration of extracellular brain ammonia (r(2) = 0.36,P< 0.001). Urine phenylacetylglutamine levels increased to 4.9 +/- 0.6 micromol/L in ALF + OP-treated pigs versus 0.5 +/- 0.04 micromol/L in ALF + saline-treated pigs (P< 0.001).Conclusion:L-Ornithine and phenylacetate act synergistically to successfully attenuate increases in arterial ammonia, which is accompanied by a significant decrease in extracellular brain ammonia and prevention of intracranial hypertension in pigs with ALF
Empowering Students in Leading their Education and Practice: The Design Workbook

An attempt to respond to this question is presented through the Design Workbook: a curricular project that has been proposed and developed over the course of three phases. In Phase One, the objectives, structure and format were defined: an online interface containing activities organised under five chapters that aim at building students’ creative confidence and sensitivity to surrounding contexts, and prepare them to lead their career path. In Phase Two, the website was developed to its first usable version, and content applied into live classes. Phase Three was marked with content refinement for the activities, navigation and feature redesign in the interface, and new ways of conducting the course. The article summarises learning points from the first two phases, and provides new findings and analyses from the final phase. It also includes a sample of the activities content, student works and feedback as well as the interface development stages. The methodology utilised throughout consisted of active research, as well as learning outcomes assessment using direct and indirect measures. Assessment results and classroom observations confirmed that students benefit greatly from visualising ideas, hands on activities, design thinking workshops, as well as from collaborative experiences, to avoid facing designer\u27s block and to practise empowerment of self and others. Finally, challenges, opportunities and future implications are discussed, alongside implementation possibilities: The Design Workbook can run as a sole course, spread across the curriculum, and expand into the community
Effect of the molecular structure of the polymer and nucleation on the optical properties of polypropylene homo- and copolymers.
Two soluble nucleating agents were used to modify the optical properties of nine PP homo- and random copolymers. The ethylene content of the polymers changed between 0 and 5.3 wt%. Chain regularity was characterized by the stepwise isothermal segregation technique (SIST), while optical properties by the measurement of the haze of injection molded samples. Crystallization and melting characteristics were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analysis of the results proved that lamella thickness and change in crystallinity influence haze only slightly. A model was introduced which describes quantitatively the dependence of nucleation efficiency and haze on the concentration of the nucleating agent. The model assumes that the same factors influence the peak temperature of crystallization and optical properties. The analysis of the results proved that the assumption is valid under the same crystallization conditions. The parameters of the model depend on the molecular architecture of the polymer. Chain regularity determines supermolecular structure and thus the dependence of optical properties on nucleation
A comparison of Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for vertical particle transport in the water column
A common task in oceanography is to model the vertical movement of particles
such as microplastics, nanoparticles, mineral particles, gas bubbles, oil
droplets, fish eggs, plankton, or algae. In some cases, the distribution of the
vertical rise or settling velocities of the particles in question can span a
wide range, covering several orders of magnitude, often due to a broad
particle size distribution or differences in density. This requires
numerical methods that are able to adequately resolve a wide and possibly
multi-modal velocity distribution.
Lagrangian particle methods are commonly used for these applications. A
strength of such methods is that each particle can have its own rise or
settling speed, which makes it easy to achieve a good representation of a
continuous distribution of speeds. An alternative approach
is to use Eulerian methods, where the partial differential equations
describing the transport problem are solved directly with numerical methods.
In Eulerian methods, different rise or settling speeds must be represented
as discrete classes, and in practice, only a limited number of classes can be
included.
Here, we consider three different examples of applications for a
water column model: positively buoyant fish eggs, a mixture of positively
and negatively buoyant microplastics, and positively buoyant oil droplets
being entrained by waves. For each of the three cases, we formulate a model
for the vertical transport based on the advection–diffusion equation with
suitable boundary conditions and, in one case, a reaction term. We give a
detailed description of an Eulerian and a Lagrangian implementation of these
models, and we demonstrate that they give equivalent results for selected
example cases. We also pay special attention to the convergence of the model
results with an increasing number of classes in the Eulerian scheme and with the
number of particles in the Lagrangian scheme. For the Lagrangian scheme, we
see the 1/Np convergence, as expected for a Monte Carlo method,
while for the Eulerian implementation, we see a second-order (1/Nk2)
convergence with the number of classes.</p
Laypersons' understanding of relative risk reductions: Randomised cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite increasing recognition of the importance of involving patients in decisions on preventive healthcare interventions, little is known about how well patients understand and utilise information provided on the relative benefits from these interventions. The aim of this study was to explore whether lay people can discriminate between preventive interventions when effectiveness is presented in terms of relative risk reduction (RRR), and whether such discrimination is influenced by presentation of baseline risk.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The study was a randomised cross-sectional interview survey of a representative sample (n = 1,519) of lay people with mean age 59 (range 40–98) years in Denmark. In addition to demographic information, respondents were asked to consider a hypothetical drug treatment to prevent heart attack. Its effectiveness was randomly presented as RRR of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 percent, and half of the respondents were presented with quantitative information on the baseline risk of heart attack. The respondents had also been asked whether they were diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia or had experienced a heart attack.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In total, 873 (58%) of the respondents consented to the hypothetical treatment. While 49% accepted the treatment when RRR = 10%, the acceptance rate was 58–60% for RRR>10. There was no significant difference in acceptance rates across respondents irrespective of whether they had been presented with quantitative information on baseline risk or not.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this study, lay people's decisions about therapy were only slightly influenced by the magnitude of the effect when it was presented in terms of RRR. The results may indicate that lay people have difficulties in discriminating between levels of effectiveness when they are presented in terms of RRR.</p
