    The ESPON 2013 programme : the development of the islands – European islands and cohesion policy (EUROISLANDS)

    The report was accepted by the ESPON Monitoring Committee as it demonstrates interesting outputs and observations on the situation and development of the European islands. The report raises awareness of the specificities and diversity of this specific type of territories and takes into consideration the current policy debate related to European Cohesion Policy. The revised version of the Final Report has been considered meeting the minimum demands in contractual terms. However, some case studies raised comments from individual stakeholders involved. Some improvements requested were not implemented to their entire satisfaction as part of the revision of the Final Report. It was felt that the case studies could have been better used and integrated in the analysis, making the report richer, more precise and evidence based, enhancing its narrative.peer-reviewe

    NEAR at n_TOF/CERN: Preparing the first multi-foil activation measurement

    The n_TOF facility at CERN is a neutron Time-Of-Flight facility based on a spallation neutron source. During the Second Long Shutdown (LS2) , a new experimental zone was designed and delivered. This new experimental area -the NEAR station - is located very close to the lead spallation target, at a distance of just ~3m. In this way, the high luminosity of the n_TOF neutron spallation source can be fully exploited. Towards the characterization of the new experimental area as well for the benchmarking of the performed simulations, the multi-foil activation measurement will be implemented. Eleven threshold and seven capture reference reactions will be utilized for the unfolding of the NEAR neutron beam energy spectrum that stretches from the meV to the GeV region

    First Results of the 140^{140}Ce(n,γ)141^{141}Ce Cross-Section Measurement at n_TOF

    An accurate measurement of the 140^{140}Ce(n,γ) energy-dependent cross-section was performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN. This cross-section is of great importance because it represents a bottleneck for the s-process nucleosynthesis and determines to a large extent the cerium abundance in stars. The measurement was motivated by the significant difference between the cerium abundance measured in globular clusters and the value predicted by theoretical stellar models. This discrepancy can be ascribed to an overestimation of the 140^{140}Ce capture cross-section due to a lack of accurate nuclear data. For this measurement, we used a sample of cerium oxide enriched in 140^{140}Ce to 99.4%. The experimental apparatus consisted of four deuterated benzene liquid scintillator detectors, which allowed us to overcome the difficulties present in the previous measurements, thanks to their very low neutron sensitivity. The accurate analysis of the p-wave resonances and the calculation of their average parameters are fundamental to improve the evaluation of the 140^{140}Ce Maxwellian-averaged cross-section

    The dE/dx method and its implementation on the search for the lambdab baryon

    Due to the character of the original source materials and the nature of batch digitization, quality control issues may be present in this document. Please report any quality issues you encounter to [email protected], referencing the URI of the item.Includes bibliographical references.We examine in detail the dE/dx method for particle identification in the case of the long lived secondary hadrons and we try to implement it on the search for the elusive Ab baryon using a Monte Carlo simulation. We also analyze pp collision data at square root (s)- = 1.8 TeV in order to test the ability of the method to correctly identify protons and pions. The results showed that although in the decay [ ] we can only examine a very small part of the momentum spectrum of p and 7, the identification is correct in more than 94% of the cases. Therefore we believe that dE/dx can become a powerful tool in the search for the [ ] baryon at Fermilab

    Channeling implantation of high energy carbon ions in a diamond crystal: Determination of the induced crystal amorphization

    This work reports on the induced diamond crystal amorphization by 4 MeV carbon ions implanted in the oriented crystal and its determination by application of RBS/C and EBS/C techniques. The spectra from the implanted samples were recorded for 1.2, 1.5, 1.75 and 1.9 MeV protons. For the two latter ones the strong resonance of the nuclear elastic scattering (12)c(p,p(0))C-12 at 1.737 MeV was explored. The backscattering channeling spectra were successfully fitted and the ion beam induced crystal amorphization depth profile was determined using a phenomenological approach, which is based on the properly defined Gompertz type dechanneling functions for protons in the diamond crystal channels and the introduction of the concept of ion beam amorphization, which is implemented through our newly developed computer code CSIM

    EBS/C proton spectra from a virgin diamond crystal

    In the present work, elastic backscattering channeling spectra, EBS/C, of protons in a (100) diamond crystal were experimentally and theoretically studied via a new computer simulation code. Proton incident energies for EBS/C spectra were in the energy range from 1.0 MeV to 1.9 MeV. The energy range was chosen in order to explore a distinct strong resonance of the C-12(p,p(0))C-12 elastic scattering at 1737 key. The computer simulation code applied for the fitting of the experimental spectra in the random mode was compared with the corresponding SIMNRA results. In the channeling mode, it assumes a Gompertz type sigmoidal dechanneling function, which has two fitting parameters, x(c), and k, the dechanneling range and rate, respectively. It also uses a, ratio of the channeling to random energy losses, as a fitting parameter. It was observed that x(c) increases, k decreases and a stays relatively constant with the proton incident energy. These observations confirm the physical interpretation of the fitting parameters. Also, they constitute the basics for the further development of the code for the quantification of induced amorphization and depth profiling of implanted ions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
