The disparity between narrative and moralising epimythion in Middle High German verse narratives (often referred to as MĂŠren = tales) has frequently been the subject of research. This article shows that frictions between narratio and moralisatio in these texts are not only an area of investigation for narrative researchers but contain equally significant philological, codicological and traditional historical components which should be considered when or before embarking on an interpretation. In four rounds, using various short verse narratives from the late Middle Ages as well as the Eulenspiegel aporia, the relationship between narrative and interpretation is revealed, including their actual inseparability

An Atomistic View of Platinum Cluster Growth on Pristine and Defective Graphene Supports

    Get PDF
Density functional theory (DFT) is used to systematically investigate the electronic structure of platinum clusters grown on different graphene substrates. Platinum clusters with 1 to 10 atoms and graphene vacancy defect supports with 0 to 5 missing C atoms are investigated. Calculations show that Pt clusters bind more strongly as the vacancy size increases. For a given defect size, increasing the cluster size leads to more endothermic energy of formation, suggesting a templating effect that limits cluster growth. The opposite trend is observed for defect-free graphene where the formation energy becomes more exothermic with increasing cluster size. Calculations show that oxidation of the defect weakens binding of the Pt cluster, hence it is suggested that oxygen-free graphene supports are critical for successful attachment of Pt to carbon-based substrates. However, once the combined material is formed, oxygen adsorption is more favorable on the cluster than on the support, indicating resistance to oxidative support degradation. Finally, while highly-symmetric defects are found to encourage formation of symmetric Pt clusters, calculations also reveal that cluster stability in this size range mostly depends on the number of and ratio between Pt—C, P—Pt, and Pt—O bonds; the actual cluster geometry seems secondary

Discussion of stern-first-method in ship handling for ship operation, education & training using fast time simulation

Some port approaches require challenging manoeuvring strategies for arrival and departure, specifically under heavy wind and current conditions. In recent papers a discussion of the “Stern-First-Method” SFM was started suggesting that it would be beneficial to go astern into the harbour instead of the conventional bow first method. In this paper the SAMMON software for “Simulation Augmented Manoeuvring Design, Monitoring & Conning” will be used to analyse this SFM for challenging scenarios to provide insights into the potential benefits of this methods. This software is based on the innovative “Rapid Advanced Prediction & Interface Technology” (RAPIT) to simulate the ships motion with complex dynamic math models and to display the ships’ future track immediately based on Fast Time Simulation in an Electronic Navigational Chart for any rudder, thruster or engine manoeuvre planned by the navigator. The SAMMON system has been developed and matured over years, and promising experiences were made at the Maritime Simulation Centre Warnemuende MSCW and other centres. Currently, specifically the use of the SAMMON Manoeuvring Planning tool will be an element of the transfer of knowledge within the current ERASMUS+ project EURO-ZA between the partners from Europe South Africa. The benefits for increasing the effectiveness of lecturing and simulator training have been proven in previous publications and will be made visible in this paper by using simulator ships both twin screw and azimuth propulsion for discussion of the SFM manoeuvring strategies.Peer Reviewe

An amino acid transporter involved in gastric acid secretion

Gastric acid secretion is regulated by a variety of stimuli, in particular histamine and acetyl choline. In addition, dietary factors such as the acute intake of a protein-rich diet and the subsequent increase in serum amino acids can stimulate gastric acid secretion only through partially characterized pathways. Recently, we described in mouse stomach parietal cells the expression of the system L heteromeric amino acid transporter comprised of the LAT2-4F2hc dimer. Here we address the potential role of the system L amino acid transporter in gastric acid secretion by parietal cells in freshly isolated rat gastric glands. RT-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry confirmed the expression of 4F2-LAT2 amino acid transporters in rat parietal cells. In addition, mRNA was detected for the B0AT1, ASCT2, and ATB(0+) amino acid transporters. Intracellular pH measurements in parietal cells showed histamine-induced and omeprazole-sensitive H+-extrusion which was enhanced by about 50% in the presence of glutamine or cysteine (1mM), two substrates of system L amino acid transporters. BCH, a non-metabolizable substrate and a competitive inhibitor of system L amino acid transport, abolished the stimulation of acid secretion by glutamine or cysteine suggesting that this stimulation required the uptake of amino acids by system L. In the absence of histamine glutamine also stimulated H+-extrusion, whereas glutamate did not. Also, phenylalanine was effective in stimulating H+/K+-ATPase activity. Glutamine did not increase intracellular Ca2+ levels indicating that it did not act via the recently described amino acid modulated Ca2+-sensing receptor. These data suggest a novel role for heterodimeric amino acid transporters and may elucidate a pathway by which protein-rich diets stimulate gastric acid secretio

Since medieval texts are not treated enough in school, lecturers working in school and university presented their projects, ideas and experiences concerning the implementation of German-mediavistic contents in German school lessons during the conference “Heroes in School” in October 2014. The topics concern general reflection about the profitability of medieval literature in school, concrete lesson plans, the implementation in Rudolf Steiner schools, the integration of seminars in university that deal with the work in school etc. All articles demonstrate that the integration of medieval literature in school worth the effort – also in the 21st century

Record, Relate, Remember: Narrative Constructions of Memory and Generation in Antiquity and the Middle Ages

Over the last few years, much attention has been devoted to the crucial functions of recording, relating and remembering in the construction of, and customs associated with, personal and collective identities. The resulting interdisciplinary dialogue has paid much attention to the relationship between text, context and historical and literary discourse. Indeed, the narrative processes which often underpin the construction of generational communities and memories in pre-modern societies represent a key element in current trends of interdisciplinary research, comprising the academic disciplines of History, Literary Studies, Philosophy, Philology, Historical Anthropology and the Social Sciences. The social capacities of generational memory, along with the creative potential of transgenerational narratives in the development of social communities, form a key topic in the burgeoning field of Cultural Memory Studies. From 2-4 March 2011, an international and interdisciplinary conference was organised at the University of Bamberg aimed at bringing together researchers from all career stages to engage in a collaborative dialogue on the narrative construction of generation and memory in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The present volume comprises a selection of papers delivered at that conference. It seeks to provide insight and guidance for future research projects conducted in this field, and thus to encourage scholars to engage with this important topic in their research
