    Using Adult Learning Characteristics and the Humanities to Teach Undergraduate Healthcare Students About Social Determinants of Health

    Authors used an andragogy framework to help undergraduate allied health students better understand social determinants of health (SDOH) using a photo essay assignment. The study examined students’ perceptions of SDOH in various communities, description of health outcomes associated with their chosen SDOH, and lessons learned and suggestions to improve the assignment for future cohorts. Data were extracted from photo essays from 2019–2021 and entered in Microsoft Excel and Word for data analysis after course completion. Conventional qualitative content analysis was used to analyze student evaluation data from open-ended questions. Data were extracted from 53 student essays from 2019 to 2021. Most photo essays described communities in South Carolina (n = 42, 79.2%), urban areas (n = 37, 69.8%), or intermediary SDOH (75.5%). Several themes emerged concerning lessons learned (awareness and empathy are key to addressing SDOH), health equity (collaboration is necessary to provide resources, especially for underserved populations), and constructive feedback for the instructor (more time to discuss SDOH and assignment with peers and instructor). Faculty must work with students to think about more upstream factors like policy and cultural and societal values. Collecting evaluation data, specifically lessons learned and constructive feedback for faculty, can help faculty continuously improve course topics and assignments. Following a transparency framework can support student success and help faculty become effective leaders in the classroom while teaching subjects like SDOH and social justice

    Analysis of the recovery phase after maximal exercise in children with repaired tetralogy of Fallot and the relationship with ventricular function

    Background Few studies demonstrate delayed recovery after exercise in children and adults with heart disease. We assess the recovery patterns of gas exchange parameters and heart rate (HR) in children with repaired Tetralogy of Fallot (rToF) compared to healthy peers and investigate the correlation with ventricular function and QRS duration. Methods 45 children after rToF and 45 controls performed a maximal incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test. In the subsequent recovery period, patterns of VO2, VCO2 and HR were analysed. Half-life time (T-1/2) of the exponential decay and drop per minute (Rec(min)) were compared between groups. In the rToF group, correlations were examined between the recovery parameters and QRS-duration and ventricular function, described by fractional shortening (FS) and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) measured at baseline prior to exercise. Results Recovery of VO2 and VCO2 was delayed in rToF patients, half-life time values were higher compared to controls (T1/2VO2 52.51 11.29 s vs. 44.31 +/- 10.47 s; p = 0.001 and T1/2VCO2 68.28 +/- 13.84 s vs. 59.41 +/- 12.06 s; p = 0.002) and percentage drop from maximal value was slower at each minute of recovery (p<0.05). Correlations were found with FS (T1/2VO2: r = -0.517; p<0.001; Rec(1min)VO(2): r = -0.636, p<0.001; Rec(1min)VCO(2): r = -0.373, p = 0.012) and TAPSE (T1/2VO2: r = -0.505; p<0.001; Rec(1min)VO(2): r = -0.566, p<0.001; T1/2VCO2: r = -0.466; p = 0.001; Rec(1min)VCO(2): r = -0.507, p<0.001), not with QRS-duration. No difference was found in HR recovery between patients and controls. Conclusions Children after rToF show a delayed gas exchange recovery after exercise. This delay correlates to ventricular function, demonstrating its importance in recovery after physical activity

    Social determinants of health (SDOH) refer to the factors that influence one\u27s quality of life and various health outcomes like morbidity, mortality, life expectancy, healthcare expenditures, and much more (Artiga & Hinton, 2018). These factors may also be viewed as predictors of various health outcomes and include factors like access to healthcare, education, socio-economic status, and physical conditions such as living environments (Baverstock et al., 2018). Healthcare leaders are recognizing the growing significance of SDOH impact on health and health equity. Educators in medicine are using classroom space to teach about SDOH and their effect (Doobay-Persaud et al., 2019; Klein et al., 2011; Martinez et al., 2015; Sharma et al., 2018; Witten & Maskarinec, 2015); however, not much is seen in the literature for allied healthcare professionals (Brown et al., 2021). Authors employed several lenses to teach SDOH to allied healthcare professionals who are also students in an online Bachelor of Science Healthcare Studies program at a large academic medical center in the southeastern United States: (1) characteristics of adult learning, (2) aspects of a transparency framework, and (3) fundamentals of the humanities.https://medica-musc.researchcommons.org/posters/1021/thumbnail.jp
