    Heterotic compactifications and nearly-Kahler manifolds

    We propose that under certain conditions heterotic string compactifications on half-flat and nearly-Kahler manifolds are equivalent. Based on this correspondence we argue that the moduli space of the nearly-Kahler manifolds under discussion consists only of the Kahler deformations moduli space and there is no correspondent for the complex structure deformations.Comment: 5 pages, references added, typos correcte

    Eksperimentell fosfortilsetning til Nedre Lundetjenn i Grimstad kommune gjennom tre pÄfÞlgende vekstsesonger (1999-2001) fÞrte til en dramatisk tilbakegang i forekomsten av krypsiv sammenlignet med en ubehandlet referanseinnsjÞ like oppstrÞms. GjÞdslingsforsÞket ble gjentatt i 2006 og 2007 for Ä undersÞke om en kunne repetere resultatene fra forrige gang. Selv om krypsivbestandene i Nedre Lundetjenn viste en reduksjon bÄde i mengde og vitalitet i 2006-2007, fikk vi ikke samme dramatiske reduksjon som ved fÞrste gjÞdslingsperiode. OgsÄ eksperimentelle gjÞdslingsforsÞk under kontrollerte laboratorieforhold har gitt motstridende resultater. Mangelen pÄ entydige responser av fosfortilsetning i helsjÞ- og laboratorieforsÞk illustrerer derfor at Ärsakene til variasjonene i krypsivets vekst fortsatt framstÄr som sammensatte og kompliserte.     Structure elucidation of sildenafil analogues in herbal products.

    The structure of unknown compounds present in herbal products was elucidated using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, direct-infusion electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance. Compounds 1-3 were identified as sildenafil analogues, 1 bearing an N-ethylpiperazine moiety instead of an N-methylpiperazine, and an acetyl group instead of the sulfonyl group, named acetildenafil, 2 bearing an N-ethylpiperazine moiety instead of an N-methylpiperazine (homosildenafil), and 3 bearing an N-hydroxylethylpiperazine moiety instead of an N-methylpiperazine, named hydroxyhomosildenafil. When analysing products marketed for penile erectile dysfunction or marketed as aphrodisiacs, attention should be given to the possible presence of these components

    A New Fractional D2-brane, G_2 Holonomy and T-duality

    Recently, a new example of a complete non-compact Ricci-flat metric of G_2 holonomy was constructed, which has an asymptotically locally conical structure at infinity with a circular direction whose radius stabilises. In this paper we find a regular harmonic 3-form in this metric, which we then use in order to obtain an explicit solution for a fractional D2-brane configuration. By performing a T-duality transformation on the stabilised circle, we obtain the type IIB description of the fractional brane, which now corresponds to D3-brane with one of its world-volume directions wrapped around the circle.Comment: Latex, 13 page

    Superpotentials from flux compactifications of M-theory

    In flux compactifications of M-theory a superpotential is generated whose explicit form depends on the structure group of the 7-dimensional internal manifold. In this note, we discuss superpotentials for the structure groups: G_2, SU(3) or SU(2). For the G_2 case all internal fluxes have to vanish. For SU(3) structures, the non-zero flux components entering the superpotential describe an effective 1-dimensional model and a Chern-Simons model if there are SU(2) structures.Comment: 10 page

    Lattice Artefacts In The Non-Abelian Debye Screening Mass In One Loop Order

    We compute the electric screening mass in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions at finite temperature and chemical potential to one-loop order, and show that lattice artefacts arising from a finite lattice spacing result in an enhancement of the screening mass as compared to the continuum. We discuss the magnitude of this enhancement as a function of the temperature and chemical potential for lattices with different number of lattice sites in the temporal direction that can be implemented in lattice simulations.     G-Structures, Fluxes and Calibrations in M-Theory

    We study the most general supersymmetric warped M-theory backgrounds with non-trivial G-flux of the type R^{1,2} x M_8 and AdS_3 x M_8. We give a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for preservation of supersymmetry which are phrased in terms of G-structures and their intrinsic torsion. These equations may be interpreted as calibration conditions for a static ``dyonic'' M-brane, that is, an M5-brane with self-dual three-form turned on. When the electric flux is turned off we obtain the supersymmetry conditions and non-linear PDEs describing M5-branes wrapped on associative and special Lagrangian three-cycles in manifolds with G_2 and SU(3) structures, respectively. As an illustration of our formalism, we recover the 1/2-BPS dyonic M-brane, and also construct some new examples.Comment: 40 pages; v2: one reference added, typos correcte

    Effects of alteplase for acute stroke on the distribution of functional outcomes: a pooled analysis of 9 trials

    Background—Thrombolytic therapy with intravenous alteplase within 4.5 hours of ischemic stroke onset increases the overall likelihood of an excellent outcome (no, or nondisabling, symptoms). Any improvement in functional outcome distribution has value, and herein we provide an assessment of the effect of alteplase on the distribution of the functional level by treatment delay, age, and stroke severity. Methods—Prespecified pooled analysis of 6756 patients from 9 randomized trials comparing alteplase versus placebo/open control. Ordinal logistic regression models assessed treatment differences after adjustment for treatment delay, age, stroke severity, and relevant interaction term(s). Results—Treatment with alteplase was beneficial for a delay in treatment extending to 4.5 hours after stroke onset, with a greater benefit with earlier treatment. Neither age nor stroke severity significantly influenced the slope of the relationship between benefit and time to treatment initiation. For the observed case mix of patients treated within 4.5 hours of stroke onset (mean 3 hours and 20 minutes), the net absolute benefit from alteplase (ie, the difference between those who would do better if given alteplase and those who would do worse) was 55 patients per 1000 treated (95% confidence interval, 13–91; P=0.004). Conclusions—Treatment with intravenous alteplase initiated within 4.5 hours of stroke onset increases the chance of achieving an improved level of function for all patients across the age spectrum, including the over 80s and across all severities of stroke studied (top versus bottom fifth means: 22 versus 4); the earlier that treatment is initiated, the greater the benefit

    Cohomogeneity One Manifolds of Spin(7) and G(2) Holonomy

    In this paper, we look for metrics of cohomogeneity one in D=8 and D=7 dimensions with Spin(7) and G_2 holonomy respectively. In D=8, we first consider the case of principal orbits that are S^7, viewed as an S^3 bundle over S^4 with triaxial squashing of the S^3 fibres. This gives a more general system of first-order equations for Spin(7) holonomy than has been solved previously. Using numerical methods, we establish the existence of new non-singular asymptotically locally conical (ALC) Spin(7) metrics on line bundles over \CP^3, with a non-trivial parameter that characterises the homogeneous squashing of CP^3. We then consider the case where the principal orbits are the Aloff-Wallach spaces N(k,\ell)=SU(3)/U(1), where the integers k and \ell characterise the embedding of U(1). We find new ALC and AC metrics of Spin(7) holonomy, as solutions of the first-order equations that we obtained previously in hep-th/0102185. These include certain explicit ALC metrics for all N(k,\ell), and numerical and perturbative results for ALC families with AC limits. We then study D=7 metrics of G2G_2 holonomy, and find new explicit examples, which, however, are singular, where the principal orbits are the flag manifold SU(3)/(U(1)\times U(1)). We also obtain numerical results for new non-singular metrics with principal orbits that are S^3\times S^3.     Aspirin and extended-release dipyridamole versus clopidogrel for recurrent stroke

    Background Recurrent stroke is a frequent, disabling event after ischemic stroke. This study compared the efficacy and safety of two antiplatelet regimens — aspirin plus extendedrelease dipyridamole (ASA–ERDP) versus clopidogrel. Methods In this double-blind, 2-by-2 factorial trial, we randomly assigned patients to receive 25 mg of aspirin plus 200 mg of extended-release dipyridamole twice daily or to receive 75 mg of clopidogrel daily. The primary outcome was first recurrence of stroke. The secondary outcome was a composite of stroke, myocardial infarction, or death from vascular causes. Sequential statistical testing of noninferiority (margin of 1.075), followed by superiority testing, was planned. Results A total of 20,332 patients were followed for a mean of 2.5 years. Recurrent stroke occurred in 916 patients (9.0%) receiving ASA–ERDP and in 898 patients (8.8%) receiving clopidogrel (hazard ratio, 1.01; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.92 to 1.11). The secondary outcome occurred in 1333 patients (13.1%) in each group (hazard ratio for ASA–ERDP, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.92 to 1.07). There were more major hemorrhagic events among ASA–ERDP recipients (419 [4.1%]) than among clopidogrel recipients (365 [3.6%]) (hazard ratio, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.32), including intracranial hemorrhage (hazard ratio, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.11 to 1.83). The net risk of recurrent stroke or major hemorrhagic event was similar in the two groups (1194 ASA–ERDP recipients [11.7%], vs. 1156 clopidogrel recipients [11.4%]; hazard ratio, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.95 to 1.11). Conclusions The trial did not meet the predefined criteria for noninferiority but showed similar rates of recurrent stroke with ASA–ERDP and with clopidogrel. There is no evidence that either of the two treatments was superior to the other in the prevention of recurrent stroke. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00153062.
