    Hierarchical Dobinski-type relations via substitution and the moment problem

    We consider the transformation properties of integer sequences arising from the normal ordering of exponentiated boson ([a,a*]=1) monomials of the form exp(x (a*)^r a), r=1,2,..., under the composition of their exponential generating functions (egf). They turn out to be of Sheffer-type. We demonstrate that two key properties of these sequences remain preserved under substitutional composition: (a)the property of being the solution of the Stieltjes moment problem; and (b) the representation of these sequences through infinite series (Dobinski-type relations). We present a number of examples of such composition satisfying properties (a) and (b). We obtain new Dobinski-type formulas and solve the associated moment problem for several hierarchically defined combinatorial families of sequences.Comment: 14 pages, 31 reference

    Wound-healing evaluation of ointment from Stryphnodendron adstringens (barbatimão) in rat skin

    This study evaluated the cicatrizant effect of an ointment containing 1% of the ethyl-acetate fraction extracted from the stem bark of "barbatimão" (Stryphnodendron adstringens), in wounds made in the skin of rats, after 4, 7 and 10 days of treatment. Control wounds were treated with a base ointment without extract. The proliferation of keratinocytes in the area of reepithelialization was evaluated by counting the number of epithelial cells that were blocked in metaphase by vincristine sulfate. The length of the reepithelialized margin and the contraction of the wound were measured. Topical application of the "barbatimão" ointment stimulated proliferation of the keratinocytes, but had no effect on the length of the epithelium or on the contraction of the wounds.Neste estudo, avaliou-se a atividade cicatrizante de uma pomada contendo uma fração acetato de etila 1% obtida de cascas de "barbatimão" (Stryphnodendron adstringens) em feridas excisionais na pele de ratos após 4, 7 e 10 dias de tratamento. Feridas controle foram tratadas com pomada base, sem extrato. A proliferação dos queratinócitos na área reepitelizada foi avaliada através da contagem do número de queratinócitos bloqueados em metáfase, pelo sulfato de vincristina. O comprimento da margem reepitelizada e a contração das feridas foram mensurados. As feridas tratadas com barbatimão apresentaram um maior número de mitoses do que aquelas tratadas com a pomada base, em todos os tempos avaliados. A aplicação tópica da pomada de "barbatimão" estimulou a proliferação epitelial contudo não teve efeito sobre a migração dos queratinócitos ou sobre a contração das feridas

    Anti-inflammatory and Anti-nociceptive Effects of \u3cem\u3eSphaeranthus senegalensis\u3c/em\u3e

    Sphaeranthus senegalensis Vaill (Asteraceae) is used in traditional medicine as a remedy for rheumatic pains and other ailments. The anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activity of the aqueous extract of the whole shoot of the plant was evaluated in mice and rats. Activity of the extract against egg-albumin induced hind paw oedema was measured to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity while the anti-nociceptive potency was evaluated using three painful stimuli viz acetic acid induced abdominal constriction and hot plate test in mice, and the formalin test in rats. Results indicated that the extract possess remarkable dose dependent anti-inflammatory activities in rats. The extract also showed anti-nociceptive activities against acetic acid induced writhing, formalin and the hot plate pain models. The effects were significant (P\u3c0.05) when compared with the saline control group. The results suggest the presence of a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive principle in the extract, which support the folkloric use of the plant in relieving rheumatic pains

    Effects of 3, 5 - dimethoxy - 4 - hydroxybenzoic acid and 2, 3, 4 - trihydroxyacetophenone were studied on haemoglobin S (Hb S) polymerisation, analgesia and inflammation using Hb S solution, rats and mice. UV spectrophotometric procedure was used to monitor the polymerization of the Hb S. Acetic acid induced writhing in mice and egg albumin induced rat paw edema procedures were used to evaluate analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of the compounds respectively. The results indicate that both drugs inhibit the process of polymerization significantly, possibly by direct action on the Hb S molecules. The drugs inhibited acetic acid induced pain and decreased egg albumin induced oedema. It is concluded that 3, 5 - dimethoxy - 4 - hydroxybenzoic acid and 2, 3, 4 - trihydroxyacetophenone may have some value in the management of sickle cell disease

    Pharmacological Effects of the Aqueous Extract of \u3cem\u3eNeorautanenia mitis\u3c/em\u3e in Rodents

    The pharmacological effects of the aqueous extract of Neorautanenia mitis (family Papilonaceae) were studied in rodents. Investigations were carried out on acetic acid-induced writhing (pain) in mice and hind paw oedema in rats. The effects of the extract were also studied on the isolated non-pregnant rat uterus and rabbit jejunum. Results showed the extract to possess significant (P\u3c0.05) dose-dependent anti-nociceptive activity between 12.5 and 50.0 mg/kg p.o. in mice and slight anti-inflammatory activity at 25 and 50 mg/kg p.o. in rats. The extract also produced a concentration-dependent inhibition of the normal rhythmic contraction of the isolated non-pregnant rat uterus. It was found to inhibit oxytocin-induced as well as acetylcholine-induced contractions in the rat uterus. The extract also exhibited concentration-dependent inhibition of spontaneous contractions of the rabbit jejunum. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed the presence of saponin glycosides, flavonoids, tannins and alkaloids. The extract had an intraperitoneal (i.p.) LD50 of 282.84±3.2 mg/kg in mice. These data corroborate the traditional use of this plant in the treatment of dysmenorrhea

    Formulation and In-vitro Evaluation of Ciprofloxacin HCl Floating Matrix Tablets

    Oral drug delivery is the most widely utilized route of administration among all the routes that have been explored for systemic delivery of drugs via pharmaceutical products of different dosage form. Oral route is considered most natural, uncomplicated, convenient and safe due to its ease of administration, patient acceptance and cost-effective manufacturing process. Gastroretentive drug delivery system was developed in pharmacy field and drug retention for a prolonged time has been achieved. The goal of this study was to formulate and in-vitro evaluate Ciprofloxacin HCl controlled release matrix floating tablets. Ciprofloxacin HCl floating matrix tablets were prepared by wet granulation method using two polymers such as HPMC K100M (hydrophilic polymer) and HPMC K15M. All the Evaluation parameters were within the acceptable limits. FTIR spectral analysis showed that there was no interaction between the drug and polymers. In-vitro dissolution study was carried out using USP dissolution test apparatus (paddle type) at 50 rpm. The test was carried out at 37 ± 0.5 0C in 900ml of the 0.1 N HCl buffer as the medium for eight hours. HPMC K100M shows a prolonged release when compared to HPMC K15M. These findings indicated that HPMC K100M can be used to develop novel gastroretentive controlled release drug delivery systems with the double advantage of controlled drug release at GIT pH. On comparing the major criteria in evaluation such as preformulation and in vitro drug release characteristics, the formulation F8 was selected as the best formulation, as it showed the drug content as 99±0.4% and swelling index ratio was 107.14, and in-vitro drug released 61.31±0.65% up to 8 hours. Results indicated that controlled Ciprofloxacin HCl release was directly proportional to the concentration of HPMC K100M and the release of drug followed non-Fickian diffusion. Based on all the above evaluation parameters it was concluded that the formulation batch F8 was found to be best formulation among the formulations F1 to F8 were prepared

    Co(thd)(2): a superior catalyst for aerobic epoxidation and hydroperoxysilylation of unactivated alkenes: application to the synthesis of spiro-1,2,4-trioxanes

    Bis(2,2;6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)cobalt(II) (Co(thd)(2)), a beta-diketonate prepared in a simple one-step procedure, is an excellent catalyst for aerobic epoxidation and Mukaiyama-Isayama hydroperoxysilylation of unactivated alkenes. For hydroperoxysilylation, Co(thd)(2) is superior to Co(acac)(2) and can catalyse oxidation of cyclic alkenes in excellent yield. Chiral beta-diketonate or keto iminato catalysts failed to catalyse this reaction in an enantioselective manner and a free radical mechanism consistent with this observation is proposed. Hydroperoxysilylation of cyclohex-1-enylmethanol by Co(thd)(2) followed by addition of a ketone/TsOH provides a simple one-pot procedure for the synthesis of spiro-1,2,4-trioxane antimalarials.
