    Identification of Collagen IV Associated Proteins in Drsophila Using Genetics and Mass Spectrometry

    Metastatic cancer cells invade and spread to other locations by disrupting the basement membrane (BM). The membrane plays a major role during the normal development of an organism as well. In order to understand the invasion mechanism it is important to know about the interactions occurring between the proteins of the BM during normal development. This study concentrates on isolating and identifying the major factors associated with collagen IV, a major component of BM, during the third instar larval development of Drosophila. Western blot and mass spectrometry analysis revealed that collagen IV associates with various growth factors, signaling molecules, and proteins that may play a role during the development of Drosophila. Co-localization and knockdown studies performed on a single protein found through mass spectrometry suggested a possible role of this protein in the development of Drosophila. Further analysis of this proteins’ function will provide new insights into its developmental role and its potential role in collagen IV transport

    The rapid response of ovarian and uterine veins of mice to sex hormones.

    Subcutaneous injections in sesame oil of testosterone and estradiol-17 beta into ovariectomized and ovariectomized-hysterectomized young adult mice were followed in six hours or less by significant increases in the diameters of the ovarian and uterine veins as compared to the same vessels in sesame oil-injected controls. The circumflex iliac, femoral, and superior mesenteric veins and inferior vena cava failed to respond. The results demonstrate the specificity and speed of response of ovarian and uterine veins of mice and the control of the response by sex hormones

    News and narratives in financial systems: Exploiting big data for systemic risk assessment

    This paper applies algorithmic analysis to financial market text-based data to assess how narratives and sentiment might drive financial system developments. We find changes in emotional content in narratives are highly correlated across data sources and show the formation (and subsequent collapse) of exuberance prior to the global financial crisis. Our metrics also have predictive power for other commonly used indicators of sentiment and appear to influence economic variables. A novel machine learning application also points towards increasing consensus around the strongly positive narrative prior to the crisis. Together, our metrics might help to warn about impending financial system distress

    The hidden figure: sexual intimate partner violence among Pakistani women

    Background: The objectives of the present study were to determine the magnitude and factors associated with sexual intimate partner violence (SIPV) in women presenting to tertiary-care hospitals of Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: Five hundred women who presented to four tertiary-care hospitals to deliver were interviewed from September to December 2005. SIPV was assessed by using questions on sexual abuse in WHO Domestic Violence Module designed to determine intimate partner violence. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to determine factors associated with SIPV. Results: Twenty-one percent of women reported experiencing sexual violence in their married life. Gravida with five or more pregnancies [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12-6.96], index pregnancy as unwanted (AOR = 2.64, CI 1.16-6.02) and conflict with in-laws (AOR 1.9 CI 1.14-3.16) were independently associated with sexual abuse. Women who had social support were less likely to be abused by their intimate partners (AOR 0.76, CI 0.58-0.98). Conclusion: One in five women reported spousal sexual abuse in their married life. Women having more than five children, unwanted pregnancies or reporting differences with in-laws are more likely to be subjected to such abuse. Social support protects women from sexual abuse by intimate partner

    Plants have traditionally served as man\u27s most important weapon against pathogens. Herbal medicines are widely used by all sections of the community, either as folk remedies or as medicaments in the indigenous as well as modern system of medicine. The present work was performed to enumerate the medicinal herbs that tribes and rural people uses for the treatment of jaundice. Data were collected by interviewing local traditional therapists and tribes of the region. Details of 10 herbs and 03 formulations were gathered along with their doses, duration and formulations during the course of present investigation in the study area. Our study revealed that all above herbs and their formulations have been used since quite a long time by the tribes and rural people and no side/ adverse effects were reported

    Background: Thrombocytopenia defined as platelet count of less than 1,50,000/cu.mm. Thrombocytopenia is divided according to severity into mild moderate and severe types. Multiple factors are responsible.Methods: This is a retrospective study of one-year period including 120 pregnant patients irrespective of their gestational age at civil hospital Ahmedabad. Etiology of this condition are identified and analyzed.Results: Gestational Thrombocytopenia is the most common etiology. This condition is self-limiting usually.Conclusions: Platelet count estimation should be a routine at first antenatal visit for timely diagnosis and to achieve favorable fetomaternal outcome.

    Constraints on compact dark matter from gravitational wave microlensing

    If a significant fraction of dark matter is in the form of compact objects, they will cause microlensing effects in the gravitational wave (GW) signals observable by LIGO and Virgo. From the non-observation of microlensing signatures in the binary black hole events from the first two observing runs and the first half of the third observing run, we constrain the fraction of compact dark matter in the mass range 102105 M10^2-10^5~{M_\odot} to be less than 5080%\simeq 50-80\% (details depend on the assumed source population properties and the Bayesian priors). These modest constraints will be significantly improved in the next few years with the expected detection of thousands of binary black hole events, providing a new avenue to probe the nature of dark matter
