An Action Research at English Department FKIP UNMUL Samarinda
This study aims to gain deep understanding of the improvement of the students ability in speaking English through contextual teaching and learning at the English Language Department of afternoon class at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Mulawarman Samarinda.The speaking skill improvements were measured from the four speaking aspects: fluency, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Method used in this research was action research and conducted in two cycles. The data of the research was the learning proses and the results of improvement in speaking by using the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach. Data analysis is by using qualitative and quantitative method. Qualitative method here means that the researcher used verbal description to explain the data whilst the quantitative method means that the researcher used numbers, percentages, tables and graphics to describe the data. The results indicated that learning English speaking by using the Contextual Teaching and Learning approach could improve the students’ speaking ability, as shown in the improvement of their score at pre-test, the test at the end of cycle 1 and the test at the end of cycle 2 of this research. The data showed the improvement process of students’ speaking skills, as shown from the average score results of pre-test namely 60.21; from cycle 1 was 70.60 and cycle 2 was 76.12. So, it proved that Contextual Teaching and Learning could improve the students’ English speaking skill. Keywords: contextual teaching and learning, improving, speaking skil
An Analysis of Grammatical Errors in Writing Thesis Proposal of English Department Students in Mulawarman University in the Academic Year 2018/2019
The purposes of the study were (1) To find out the types of grammatical error made by English Department students in writing thesis proposal and (2) To know the most dominant grammatical error made by English Department students in writing thesis proposal. The subjects of this study were the eighth semester students of English Department. The researcher used the students’ thesis proposals as the instrument which had a total of 20 thesis proposals. The data was collected through quantitaive-qualitative methods. Therefore, this study used document analysis. The findings showed that the students of English Department made errors in singular-plural noun, word form, subject-verb agreement, verb tense, and verb form in writing thesis proposal. There were 47 errors in singular-plural noun or 12.46%, 3 errors in word form or 0.80%, 238 errors in subject-verb agreement or 63.12%, 58 errors in verb tense or 15.39%, and 31 errors in verb form or 8.23%. Therefore, the most dominant error that the students made was subject-verb agreement (238 errors or 63.12%)
The Instructional Media Criteria In English Learning Videos On The Ruang Guru Youtube Channel
This study focused on three English learning videos on the Ruang Guru Bimbel Online No. 1 YouTube channel. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were three videos from the Ruang Guru Bimbel Online No. 1 YouTube channel which discusses the expression material for junior high school, as well as the responses from viewers in the three videos. This study used a checklist observation sheet and viewers' comments as documents to collect data. Researchers used a checklist of instructional video criteria adapted from Dimas, et al. (2018) to determine the criteria applied by the Ruang Guru Bimbel Online No. 1 YouTube channel. The researcher also used viewers' comments to find out the audience's response to the instructional video. The researcher found that the videos from the Ruang Guru Bimbel Online No.1 YouTube channel is a useful video and the content already contains a learning model that is in accordance with the 2013 curriculum, and also there is no gender discrimination in the videos which are in accordance with the first criterion, namely content. then there is a motivating introduction, detailed information to be understood, suggested methods that can be used by teachers, can be used as teacher reflections, activities that can encourage active learning, and the audio-visual quality is quite clear which is in accordance with the second and third criteria, namely instructional plans, and technical production. On the fourth criterion, which is included supplement materials, the researcher did not find any supplemental materials from the videos. Then most of the responses found from viewers lead to positive responses to the Integration into the Learning Environment on the Instructional Plan criteria, where viewers think these videos can be used as independent learning or in class. As for the negative response aimed at audio quality in the Technical Production criteria, the viewers felt that the teacher was still lacking in the pronunciation aspect
Students’ Anxiety in Speaking English of The 10th Grade at SMA Negeri 16 Samarinda
Anxiety in speaking English is one of the affective factors that can influence language learning negatively. This study focused on exploring students’ anxiety of the 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 16 Samarinda, for investigating the speaking anxiety of the types, causes, and students’ strategies to overcome their anxiety in speaking English. This study utilized a case study, qualitative research design. The research subjects of this study were four students who categorized as high and moderate anxiety. The data were obtained from classroom observation and interviews. The data were transcribed and triangulated by using data triangulation. The result of the study revealed that one male student was categorized as high speaking anxiety experienced with trait anxiety. While the other male students was categorized as moderate speaking anxiety experienced with state anxiety. The two female students also experienced with state anxiety. The cause of these anxiety that experienced by student who has a type of trait anxiety was because of not accustomed to speaking or interacting with other people in the form of oral communication both in English and Indonesian. While the causes of anxiety experienced by students who has a type of state anxiety was due to fear of negative reaction like being laughed at and feeling nervous and shyness because they are not confidence when speaking English in front of the class. The lack of knowledge and vocabulary mastery, and dislike of English lesson possessed also caused anxiety in speaking in English experienced by four participants. To overcome the causes of speaking anxiety, the students use preparation, avoided eye contact, expresive reactions, and positive thinking as their strategies
Investigating The Implementation Of Flipped- Differentiated Learning In The Context Of Efl Learners
This study examines the implementation of flipped-differentiated learning in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Flipped learning is an instructional approach that reverses the traditional classroom model, where students engage with content outside of class and participate in interactive activities during class time. Differentiated learning, on the other hand, focuses on tailoring instruction to meet individual students' needs and learning styles. This integration of flipped and differentiated learning has the potential to enhance EFL instruction by providing personalized learning experiences and promoting active engagement among students. The objective of this research is to investigate how the two English teachers of a certain Senior High School In Samarinda conduct the integration, the opportunities, and the challenges they discover during the implementation of flipped-differentiated learning in EFL classrooms. The study employs a qualitative case study and the data is collected through open-ended questionnaire and depth interview, analyzed thematically to gain insights into teacher's experiences of this instructional approach. The findings of this study shows the process, the opportunities, and challenges of implementing this integration and hope to inform future research on integration that promote active learning and personalized instruction in language classrooms with the complete data and extent context

DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING MATERIALS ON 7 OBJECTS OF THINGS, ANIMALS AND PLANTS AROUND ME WITH SUB-THEME 3 OF LIVING THINGS AT CLASS 1 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS BASED ON SCIENTIFIC
This study aims to find out whether there are differences in learning outcomes of grade 1 elementary school students who use learning supplement books developed in the sub-theme 1 Living Objects Around me with learning outcomes of students who do not use learning supplement books developed in the sub-themes of 1 Living Objects Around Me. use research and development methods. The research and development procedure used is a modification of the Borg and Gall development model which includes seven steps of development namely stage (1) research and information gathering; (2) planning; (3) development of preliminary product forms; (4) preliminary trials; (5) revisions to the main products; (6) the main trial based on the results of the preliminary trial; (7) revision of operational products; (8) trial. operational; (9) final product revisions; and (10) dissemination and implementation. until it becomes the final product of teaching materials that refers to the 2013 curriculum. Theme 7 Objects, Animals and Plants Around Me subtema 1 Living Objects for class 1 Elementary School. Development of teaching materials using instruments that are interviews, observations, discussions with experts, competency tests, questionnaires, likert scales that are made in the form of a checklist such as questionnaires for expert validation. The technical data analysis used in this study is qualitative and quantitative data. The results of this study are teaching materials that refer to the 2013 curriculum sub-theme 1 Living Objects for grade 1 elementary school. Before and after the supplement book can be seen from the difference in the average pre-test and post-test that is 68.6 and 87.8 Feasibility Evaluation of Thematic Learning by using Rubrics with 3 material expert Validator Tests of 96%, madia expert Validator Test 89% of education expert Validator tests were 93.3%. Evaluation of supplementary book learning with a small group trial of 89.5%, and a large group test of 93.7%
THE LISTENING COMPREHENSION DIFFICULTIES OF THE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY
The purposes of this study were to know the difficulties faced by the fourth semester students in Advanced Listening Comprehension Course at English Department, and to know strategies used by the fourth semester students in overcoming the difficulties in Advanced Listening Comprehension Course at English Department. The design of this study was descriptive with qualitative approach. The population was the fourth semester students at English Department in Mulawarman University that consisted of 63 active students of fourth semester students at English Department in Mulawarman University. Data was gathered by questionnaire and interview. The findings of this study showed that, the students had difficulties in listening comprehension and strategies to overcome it. It was based on three factors influencing their listening: listening materials, listener factors, and physical settings. In addition, the major problems encountered by students of English Department were: accents, pronunciation, speed of speech, insufficient vocabulary, different accent of the speakers, lack of concentration, and bad quality of recording. Furthermore, the strategies that the students implemented was using media as the learning tool. It can be concluded from this study that there were ten problems in students’ self learning that were found in analyzing students’ difficulties, they were : lack of vocabulary, poor grammar mastery, accent, pronunciation, lack of concentration, speed of speech, anxiety, noisy, inability to apply listening strategy, bad quality of recording
A Corpus-Based Analysis of Word ‘Ghost’ in the Collection of Kenyah Stories
To illustrate the concept of ghosts, this research aimed to explain how they were described in Òma Lóngh and Lebu’ Kulit language, the collection of Dayak Kenyah short stories. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method based on figurative language personification theory. Data analysis is conducted using corpus analysis with the AntConc application. This research concluded that there are four categories that employ personification in relation to the term 'ghost' namely the ghosts act like human, the ghosts being described as dying like humans, ghosts can transform into other forms and ghosts being described as animals. The use of personification in these stories allows readers to relate to and believe in the ghost, enhancing the drama and suspense of the story. The ghosts in this research were only described using personification. Further research might investigate ghosts through different theories to see how their appearance can contribute to certain meanings in the stories
