    Numerical Simulations of a High-Resolution RANS-FVDM Scheme for the Design of a Gas Turbine Centrifugal Compressor

    The aero-thermodynamic design and performance of a compressor need to conquer many vital challenges like it is a gas-driven turbo-machinery component, involvement of extensive iterative process for the convergence of the design, enormous design complexity due to three-dimensional flow phenomena, and multiflow physics embedded within a dynamic state-of-the-art. In this chapter, a strong attempt is made to address the above-cited technical issues to achieve an optimized design and performance of a centrifugal compressor with backward swept blade profile producing total pressure ratio of 5.4 with an ingested mass flow rate of 5.73 kg/s. A mean-line design methodology was implemented to configure sizing of the compressor. An optimum grid size was well validated by carrying out computational analysis with three different mesh sizes within the same framework. Finally, a detailed three-dimensional numerical simulation was performed using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations based on finite volume discretization method (RANS-FVDM) scheme. Consequently, the polytropic efficiency, total-to-total efficiency, stagnation pressure ratio at a fixed rotational speed, and the overall design and aero-thermodynamic performance of the centrifugal compressor are validated

    Influence of age of rooted cutting, nitrogen and stage of harvest on growth, yield and quality of patchouli [Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.]

    Field experiments were conducted to study the influence of age of rooted cuttings at the time of planting (30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 days), N levels (0, 50 and 100 kg ha-1) and stage of harvest (once in 4, 5 and 6 months) on yield and oil quality of patchouli [Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.] under semi-arid tropical climate. The results indicated that planting 30 day old rooted cuttings produced higher plant height, plant canopy and oil yield compared with other treatments. Similarly, application of 100 kg N ha-1 and stage of harvest after six months of planting produced maximum herbage yield, oil yield and oil content compared to other treatments. The highest net return (Rs. 59,550 ha-1) and B:C ratio (1.168) were recorded with the application of 100 kg N ha-1 and stage of harvest once in six months. Oil quality was not influenced by age of the rooted cuttings and N level. &nbsp

    Study of Genetic Parameters in F5 Families of Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

    One hundred and fourteen F5 families of rice belonging to six crosses along with seven parents were evaluated during kharif, 2015 at Andhra Pradesh Rice Research Institute and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Maruteru to study variability, heritability, genetic advance as per cent of mean and nature and direction of association among themselves and with grain yield. Data was recorded on ten characters which showed significant differences among themselves. High PCV and GCV were observed for grain yield per plant and test weight. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for number of grains per panicle, grain yield per plant and test weight indicating the presence of additive gene action in governing the inheritance of these traits. Hence, direct phenotypic selection is useful with respect to these traits

    The demographic studies on Sitana ponticeriana show that the species is abundant in Gabbur village. The lizards exhibited a diurnal variation in their activity pattern (basking, foraging, seeking refuge, etc.). They were active in the morning hours when air temperature was ≤ 33° C and census yielded maximum numbers (45 ± 2.19 in 18,748 sq m or ~ 1.9 ha area). The study provides a pilot index as well as a reliable and accurate methodology for population survey of the lizard. The pilot index is essential for any large scale monitoring project and population trend analysis in future

    Neuronal expression in Drosophila of an evolutionarily conserved metallophosphodiesterase reveals pleiotropic roles in longevity and odorant response

    Evolutionarily conserved genes often play critical roles in organismal physiology. Here, we describe multiple roles of a previously uncharacterized Class III metallophosphodiesterase in Drosophila, an ortholog of the MPPED1 and MPPED2 proteins expressed in the mammalian brain. dMpped, the product of CG16717, hydrolyzed phosphodiester substrates including cAMP and cGMP in a metal-dependent manner. dMpped is expressed during development and in the adult fly. RNA-seq analysis of dMppedKO flies revealed misregulation of innate immune pathways. dMppedKO flies showed a reduced lifespan, which could be restored in Dredd hypomorphs, indicating that excessive production of antimicrobial peptides contributed to reduced longevity. Elevated levels of cAMP and cGMP in the brain of dMppedKO flies was restored on neuronal expression of dMpped, with a concomitant reduction in levels of antimicrobial peptides and restoration of normal life span. We observed that dMpped is expressed in the antennal lobe in the fly brain. dMppedKO flies showed defective specific attractant perception and desiccation sensitivity, correlated with the overexpression of Obp28 and Obp59 in knock-out flies. Importantly, neuronal expression of mammalian MPPED2 restored lifespan in dMppedKO flies. This is the first description of the pleiotropic roles of an evolutionarily conserved metallophosphodiesterase that may moonlight in diverse signaling pathways in an organism

    Effect of potential bioinoculants and organic manures on root-rot and wilt, growth, yield and quality of organically grown Coleus forskohlii in a semiarid tropical region of Bangalore (India)

    Based on earlier results obtained in pot experiments, 2-year field experiments were conducted with five bioinoculants and neem cake under organic field conditions (with vermicompost as a nutritional supplement) to evaluate their potential to control root-rot and wilt (a complex problem involving Fusarium chlamydosporum and Ralstonia solanacearum) of the medicinal plant Coleus forskohlii. Plants treated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Glomus fasciculatum), neem cake or Pseudomonas fluorescens showed significantly increased plant height (15-31%), plant spread (25-33%), number of branches (63-67%) and dry root (129-200%) yields, and reduced disease incidence (47-50%) compared to controls. Increases in yields were reflected by increases in N (51-81%), P (17-76%) and K (44-74%) uptake. The forskolin content of the roots was found not to be affected by any of the bioinoculants, but forskolin yield (calculated) was increased significantly by treatment with G. fasciculatum (227%), neem cake (222%) or P. fluorescens (159%)
