Budva represents one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. It was governed by various nations; the largest number of material traces was left by Illyrians, Romans, and Greeks. The interest for the heritage of the above mentioned civilizations has never been particularly noteworthy – the statues from the period were discovered by accident in the middle of the previous century, the artifacts have never been thoroughly explored, the majority of objects was either destroyed or stolen due to careless and unprofessional excavations or even donated to museums in Belgrade, Split, Zagreb, and Cetinje. Nowadays, Budva treasures only a small part of its history, which still does not attract the attention of the local people due to the fact the objects lack an adequate presentation. The most important treasury from this period is an antique necropolis situated near the city walls of the Old Town. The necropolis contained various lavishly decorated jewelry, tools, and weapons from the Hellenistic and the Roman periods. Today, we can see numerous antique mosaics and the foundations of the Old Town walls, the so called “Budva Acropolis”, which is the present day citadel. The preserved artifacts are kept in the City Museum of Budva. However, they are not worthily represented – the local people do not possess enough knowledge about the antique period of their history

It is the aim of this paper to emphasize the importance of pro- tecting Budva’s ancient legacy, with an overview of the most important ancient sites and monuments, its intangible cultural heritage, as well as previous praxes of research and prevention of Budva’s ancient patrimony. Ancient Budva isn’t merely a testimony about the distant past of the town, but also a reminder of the heterogeneous culture which existed in the area. The archaeological arte- facts found in Budva (the ancient necropolis, fragments of city gates, Budva’s acropolis, villas, basilica, and mosaics) are memorials of diverse traditions which coexisted in the area and created new and specific modes of living. As one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast, Ancient Budva was governed by various ethnicities. The largest number of material traces were left by the Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans. The monuments and sites from the period were discovered by accident in the previous century, and the artefacts have never been thoroughly explored, as the majority of objects was either destroyed or stolen due to careless and unprofessional excavations, or donated to museums in Belgrade, Split, Zagreb, and Cetinje (lavishly decorated jewellery, tools, glass and pottery from the Hellenistic and Roman periods). These artefacts correspond to the excellent artistic production of the time. Knowledge about the wealthy trade centre on the coast – which was positioned near main trade roads and, therefore, at a centre of communication on the Eastern Adriatic coast – would profoundly improve our understanding of Budva’s past. How- ever, to become part of the contemporary collective identity of Budva, this past has to be thoroughly explored, presented, and validated. Ancient Budva is still present in modern Budva. It welcomes the visitors of the Old Town, guest of Avala Hotel, and travellers who walk through Budva’s surrounding area. It calls for examination and research. Nevertheless, if we disregard this heritage, Ancient Budva’s past will be forgotten once more

The garden of the Sorkočević Villa in Rijeka Dubrovačka will be studied as an entity in which morphological and phenomenological components are inseparable – in relation to the culture of Dubrovnik villas and the Italian Renaissance and Baroque concepts, considered in the context of the longue durée. The research goal is to examine the value of the garden in the social and private life of the villa, its representational value as well as the performance in the context of locus amoenus – one of the crucial elements of the concept of Arcadia. Accordingly, the garden will be considered as the active constructor and carrier of ideas of its time, reflected in literature, philosophy, and art

In her contribution ‘The Articles on French Exhibitions and Yugoslav Artists in Paris Written by Bogomir Aćimović Dalma and published in the Nedeljne Ilustracije’ Katarina Jović analyses the criticism of painter, sculptor, and poet Bogomir Aćimović Dalma who belonged to the already mentioned Association of Yugoslav Artists, Painters and Sculptors in France, and contributed to the contemporary art as an artist, philanthropist, and art critic. Dalma’s articles on art present information and critical reviews about the most important events for Yugoslav artists who exhibited in Paris at the time. As the only correspondent for the Nedeljne ilustracije who lived abroad, Dalma in 1931 and 1932 provided prompt information about artistic events in France. In Dalma’s writings, the art world was observed through art, artists, critics, public, and the market. His criticism was descriptive as well as synthetic, occasionally written in the appealing poetic language. The paper deals with aesthetic features and conceptual values of wall-painting in the salon of Brajković-Martinović palace. This is the only originally preserved salon from Perast, created in the second half of the 19th century. As such, the salon is observed as the precious component of the cultural heritage of Perast and Boka Kotorska, owing to its monumental values and documentative potentials. The goal of the research is to examine the iconographic characteristics of wall painting from this salon - form, style and its symbolic significations. Additionaly, examination leads to the interpretation of its representative value, which demonstrates the evocative potentials of private-space-decoration and culture of living. Accordingly, author considers the wall-painting regarding the historical cultural circumstances of the local community and the contemporaneous European cultural milieu. Wall decoration from Brajković’s salon is considered in the context of traditional and modern compound, with local and external influences

The paper explores the potentialities of musical and visual experience in bourgeois salons of the fin de siècle. In response to the evolving musical experience within private spaces, where instrumental performances were believed to elicit individual contemplation, music salons of the late 19th century were organised in line with the principles of an aesthetic experience that unified auditory and visual perception. The case study in this paper is the salon of the Brajković family in Perast, Bay of Kotor, one of the rare music salons from the late 19th century that has preserved its original decor to the present day. The paper examines the visual manifestation of music in this space, its iconographic features and representative value, drawing upon insights and approaches from art history, as well as the history of music, philosophy, and cultural anthropology. The objective has been to analyse the meaning, role, and value of music salons as distinctive aesthetic and conceptual spaces present in the Bay of Kotor at the close of the 19th century

Industry of ethanol production produces by-products that may be used as feed for domestic animals. These by-products are rich in protein, energy and phosphorus. The study was conducted to investigate the effect of by-products in the diets of broilers age of 3 weeks. Chickens were divided into three groups fed with 0.15 and 25% of DDGS (distiller grains with soluble) mixture. What was monitored is daily gain, feed intake and health of broilers from the second week until the end of the fattening period. Also at slaughter was monitored yield, pH, and color chest. Research has shown that adding DDGS does not adversely affect growth, increase conversion, and positively influence the spectrum of chest color. The price of growth was the lowest in the group fed with 25% DDGS. If properly used, by-products can represent a partial replacement for corn and soy in the diet

    L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria: A case report

Introduction. L-2-Hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA) is an autosomal recessive neurometabolic disease with a slowly progressive course and characterized by increased levels of hydroxyglutaric acid in urine, cerebrospinal fluid and plasma. In this condition clinical features mainly consist of mental deterioration, ataxia and motor deficits. Case Outline. The patient is a 16-year-old girl, the first and only child of healthy, non-consanguineous parents of Serbian origin. At the age of 4 years her walk became unsteady and ataxic. Other signs of cerebellar involvement were soon observed. Head circumference was above two standard deviations (55 cm). Mild mental retardation was revealed by formal intelligence testing (IQ 60). MR examination of the brain showed confluent subcortical white matter lesions spread centripetally, and atrophy of the cerebellar vermis with involvement of dentate nuclei, without deep white matter abnormalities. Laboratory investigation revealed increased amounts and a very large peak of HGA in urine and plasma. Enantiomeric analysis confirmed the L-configuration (>90%) establishing the diagnosis of L-2-HGA. The first epileptic seizure, partial with secondary generalization, occurred at age of 8 years. Favorable seizure control was achieved. A slow progression of neurological impairment was noted. Therapeutic trials with oral coenzyme Q10 and with oral riboflavin showed no biochemical and clinical effects. Recently, the diagnosis was proven by the presence of a mutation in the L-2-HGA gene. Conclusion. To our knowledge, this is the first report of L-2-HGA in Serbia. L-2-HGA must be considered in the differential diagnosis based on specific findings in cranial MRI

Williams syndrome is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, and the present study aimed to gain insights into the life experiences of affected children and the support available to them. This qualitative study is the first to explore the experiences of mothers of children with Williams syndrome in Croatia, which is home to 11 such children based on unofficial data. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews showed that mothers experienced in increase in emotional connection and intimacy among family members after the birth of the affected child, and that they received support from their husbands, other family members and other parents of affected children. At the same time, the mothers reported difficulties such as adjusting and harmonizing life roles, social isolation, lack of understanding from other people and daily care for the child. These findings may encourage and guide future research on improving the quality of life of children and adults suffering from rare diseases

Morphological variation of the Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara Jacquin, 1787) in the Central Balkans

The variation in some of the morphometric, meristic and qualitative characters of the Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara) in five population samples from mountains of the Central Balkans was analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistics. The morphological differentiation was greater in males than in females and is more expressed in the morphometric than in the pholidosis and qualitative characters. The largest differences in morphometric traits appeared between the populations from the Šara and Stara Planina mountains. The 'median' pileus pattern generally prevailed, with the appearance of other states in a certain proportion in some of the populations. Further analyses of the possible morphological and ecological distinctions of the population from Mt Tara are proposed.U ovom radu analizirana je morfološka varijabilnost populacija planinskog guštera (Zootoca vivipara) iz centralnog dela Balkanskog poluostrva u pogledu većeg broja morfometrijskih, merističkih i kvalitativnih karaktera pomoću univarijantih i multivarijantnih statističkih metoda. Projekat ministarstva br. 143052: Patterns of amphibian and reptile diversity on the Balkan Peninsul
