An Open Framework for Integrating Widely Distributed Hypermedia Resources
The success of the WWW has served as an illustration of how hypermedia functionality can enhance access to large amounts of distributed information. However, the WWW and many other distributed hypermedia systems offer very simple forms of hypermedia functionality which are not easily applied to existing applications and data formats, and cannot easily incorporate alternative functions which would aid hypermedia navigation to and from existing documents that have not been developed with hypermedia access in mind. This paper describes the extension to a distributed environment of the open hypermedia functionality of the Microcosm system, which is designed to support the provision of hypermedia access to a wide range of source material and application, and to offer straightforward extension of the system to incorporate new forms of information access
Unifying Distributed Processing and Open Hypertext through a Heterogeneous Communication Model
A successful distributed open hypermedia system can be characterised by a scaleable architecture which is inherently distributed. While the architects of distributed hypermedia systems have addressed the issues of providing and retrieving distributed resources, they have often neglected to design systems with the inherent capability to exploit the distributed processing of this information. Non-Linear Constraints with Application to Self-Potential Source Inversion
We investigate the use of non-linear constraints for geophysical inverse problems, with specific examples applied to source inversion of self-potential data. Typical regularization methods often produce smooth solutions by introducing a quadratic term in the objective function that minimizes the L2 norm of a low-order differential operator applied to the model. In some cases, however, the properties of interest may not vary smoothly. Two alternative constraints are examined that provide inversion stability while allowing for solutions with non-smooth properties. One method, often referred to as âcompactnessâ or âminimum supportâ, seeks to minimize the area (in 2D) or volume (in 3D) occupied by non-zero model parameters. The second method, âtotal variationâ, minimizes an approximation of the L1 norm of the gradient of the model. Both approaches involve a non-linear regularization functional, and must therefore be solved iteratively. We discuss the practical aspects of implementing these regularization methods and compare several examples using self-potential source inversion on a synthetic model. First insights into the movements and vertical habitat use of blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) in the eastern North Atlantic
The blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) is a vulnerable migratory fish inhabiting tropical and subtropical pelagic waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The biology and spatial ecology of the species in the eastern North Atlantic is poorly understood, despite being exploited in the region by recreational and commercial fisheries. The evolution of embryonic creek systems in a recently inundated large open coast managed realignment site
Managed realignment (MR) schemes are being implemented to compensate for the degradation of coastal habitats. However, evidence suggests that MR sites have lower biodiversity than anticipated, which has been linked to poor drainage. Despite creek networks playing an important role in enhancing site drainage in natural intertidal environments, there remains a shortage of data on the formation and evolution of creeks within MR sites. This study evaluates creek development at the Medmerry Managed Realignment Site, UK. Creek development is investigated using differential global positioning system(dGPS) data, supported by sedimentological analyses and a high-resolution digital surface model (DSM) derived from images taken using a small unmanned aerial vehicle. Measurements indicated that creeks will develop relatively quickly, but are influenced by differences in the sub-surface sedimentological conditions. A suitable level of agreement was found between the DSM and dGPS measurements, demonstrating the appropriateness of this method to study creek development within intertidal environments at a higher resolution than traditional surveying techniques. These results are used to propose the collapseof sub-surface piping as the primary creek formation mechanism. Findings are discussed in terms of increasing the success of MR schemes and enhancing site design to maximise the ecosystem services provided
Testing Diagnostics of Nuclear Activity and Star Formation in Galaxies at z>1
We present some of the first science data with the new Keck/MOSFIRE
instrument to test the effectiveness of different AGN/SF diagnostics at z~1.5.
MOSFIRE spectra were obtained in three H-band multi-slit masks in the GOODS-S
field, resulting in two hour exposures of 36 emission-line galaxies. We compare
X-ray data with the traditional emission-line ratio diagnostics and the
alternative mass-excitation and color-excitation diagrams, combining new
MOSFIRE infrared data with previous HST/WFC3 infrared spectra (from the 3D-HST
survey) and multiwavelength photometry. We demonstrate that a high [OIII]/Hb
ratio is insufficient as an AGN indicator at z>1. For the four X-ray detected
galaxies, the classic diagnostics ([OIII]/Hb vs. [NII]/Ha and [SII]/Ha) remain
consistent with X-ray AGN/SF classification. The X-ray data also suggest that
"composite" galaxies (with intermediate AGN/SF classification) host bona-fide
AGNs. Nearly 2/3 of the z~1.5 emission-line galaxies have nuclear activity
detected by either X-rays or the classic diagnostics. Compared to the X-ray and
line ratio classifications, the mass-excitation method remains effective at
z>1, but we show that the color-excitation method requires a new calibration to
successfully identify AGNs at these redshifts.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted to ApJ Letter

in a comprehensive and quantitative manner, the impact of womenâs fund and
foundation donors on womenâs and girlsâ causes. Previous research has shed light on
womenâs funds and foundations, on giving to women and girls, and on the impact of
high-net-worth donors. This report addresses the intersection of these three factors
to ask: What unique role do high-net-worth donors to womenâs funds and foundations
play in catalyzing support for womenâs and girlsâ causes
